Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi everyone, Wanted to see if anyone has any experience getting an MOT done on a vehicle without back boxes / mufflers fitted and if they know of any friendly MOT garages around Hampshire (Basingstoke) or Reading (or even further afield) which might be able to help. Long story short, my 166,000 mile 996 decided it did not want mufflers anymore and the accordion joint rusted through on both sides of the factory mufflers. As it’s a daily, the quick fix was to add muffler-delete end pipes (I don’t mind the drone too much, pairs well with deftones through the bose sound system) but now I am due an MOT and weary of the fact that 1. emissions tests appear to be getting harder for these cars given the age of their systems and 2. The lack of back boxes. So if anyone has any good leads on garages which might be friendly about the situation I would much appreciate it. Alternatively if anyone has any 996 sports mufflers / back boxes lying around that they would like to shift, I would be happy to take them off your hands. S

POST 2Original post

I’ve got a pair of dansk back boxes for sale, quite loud but oddly not too bad on motorway. Flexis have been rewelded at some point in the past. Happy to post

POST 3Original post

Hi from a fellow Basingstoke member. I've been considering the delete pipes for my 3.4 but hadn't considered potential MOT regs - not aware of many friendly MOT places, but can confirm In and out by Morrisons is tough. You could try fast fit on Moniton as they are usually really helpful and might be able to advise if it would pass ahead of the MOT?

POST 4Original post

Is there a CEL? Assume you still have catalytic converters in there then it can only fail on stupidly loud. What else is there. Silencer boxes don’t change emissions AFAIK.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks all for your help - especially @drunkpanda I went to fast fit in the end, they do exhaust work and muffler deletes so seemed a safe bet and worked out perfectly so appreciate you pointing me in their direction. And yes cats are still installed so emission-wise all is still as it should be. Halford’s said it would be an instant fail for them haha

glad to be of help Do you mind me asking how much they charged and whether they created the muffler delete or installed ones you had bought? What's the sound like now?
