I want to replace my stock 18' wheels with 19' Carrera Sport Wheels. My car has TPMS. What happens if the new wheels are not TPMS compatible other than obviously the TPMS will not work. Are there any 'hidden' problems that anyone knows about?
I'm thinking you will get a lot of annoying error messages saying that TPMS is not active. I'd try to get 19' wheels with TPMS senders/
That's exactly what will happen: TPMS malfunction warning that can't be turned off.
Thx for the input. I'll make sure to buy new wheels with TPMS but will likely wait until my existing tires need replacing. I'm at 5000 miles now so I figure about this time next year I'll need new rubber.
If you're going to REPLACE your 18's with 19's, the TPMS sending unit and valve stem may be moved to the new rims. They will work with any standand Porsche rim. If you'r going to use BOTH sets, like I do for street and track, you can purchase a set of 4 senders and valve stems to install on the new rims. The best price I found BY FAR was from Wheel Enhancement, who sold me a set of 4 each for about $500. From Porsche, they run >$750 for a set of 4, and the ones from Wheel Enhancement were genuine Porsche parts, complete in the stock packaging with the stock numbers and serial numbers. Then, each time you swap to the other set, direct the onboard computer in the Tach to the TPMS setting, select SET, then tell it tire type (Summer for all but snow tires) and rim diameter. The system then goes into learning mode, requiring you to drive 2-5 miles for the car to learn which transmitter is at which corner of the car -- (think about it: each receiver will receive radio signals from each of the 4 wheels -- to decide which is which, it looks for 1 signal at each corner with an exagerated sinusoidal changing signal strength compared to the other 3 to tell it which is coming from it's wheel well, as the other 3 transmitters will always be approximately the same distance (a constant 4 to 8 feet)and hence signal strength from any receiver. The transmitter from the same well will vary from about 6 inches to 18 inches from the receiver as the tire rotates.) Anyway, you could concieveably buy non TPMS rims on eBay, then add senders or move your current ones. Greg
gemars, thanks for the info. Finally, someone has a solution. I'll be getting rid of the stock 18" wheels (next spring) and if I understand you correctly, I can have the stems and sensors moved to the new 19" wheels. Yes, I'll be getting Porsche Carrera Sports or Sport Designs. Thanks again.
I have the Carrera Sport wheels on my CS that i am trying to sell right now. Let me know if you are interested
