Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

For this repair, he tells me that since it is a 4S tiptronic, the engine and gearbox must be lowered and he does not feel qualified for this.

Do you know if the differential can be repaired or is it an exchange part and what price the repair may cost?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My 996 4s makes noise in the rear axle when taking sharp curves or roundabouts, it is a constant noise while in support, groggggg as if it rubbed iron against iron

POST 2Original post

Maybe a bad wheel bearing. If it is and it fully fails u will break the axle shaft. Jack up car, spin wheels and see if u can find the noise. With the wheel in the air there should be zero play if u grab at 9 and 3 oclock position and try to wiggle the wheel.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

On the 16th I have an appointment at the workshop, in addition to the wheel bearing and CV joint of the axle shafts, other parts that rotate and can produce that noise, could it be the differential? The car is C4 tiptronic. There is no noise on straight lines and in smooth driving, only in strong support in very tight corners.

POST 5Original post

Yea it could be a dozen other things like limited slip, front diff, bad sway bar link or toe bar, blown shock. When suspension and drivetrain parts fail they can present as issues in other components. I would not drive till diagnosed and take it easy on the way over to the indy.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I think the 996 4s tiptronic does not have a self-locking mechanism.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The car is already in an independent workshop, the mechanic suspected that the noise was coming from the rear differential, the first thing he did was drain the oil from the differential and the magnetic plug was with a handful of metal residue and the oil came out with a density Very high, similar to a paint can and metallic gray color, an unequivocal sign of wear on some internal part. For this repair, he tells me that since it is a 4S tiptronic, the engine and gearbox must be lowered and he does not feel qualified for this. operation, so I will have to take it to C. O. Porsche. Do you know if the differential can be repaired or is it an exchange part and what price the repair may cost? Thank you
