A new to me project 996.2 3.6 with an engine issue. In summary there is no compression on bank #1. The car did run on 3 cylinders which suggests the IMS is intact. I've now removed the engine and can confirm the inlet camshaft on bank 1 is out of time by about 90 degrees. By some miracle valves have not contacted pistons. Oil drained - Clean, no scary particles. Some very slight glitter in the filter but nothing to suggest a catastrophic failure. Bank 1 Cam cover removed. Chains are intact, correctly tensioned and the tensioner ramps are also intact. Bank 2 inlet and exhaust cams align correctly. So, in summary it appears bank 1 inlet cam shaft has slipped, is this possible? Has anyone heard of this before? Does the variable gear on the end of the shaft fail? Am tempted to reset the cam timing and see what happens. Any thought or what to check next ideas would be much appreciated.

Hi, I have a 987 2.7 with a slipped exhaust cam. I wondered if about poor oil feed on the plain bearings might cause the camshaft to slip due to friction. Did you replace the Variocam vane actuator or just bolt it back up? And did it fix it just realigning the cam? Thanks, Graham

Bank 1 is driven from the ims bearing end, bank 2 from the other end, so don't rule out the ims bearing. Sounds to me like someones been tinkering at the ims bearing end and the cam has jumped a few teeth due to it. Could've possibly changed bank 1 chain tensioner without locking everything up.
