Just flicked through a vid on youtube and you can remove the outer cv from the driveshaft using circlip pliers!

11 mins in, this is a turbo and I must admit I've assumed the C4S uses the same driveshafts!

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Morning all.
had the car up on a ramp this morning for general inspection and found both front CV boots to be split and spewing grease.
I'm not a good enough DIYer for this.
Am assuming just go for Porsche replacements and get it done?
Any thoughts on this - and specifically what kind of labour times are likely to be involved? AI thinks c3 hours per axle, but that seems high.
Only got rears to go by, but 3 hours for the axle, not per corner, would be about right by the time you've got the shafts off the drive flanges and out of the hubs etc. bearing in mind the inner CVs and boots will need to come off the shaft to get the old boot off and new boot on not to mention cleaning out all the old grease before refitting. Might be worth doing the inner boots 'whilst you are in there' as they will likely need new clips anyway and will need new grease and it is no extra work.
GKN or SKF are reputable brands about £20 to £25 each for a kit with clips and grease, Porsche parts are outer 996 349 291 00 and inner 996 349 293 00, boot only at about £65 each for comparison.
I've got this job to do on my Turbo, mine haven't split yet but are on the way. I've bought the cv boots and clips from Porsche which were £167 with a bit of discount.
I'm going to do mine myself, but it's not a hard job for any garage to do and shouldn't cost the earth!
I'm pretty sure you can remove the outer joint from the driveshaft and therefore don't need to touch the inner boots, my inners still look fine.
The Porsche genuine boots say gkn on them so if you can find gkn for cheaper you maybe getting genuine without the Porsche tax!
1.5-2 hrs per side seems to be a common time from reading a couple of other threads, and seeing as it's not a specialist job can't see the need to pay Porsche or even Indy labour rates, a known decent local garage should be fine!
Do you have a link? Parts catalogue image looks very much line an integral joint on the outer end just like the rears and makes no reference to an outer joint parts break down or exploded image, just the shaft with integral outer joint. Inner end comes off with just removing a circlip.
Found this on RennTech which agrees with what I've noted above. And remember the 345 lb ft/460Nm for the hub nut on the outer end of the shaft and fit a fresh nut when reassembling.

OK, Design911 do list an aftermarket outer joint for C4, C4s and Turbo (and refer to a Porsche part number 996 349 038 11 that I can't find another reference to other than this being a complete shaft and outer) so I guess it can be changed in a similar way.

Now I'm wondering if this works on the rear shafts too if there is an aftermarket offering for those outer joints. Would be really useful on 987s as they can corrode through. I'll be able to investigate on my 986 shortly as I'm doing the all the CV boots and the inner CVs in the drive shafts as the boots are starting to crack and CV joint with boots was not a lot more, plus the joints have done 122k miles so 'whilst I'm in there....
Did you get a quote before booking if I may ask? I need to do mine as well, and even if it's doable without removing the driveshaft it still looks like it's not worth the trouble to do at home
