I like the performance of the current installed pads, but Im looking for something that will minimize dust, not squeal, and not impact performance.

Then I changed wheels from 17" Carrera wheels to 18" GT3 wheels.

Suggestion
Brake dust stinks, but this is not a daily driver for me so I just have to keep the car clean after use.

XP8 “Carbotech does not generally recommended XP8™ as a daily driven street pad due to elevated levels of dust and noise, however it is proving popular for the fast road users of high performance vehicles who can compromise in there quest for the braking performance and control they need.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

They perform great with no squeal (oem rotors) but I've noticed no improvement with dust.
The brake pads I currently have installed on my 2003 C2 are causing a tremendous amount of dust. This makes owning 3 piece BBS wheels difficult as theres always a film of brake dust on the lower portions of the car. I like the performance of the current installed pads, but Im looking for something that will minimize dust, not squeal, and not impact performance. I dont track the car or use it for autocross days. Just normal (sometimes spirited) driving. Does anyone have a recommendation for both front and rear pads that wont break the bank?
I asked the same question a year ago and went with Brembo ceramics all around, part #65008N, which I think are pretty popular for street use. They perform great with no squeal (oem rotors) but I've noticed no improvement with dust. Now I'm thinking about ceramic coating my wheels to make them less of a dust magnet and easier to clean. Amazon has some wheel kits starting at $30 and the Gyeon kit is $45 that I might go with. Aside from brake recommendations it would be good to hear any experience with these coatings, if they repel dust or not.
Akebono Euro pad have very little dust. I changed to these during my last pad change. Performance seemed the same. Then I changed wheels from 17" Carrera wheels to 18" GT3 wheels. 7lbs added to each corner. Quite a noticeable change in braking performance. Not bad, but a lot more pedal pressure required. Maybe if I had the GT3 wheels to start with I never would've noticed the difference. Now I'm looking at Pagid SP+ to see if I can get the performance back. And likely back to the dust. Sigh. So, Akebono's have amazingly little dust compared to stock pads.
I second Akebono Euro pads. They were a game changer for me in terms of duct. My rims are anthracite in color and the dust produced is barely visible. They don't have as much bite as OEM but I feel like they are more than adequate for street use. I'll be using separate pads for track.
Textar are OE pads and were specified by the factory for use in the 1999 Mk 1 996 GT3.
They’re an excellent pad, and whilst they work satisfactorily from cold, a bit of heat transforms their efficiency.
I’ve not used Akebono’s, but I have to ask the question, why would you want a pad with less bite than OE ?
As for CarboTech, their website advice for their various pads is so contradictory, I wouldn’t risk purchasing them.
1521 :
The Carbotech 1521™ also known as Bobcat
™
is our high performance street compound.
but then :
“
This compound is NOT recommended for regular fast road or any track use, see below for compounds more suitable for this“
And for the AX6 :
“Drivers use the AX6™ for road use as well even though Carbotech doesn’t recommend street driving with AX6™ due to possible elevated levels of dust and noise.“
And the XP8 :
XP8 “Carbotech does not generally recommended XP8™ as a daily driven street pad due to elevated levels of dust and noise, however it is proving popular for the fast road users of high performance vehicles who can compromise in there quest for the braking performance and control they need.
Another vote for Akebono Euro pads. I started with Textars but changed them to the Akebonos after a couple of weeks because the Textars were crazy dusty. BTW, if someone is looking for a set of virtually new Textars, I'll make you a killer deal.
Akebono pad perform great after being properly bedded.
I find they outperform both Textar and Brembo pads on the street.
I also have a set of Hawk Performance Plus Track & Pagid Yellow pads for the track.
They're both superior to the Akebono once they're warmed up, but dusty and noisy.
My vote would be to get the best braking you can without concern for dust. Your gonna get dust nomatter which pads you use, right?
Isn't there a good ceramic coating someone can recommend that you can spray on your wheels that will make it easy to wash off the dust?
This is how I feel also. I am a huge sucker for brake pad bite. I like pads to practically throw me through the window when I use them. Brake dust stinks, but this is not a daily driver for me so I just have to keep the car clean after use. Ceramic coating the car and the wheels goes a long way. Allows you to spray the car off every so often and keep debris off the surfaces.
I think brake feel is a personal choice. I prefer to choose the right pad for the job and it's not like Akebonos or other pads that have less initial bite won't stop you. The braking characteristic changes, that's all. Think turbo vs NA power band but for brakes
For street, I hate overly grabby brakes - that's me. If I want more stopping power, I press the pedal harder. To me it's more predictable. For track, I'll definitely want a pad with more initial bite.
Ceramic coatings, especially for wheels are often misunderstood. Brake dust will still form on wheels and a simple spray down, even with a power washer, will remove a lot of the the brake dust but it will not leave your wheels clean. You still need to use an appropriate cleaner and a brush. What the ceramic coating will do for you is make the cleaning process significantly easier as the dust won't "bake" into the rim. Cleaning requires very little effort. One of the best products for wheels and tires is P&S Brake Buster. I buy it by a gallon and dilute it. Not only does it clean really well but it includes rust inhibitors.
Pete,
Agreed, brake feel at the end of the day is a game breaker for everyone.
Thanks for the P&S recomendation. What do you recomend for a ceramic wheel coating?
I really like teh CarPro DLUX product (
https://www.obsessedgarage.com/produ...YaAlcCEALw_wcB
) Once I wash my wheels and dry them, I do a quick wipe down with P&S Bead Maker to get rid of any residual water on the rim. Bead Maker is a polymer sealant that I use as a drying aid on paint but it works really well on wheels and helps to maintain the coating. Before you apply the ceramic coating you really need to take time to prep the rim or the coating wont last. Use an iron removed followed by a clay bar at the very least.
See, I like a firm pedal that I have to stand on to get to threshold braking. Soooo different! Whats right is whats right for you.
I use Akebono and feel like they are pretty good, good bite, and low dust.
Thanks to all for your reply’s. I have no issues with performance of the brake pads currently on the car. With that in mind, I’m going to take the initial step to ceramic coat the wheels and see where that takes me. Take from there after a few months.
Nein, love to hear how it goes. Anything to make it easy to clean the wheels is a win. Maybe some of the guys with the detailing knowledge will start a thread on various topics.
Best product I ever used for cleaning wheels:

if you go with Hawk ceramic yellow pads, you will hardly use it. These pads are almost 0 dust.

GC996 - Definitely will report back on how it goes. I ordered the ceramic coating today. It will take a little time (prep/drive time) to get a good feel for how it works.
It’s been about 3 weeks since I’ve applied ceramic coating to 3 of 4 wheels (two layers). I left one untreated to determine if there’s any significant difference in brake dust build up. I’ve put around 200 miles on the car in that 3 week period. Normally there’s a significant film of brake dust on the wheels within a 50 mile distance making them have a dingy (sp?) dark grey/black look. I can confirm that there’s only a slight film of brake dust after 200 miles on the three, but more importantly, a quick spray of the water hose wipes it all away. Prior, the brake dust clung to the wheels requiring more of a mechanical (scrubbing) action taking significant time (based on the wheel type I have). Overall, I’m happy with the results and recommend doing this if you haven’t already. Not sure how long the coating will last.
