Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Seems easy enough to get at, but i haven't actually changed the oil yet.
Leading evidence: 'Replace oil yet' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'bit early' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check guage' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I'd like to know how to do it as well, hvdcman - but it's probably a bit early to tell.

I would drain, add all but the last two quarts and wait overnight and check the guage before adding more.

I feel like an idiot because I've always done my own oil changes (first time on a Porsche) and I want to make sure I've got the right one.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have not been able to get under the car yet to look it over, but am curious about doing own oil changes on the car. Not having any experience doing them on a Porsche, is it as easy to do as I find on my Tundra, etc.??? Is there anything special about doing them on a dry sump system?? Is the filter readily accessible??
I’ve been sweating this to. The car is to low to slide under and there is only one jacking point at each corner. How are we supposed to get the car up on 2 or 4 stands if the jack occupies the only point where we can place a stand. Ramps are the alternative but since they can lift only one end we have to hope that the drain plug is at the extreme front or rear of the engine in order for all the oil to drain out. Maybe Boxters have the same engine drain configuration and an answer can be found on a Boxter forum.
I used to do this with my G-35C because it was pretty low: Jack upa corner (rear corner in this case) enough to reach the plug and filter. Remove the drain plug and filter with a drain pan under of course. Then lower the car so it drainsfully from a level position (drain pan must be of thelow profile kind). Once it's drained, jack car up again to install the plug back and replace the filter. Lower the car and fill with oil. As far as safety, I would suggest you strategically put something under the car in the remote case the jack fails.

I also like the way they painted that truck green and just painted right over the license plate. No policeman is going to be able to read that license now!
I don't know. After 10,000 miles, I've seen 911 oil filters laugh at all those funny oilfilter wrenches ... Perhaps having the filter outside near the airstream, it doesn't get as hot???
The only issue I have with a DIY oil change is making sure not to overfill. With no way to measure one must trust the electronic display. I would drain, add all but the last two quarts and wait overnight and check the guage before adding more. A sneak up on it approach for lack of a better strategy. Then there is the oil oil disposal question.
A second issue for some is If your Cayman is your only car do you want to be hauling around used oil in a container in the cargo space?
Santa Fe - I’m with ya Santa Fe, but I actually think DIY’s can do a better drain, warm oil and no stop watch running. Also don’t forget to use the SF cocks.

Hi All!
Sorry to bring back an old thread but in the pic (of the Cayman underside) above I see the oil filter but not sure where the plug is. I feel like an idiot because I've always done my own oil changes (first time on a Porsche) and I want to make sure I've got the right one.
Thanks for any help!
Directly to the left of the oil filter is a big metal enclosure. At the center of the enclosure you will see a small circle next to a large one. That small circle is the drain plug. You will need an 8mm hex wrench to remove it. There is a good article on this website for how to change your oil. The hardest part for me was getting the filter off. Especially if its coated in grease. You will need one of the tools in this thread or a oil filter wrench with a swivel handle to get enough leverage. Also make sure you have a crush washer and a oil filter o-ring to put back on. I know there was some concern over getting the right amount of oil into the car written previously. In my experience putting exactly 8.2qts in will get you right on the money.
Thanks flatt6! I appreciate the help. The vehicle's I've had in the past always had a bolt at one of the edges of the oil pan. (of course I've always had an engine in front too
) I guess I've got to start thinking differently with the Cayman.
Thanks again!
