Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

are you changing the oil when the engine is cold or am i reading that wrong?

One trick my good friend taught me was to run the oil level down a bar or two.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Yes, I know this question is not for a 996, but the 987 sub here is abysmal...
This is on a 06 Cayman S with a Flat Six Stage II engine
@Porschetech3
, you know this car well!
In this pic my oil level is one notch down. When I keep it at the top mark, when I start the car it blows blue smoke for about 3 seconds.
If I have it one notch down, doesn't blow smoke at startup at all!
The spec sheet from Flat Six says it takes 10qts to fill it. I'm changing the oil as we speak, car is level and engine cold (69 in my garage). Right now I'm at 8 qts out, been about 45 mins of drain time. And I dumped all the oil from the oil filter into the bucket.
So my question is, should I be running it at the one mark down?
I don't track the car but do autox it once a month. Oh, and I use DT-40.
Hi. Here is my experience for what it's worth. On my 996 I used to blow smoke at the track when the oil level was at max. One trick my good friend taught me was to run the oil level down a bar or two. This helps keep the AOS from becoming overwhelmed and controls the oil level in the heads.
There is your issue. It can't handle full oil. You know the routine, the only aos that can handle full oil or more is the UAOS with a preference for the track version. Especially if you are autoxing it.
Then I would run one bar down as a minimum , two bars down is acceptable . I run in the middle on my 02 Boxster S with a FSI 3.6 stage II plus . Stock AOS and been fine since 2015 .
