I've installed 997 seats but my left hand still hits my when turning and that's starting to prevent me from pressing on and enjoying the car.

I will probably take some heat on this, but I am always amazed to see people who have installed steering wheels without airbags.

To me this is like removing the seal belts or disconnecting the ABS system.

I do like the stock OE 3 spoke steering wheel (I have a CPZ thicker option version that I bought new from Porsche some 17 years ago) but the Momo Cup wheel drastically changes the feel of the car and the steering response, and for me, that outweighs the larger diameter stock OE airbag wheel.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm loving the C4S but the lack of space with the steering wheel is starting to bug me. I've installed 997 seats but my left hand still hits my when turning and that's starting to prevent me from pressing on and enjoying the car. My car had PCM at some point, now a double DIN unit. If like thoughts on replacing that with a single DIN unit, moving the AC controls up and the doing a console delete, keeping the factory steering wheel. Or replacing the wheel with a smaller diameter one (T96 to keep the airbag or Momo for a classic look), keeping the console and the double DIN. The extra space for my legs with the delete would be nice but not a must have but what I really need is that space under the wheel to feel I can safely control the car when driving fast or on track. Thoughts and contributions most welcome.
Early on I did console delete in my 99 c2 and it gave a much more open cockpit feel. I was constantly banging my knee and calf against that huge CD-case thing which was both pointless and way too large. I kept single DIN so no relo necessary of the HVAC controls and I'm not a huge fan of how that looks anyway but if its your only option then I'd do it (I really hated the front console).
personally I'd probably avoid making the wheel much smaller if it were me, mainly because it already blocks the outer gauges but to be fair I had the ugly 4-spoke but had it wrapped with thicker rim and thumb grips and it felt good while still looking kinda 'meh'. Is the 3-spoke smaller in diameter? Its definitely better looking.
Highly recommend a steering wheel spacer. No matter what I did, I could never find the right seating position. Turns out, the steering wheel just doesn't come out enough. I've used one of these for about two years and would never go back. Fairly inexpensive and easy to do!

Go with a console delete and and Momo Cup/Mod 07 steering wheel. The benefits of the smaller diameter wheel which is closer to you, far outweigh any lack of visibility with regards to the gauges.
There are also offset adaptors that enable you to lower or raise the position of the steering wheel relative to the gauges.

If you want to keep the airbag (in Germany it is very difficult to drive legally without an airbag), you can convert to a 340mm ATIWE steering wheel. These are available for retrofitting from various tuners (Ruf, Gemballa). Alternatively, you can also install the 320mm steering wheel, but I think this is too small for the 996.
+1 on the steering wheel spacer. I could never get a good seating position without my hands hitting my legs when using the steering wheel. I bought and installed a steering wheel spacer and it makes all the difference in the world! I also retained the airbag. The only downside is that the stalks are a bit far from the steering wheel, so I do have to remove my hand from the steering wheel to use turn signals.
My issue with my 996 C4 is the limited space between the steering wheel and my legs . I put my seat all the way back to make entrance/exit easier then adjust the seat for driving . And I am only 5 ' 10 " . I am considering replacing the steering wheel but don't necessarily want to go smaller diameter . I want to go with a flat bottom wheel . To me that seems to be the best solution for my issue .
The stock wheel I believe is 372mm diameter . I am thinking that a 360mm flat bottom wheel will provide the extra legroom I want AND still provide good sight line to the gauges . Anything smaller in diameter starts to impede the gauge viewing . Smaller diameter wheels increase the driving experience per online discussions . Thicker wheel padding increases the driving experience . It's all about what trade offs are you willing to make . There is no single right answer .
Thank you so much for this info. SOmehow in all my preperations to change the steering wheel I haven't seen this offset spacer. I just ordered mine and am very excited to regain my gauge visibility.
So true, added to which we're all different shapes and sizes, just because someone is 6 ft tall doesn't mean they're share the same torso to leg ratio as another individual who is 6 ft tall.
I could NOT get comfortable in the OE 996 Sports, irrespective of where I moved the seat to, up, down, backwards, forwards, raked, not raked, none of them worked, and they were ruining my enjoyment of the car. Hence I embarked on an expensive (and time consuming) voyage of discovery to find the right seat, that suited me perfectly

The gauges being partially obscured is "collateral damage" that I'm prepared to tolerate for the sake of the benefits the Cup wheel confers. But I totally understand plenty of others wouldn't tolerate such an issue.
I think I saw the option for the leather covered versions
and decided that the huge premium
being asked, wasn't worthwhile paying over the "base" plastic version IIRC Joel.
Yep, they were cents compared with the leather covered versions !!
I figured no one would be sitting in the back of the car, so there wasn't much point in going over the top style wise. Ultimately I just wanted the holes blocked off once I'd removed the seat belts.
I will probably take some heat on this, but I am always amazed to see people who have installed steering wheels without airbags. To me this is like removing the seal belts or disconnecting the ABS system. These are basic safety systems that save thousands and thousands of lives on literally a daily basis.
My particular car is an odd bird with both the leather package and full carbon. I got mine on Suncoast and even though leather was the only option I wouldve liked knowing there was another option.
Damn right you will...
It's called having choices, so rather than relying on the State/its legislators to tell you what to do, you make those decisions yourself.
What of the individuals that climb Everest every day ? Why should I, you, the State or indeed anyone else tell them what they can and can't do ? Those who decide to climb it are big boys/girls, they' know and understand the risks, and yet they still do it, and they still die doing it.
Base jumping, skiing off Piste, and thousands of other leisure pastimes that are dangerous bring much pleasure to those who partake in them, who are you to question their decisions ? What gives you the right to make a moral judgement on whether what other people do is acceptable ? If the last two questions sound overly aggressive, I apologise, they're not meant to be, they're merely to indicate we don't have the right to judge whether what other people do is "right" or "wrong", "stupid" or "reckless" just because we consider it outside of our own comfort zone.
I didn't own a car with an airbag until 2007 and I still have two cars that don't have one. I would never remove an airbag from a car that came with one but it doesn't bother me in the slightest if someone else does.
Do you replace or test your airbag on schedule? If not, there is a solid chance the original airbag that came with the car doesn't work anymore. They were designed to last the lifetime of the car - roughly 15 years - and every 996 is past that now. I agree that on a road car you SHOULD keep all of the safety systems the factory gave you, but that also means maintaining them which I have literally never heard of anyone doing.
I've also taken heat on Reddit before for putting a Momo Mod.08 in a Mazda3 then solid mounting the original airbag onto the Momo. Do your own due diligence, plan for the worst and hope for the best, what else can you really do in life?
Not that it matters but NTHSA used to conduct crash tests with unbelted occupants during the airbag era. Dont know when that stopped but the idea of safety now isnt the same as 21yrs ago(I have a 2003). I hate to be morbid but if you really think that getting in a type of accident that an airbag would undoubtably save your life in a 996 I have no idea what to tell you.
Momo Mod 07, Console delete, and OEM buckets. I'm 6'3'' 230 and have plenty of space. I even have to move the seat forward a few clicks. I'd did 1200 miles on a road trip last April with this setup. It was great.
