I'm especially concerned about the long gaps service intervals, and thus likely oil changes, unless the previous owner changed the oil at home.

Suggestion
For 996s that come from wintery parts, In a sample oi two, my buddy and me, I would get under the car and look at the seam on the muffler that runs front to back at the lowest part of the muffler and check for holes/corrosion.

Suggestion
I wouldn't get wrapped up the cold climate impact and how it potentially relates to cylinder bore scoring or the lack of oil changes reported to CarFax.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am looking into purchasing a 2003 c4s 6-speed that shows very low miles (under 30k). Looks to be in great cosmetic condition and is listed by a dealer with a good reputation for selling clean cars. No service records but the carfax shows that it has been serviced a total of 6 times (first service in 2010 at 18k miles, second in 2018 at 28k miles). No record of IMS/RMS replacements. The car was Massachusetts-kept throughout its life, which raises the issue of potential bore scoring given that I've read this is more common in cold weather-kept cars. I'm especially concerned about the long gaps service intervals, and thus likely oil changes, unless the previous owner changed the oil at home. I will try to get it bore scoped prior to purchase, but can anyone speak to the prevalence of bore scoring in cold weather-kept 996s? Also, how concerned would you be about the gaps in oil changes? I will be bringing the car back to sunny California and will make sure to change oil bi-annually as well as take the other necessary precautions. Thanks!
Sounds like a nice car, but I would say the best course of action is to get a PPI on the car and let the results be the determining factor if this is for you or not. I wouldn't get wrapped up the cold climate impact and how it potentially relates to cylinder bore scoring or the lack of oil changes reported to CarFax. That will open a can of crazy worms here on Rennlist. Remember, Carfax is limited when it comes to service. It's only as good as the people that report to it. The owner(s) could have done their own oil changes AND... the car could have been a "fair weather car" and never seen cold weather use. Get my drift? That's why an inspection that includes scoping the cylinders is important. Good luck!
I drive all my cars in winter my previous daily driver were an 86 944turbo for 3 years and a 88 bmw e30 m3 for 4 years just recently sold after 25 years owned
3 things to ensure limited corrosion intrusion
1. Always chassis wash the car once a week in winter
2. every spring and early winter I spray the chassis with lubricant wd40 or whatever
3. I never drive In freshly salted roads or slush usually wait 2 days after
I’ve owned and driven over 50 cars in NYC for the last 43 years and 2 cars gave big problems
first and worst was my 86 GTV6 and my 72 240Z
How many previous owners? For 996s that come from wintery parts, In a sample oi two, my buddy and me, I would get under the car and look at the seam on the muffler that runs front to back at the lowest part of the muffler and check for holes/corrosion.
