I suspect I am in the minority with my view, but after over 5000Km I used the radio/cd 4 or 5 times - I find that I enjoy the engine sound so much in this car, that I feel no need to switch the radio on.

the trick in the car environment is to spectrum analyzed the frequency response inside the vehicle and adjust the frequency response to be as flatas possible.

I believe that the Bose system in the Cayman is probably the best measurable system for that space for that money.

When I was planning to add extra gauges to my BMW I was doing some research, and I recall coming across an article that strongly recommended not using those clamp on connectors - I don't recall what their issue was with it.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

i really need to add some decent music to the cayman. there are asmall number of high end subs out in the market that are 2 inch in depth and need onlysmall cubic volume. i am planning on adding a custom fiberglass enclosure (reduce weight) hidden under the passenger footwell if there is nothing important underneath. this is the best location, imo, to maintain the front/rear balance of the cayman as well as the right/left (steering and driver weight on left, small sub and small amp on right).<o

i hate to see subwoofers enclosures in a car trunk so if there is no room than no sub...<o

as for the rest of the Bose system, i will keep the Bose head unit (HU) and integrated with Audio Control's L6i preamp. the L6i takes high level outputs from the Bose HU (fronts, rears and sub) and sums the signal into 3 line level (RCA) signals (front, rear, and sub). the summing process will take out the equalization curves Bose added to compensate for the cheap speakers on the dash, doors rears and sub. from the L6i the signal will to Alpine

i will be replacing the oem speakers with JMlab/Focal BE drivers (already bought them, so too late now but to move forward). this will improve frequency response and focus. from Kman-S' article where he takes most of the trim off and shows the stock rear Bose speaker...man, what a bunch of crap. Porsche should be taking to task for charging us so much for the Bose option and giving us trash...<o

all this...to get better sound while minimizing weight (as much as possible) and stock appearance.<o

mt647,
Excellent choices. I like your solution. I think the L6i is the right way to go. Please let me know how well it works. I used an xTant amp and Dynaudio speaker solution with great results in my old NSX. Focals = /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/thumbsup.gif
I assume you'll be tapping the AC L6i into this....
mt647,
Look at the articles section for the baby seat install, the installation of the cut-off switch required removal of the passenger side dash so you can see what it behind it there.

lace></st1:city><span> sad story...but that's what happens when you replace the head unit. there are just too much integration with the dash, ECU and the rest of the carto rip and replace...<o

that is why you leave the head unit and use the high level outputs from the Bose amp. all the 'intelligent' signals are not touched...just the signals that would normally drive the speakers will be used...think of it like your home stereo...you don't open up the receiver to add a new component, you either use a RCA or high-level speaker outputto add a subwoofer or othercomponents.<o

that is the only way to do aftermarketin this day and age...and besides, i like the stock look.<o

- good question...that is why the L6i works best with high-level input from ALL of the outputs from the Bose (front, rear, and subs). like all preamps, home or auto, the signal gain is increased and equalized for a specific sound the aftermarket manufacture is try to portray. believe it or not, each aftermarket manufacture has a different and unique sound. the L6i is known in the market place as a very 'neutral' sounding component with minimalfrequency curves.<o

the trick in the car environment is to spectrum analyzed the frequency response inside the vehicle and adjust the frequency response to be as flatas possible. Then, once flat is achieved, you adjust to personal taste. ifone listens to alot of jazz and acoustic music like myself, i leave the frequency response curve flat with a slight(very slight) increase inhighs. <o

i know this seems like alot of trouble for sound, but audio is one of my other passions. like speed, audio accuracy is nirvana…[/quote]

Did ya ever notice how some environments produce an echo, whereas some others don't?
I know very little about stereos; but I do have the book about the Cayman. And they talk about sound engineering and show this room and lots of data collection, with cool pictures and lots and lots of cables ... it seems really technical, really expensive, really thorough ...
I find it really hard to believe that we can go buy a few 'marketed' products, cut a couple wires, and get a blend of bad to make it better ...
Maybe this ought to be called the 'Hey, Jude' mod.
I believe that the Bose system in the Cayman is probably the best measurable system for that space for that money. Beyond that , I'm spending any extra $$ on fuel, because driving this car is way better than listening to any music, coming out of any speakers, produced by any 'Hey, Jude' mod (IMHO).
It might be me, but I find a good sound system in a car a cross purpose, and even more in a sports car. I suspect I am in the minority with my view, but after over 5000Km I used the radio/cd 4 or 5 times - I find that I enjoy the engine sound so much in this car, that I feel no need to switch the radio on. I feel more connected with the car with the radio off, and can pick up any changes in the sound it makes, possibly helping with an early diagnose of a future problem.
Given the small volume of the Cayman, ie. the short distance between the listener and the speakers is it even possible to create good imaging. After all isn't that the primary function of a good sound system - reproduce the original recording session recorded in a studio or on a live stage ?
Please don't take my comments as negative in anyway as to your plans - I am sure you will have a great setup, and I am sure it will make driving the Cayman that much more fun for you /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/thumbsup.gif

i hear you loud and clear and appreciate the advice...i'll see how the L6i sounds and if a is DSP processor is need then one will be added.
as for the cut wire harness...i dont know why a reputable installer would 'cut' a wire harness. there are clips available that snaps on to existing wires by peircing the insulation and clamp on a protective insulatorsfor these kind of jobs...i would say the shop in Tucson did a verypoor job, no matter how nice they were.

- no worries, you opinion is valued...i reliazed long ago that to learn is to listen...but at the end of the day...this is a hobby...and the quest for ne plus ultrais unending. or at least till you die...
KaiserSozay:
You are correct, the BOSE adds a lot of equalization at the head unit. The AC L6i will only sum up the various high/mid/low signals split up by the internal crossover. It does not have a DSP to correct the over-equalized response from the HU.
mt647:
You may want to look at the JL Audio CleanSweep CL441DSP which has a built in 30 band equilizer with built in auto-analyzer. You will need the CL SSI summing module before feeding the DSP module. I'm not a big fan of A-D to D-A conversions but you may have to live with this evil to correct the one from BOSE!

When I was planning to add extra gauges to my BMW I was doing some research, and I recall coming across an article that strongly recommended not using those clamp on connectors - I don't recall what their issue was with it. Mind you since you would tap the speaker wires, the worst that can happen is that a speaker will stop working - in my case it was an oil sensor and consequences would have been more severe /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/whatchutalkingabout_smile.gif Good luck with the project.
I used to drive around as a younger driver with the stereo cranking and blow untold amounts of money on Alpine (the best at the time) systems. 4 or 5 of them! Older now and not hearing quite as well, I am very pleased with the basic Cayman stereo. 9 or 10 speakers (I think) that play the music that I like. If mobile audio is your thing, check out the Levinson system in the LS430. It is an environment that is sealed from external noise and has plenty of space. Your fighting an uphill battle trying to counteract the engines' low frequency sound waves that are constantly changing in modulation as you accellerate. What you need is a system that can change equalization as well as volume based on the amount of noise from the engine. I don't think such a piece of equipment exists (please correct me if I'm wrong). You will never be happy with the sound until you can solve this complex issue. Good luck fellas! In the mean time enjoy the ride.......
Here's an interesting set of products those of you who want to keep the factory head units may want to look at. I saw a demo of them (a friend of mine works for JL) and they do some pretty amazing stuff like remap factoryEQ curves and accepting just about any type of input. They're pretty slick.
