Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I could send the whole thing to a repair shop which I may have to do but I am just concerned that with som much on the dsah working, including the illumination that maybe it is not the dsah but something on the car itself?

Suggestion

Sending to a cluster repair shop when you are technically capable of disassembling the cluster makes no sense imo, swapping out the display is a 2/10 on the difficulty scale with the most difficult part probably being taking off the microphone grille to expose the second dash torx

Unfortunately, I have not been able to finmd anyone who sells the lcd display panel - there are plenty of the older versions available everywhere that solder to the pcb but mine is the pluggin ribbon cable type which shows the odomoter in the middle screen rather than the older clsuetrs that had it in the left screen, a doddle to change but I dont seem to be able to find anyone who sells that display otherwise I would change that first as my next step.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 996 2003 and everything works fine on the instrument cluster except the mileage / information box below the speedo. I rtead that this can be a failure of the illumination bulb behind so I removed the cluster to find no bulbs. I then dism, antled the cluster itself to find that the display on mine has an array of surface mounted orange LEDs behind the module on the PCB - and plugging in they all come on so it is not an illumination problem. Has anyone else had this problem with this version of cluster? It could be the info the cluster as shown in the picture (if so anyone know where you can get these?, the drivers on the full instrument cluster itself although if it was I would have assumed more would have failed on the overall dash, or the information from the ecu to the dash maybe? Any feedback from anyone else seeing a similar issue would be much appreciated. I could send the whole thing to a repair shop which I may have to do but I am just concerned that with som much on the dsah working, including the illumination that maybe it is not the dsah but something on the car itself?

not sure what you mean "illumination bulb behind" or where you read that. The central cluster display which people replace either because of burnt pixels or failure can be found on design911 domestically or AE e.g. here Sending to a cluster repair shop when you are technically capable of disassembling the cluster makes no sense imo, swapping out the display is a 2/10 on the difficulty scale with the most difficult part probably being taking off the microphone grille to expose the second dash torx

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the vote of confidence. Thge bulb I was referring to was that the earlier clusters had a bulb to illuminate the back of the lcd panel, the later versions like mine and the 986 had an led array. Anyone know where I can buy the ribbon cable type lcd?

I see what you mean. Middle display for Porsche 911 996, Boxster 986, Carrera GT and RUF instrument clusters Middle LCD display for Porsche 911 996, Porsche Boxster (986), Carrera GT, Ruf 3400 S, Ruf 3600 S, Ruf RGT, Ruf R Turbo speedometers LCD pixel repair. store.minitools.com Yours is the SEPDISP87 version. Minitools makes the needle motors as well, which many members need on occasion (and procuring new units domestically is impossible) so it's potentially worth trying to put together a group buy to share shipping expenses. Minitools only ships to the UK orders over 120EUR due to Brexit so if you order a screen and get a couple of people that want needle motors they could even pay the shipping among them and everyone would still win.

POST 5Original post

Do the needle motors break? If you pull the needle off you can disengage the worm drive, but it's easily repairable. Unclip cover. Reclip worm drive and your done.

POST 6Original post

Loads of cluster display screens on ebay. Pardon our interruption...

POST 7Original post

they are all for 996.1

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Dovoda is correct, most of those you see advertised are the solder type screens that fit the earlier KM series cluster 996.1 which are very different to other 911 996 and 986 Clusters. The SEPDISP87 display mentioned by Dovoda is the correct display and that seems to be only availabel from minitools, I dont see it anywhere else. An easy way to tell the difference without removing anything is the location of the total -mileage counter. The earlier clkusters had it in the left hand clock display, the later have it in the center clock display.

I have a 2002 996 C2 with a similar problem. The LED display works when first switched on but disappears after a few minutes. Stopping and leaving the ignition off for a while normally restores it but again for only a few minutes. So LEDs, cluster or something else? I’d hate to buy a replacement cluster onlyto find the fault was in a chip somewhere else. Thoughts?

POST 10Original post

The mini tools instructions show this modification that you have to make it seems complicated

POST 11Original post

I think this one is the correct one, the SEPDISP87 not from mini tools though.
