I just had new front top mounts fitted on my 996T - going on tomorrow to get a wheel alignment done (Hunter) and all four wheels re-balanced (Hunter Roadforce) - when my mechanic changed the top mounts (he's not a porsche expert), he said he just fitted the topmounts roughly in the middle of their travel on the mount ....

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I just had new front top mounts fitted on my 996T - going on tomorrow to get a wheel alignment done (Hunter) and all four wheels re-balanced (Hunter Roadforce) - when my mechanic changed the top mounts (he's not a porsche expert), he said he just fitted the topmounts roughly in the middle of their travel on the mount .... does anyone have any idea where they should be fitted as per factory as I can't find anything via google!
Just trying to help my wheel alignment guy when he comes to look at and tackle the alignment.
Thanks in advance!
Don’t even bother touching them, that’s the alignment guy’s job. If you want to be helpful, check the air pressure of your tires and correct them to your desired spec.
I have no intention of touching them, more me just arming myself with knowledge before I go!
Tyre pressures all set correctly earlier today
But good advice all the same
When swapping front top mounts it's best to make marks where the original factory alignment is.
That said, there is very little adjustment overall. A lot of people just max out the negative camber available (not much lol) and get the tracking done.
A wheel alignment center with Hunter laser jig will just dial the rop mounts back to factory camber which is close to 0 on these.
Every one was seized (cue much west of Scotland swearing) and all the wheel balancing was pretty ropey so he refitted the tyres as well (was showing me on the road force balancer)
Much better now
I’ve had a catalogue of stuff needing doing for two years (starting with clutch) and this is actually now the car back to being properly daily usable for any sort of journey, so I’m over the moon thanks!
And I can finally get it in the garage as well, which is good as the salt is about to come back out hah
