Everybody's different, my car until recently has been to an OPC every two years, however since I bought it in 2010 I've always had them do minor services and then have changed the extra parts for the major myself using genuine parts, the extra parts for the major are spark plugs, air filter, pollen filter normally although 1 also included the drive belt and fuel filter.

So why did I do it myself, well 996ts are not worth that much for some reason and mine has 70k, I've kept it in very good condition so if I did decide to sell I know it would come out of a PPI well, and I will obviously say it's had Porsches recommended servicing done using genuine parts.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all..
Just thought I’d let anyone know who is interested.. My car is a 2002 that has full Porsche service history from new and I feel committed to keeping the second service book as pretty looking as the first one 23 years on..
Porsche Nottingham are doing classic servicing.. Today Ive had a major service with spark plugs and brake fluid change plus airbag & cabriolet roof check.. for £1036 with a loan car.. Not sure what that would cost with a good independent .. But for anyone that wishes to use an OPC it’s an option.. Apparently moving forward they are looking to be more involved with older cars..
Impressive OPC history. I guess its hard to stop after 23 years... Also not sure what that would cost at an independent. Assume £600 ish? Someone will be along with the actual figure. If I did that at home I estimate approx £300 for parts. Not sure how I would check an airbag though...
For a 996 Turbo Major Service + Plugs + Brake fluid change, indys around Vheshire and South West Lancashire will be around £880 - £950 + VAT. That's £1,056 - £1,140 inc. VAT. If they are less - one is doing fixed price of £887 inc VAT + £99 brake fluid change with service inc VAT. Total £986 inc VAT. The oil and other filters are not Porsche supplied but Euro Car Parts. They will fit Porsche parts for oil, air and pollen filter at extra cost.
So you can see, the cheapest indy near me is less than £100 cheaper for a 996 Turbo assuming a lical OPC offers that Nottingham rate for 996 Turbo.
In my estimation, I have always used OPC fixed price classic servicing over an indy.
It's not worth losing the stamp in the book for less than £100.
Always surprises me the number of people who are prepared to pay vastly inflated prices @ OPC for a stamp which says your car has been molested by an apprentice or trainee & you have paid well over the top for it!
However whilst you are under original or extended Porsche warranty I completely understand your options are more limited.
You should ring and email indys within a 50 mile radius. Put them in a spreadsheet listing cost (including VAT) and labour rate per hour (inc VAT). I have regularly done it for Cheshire, Lancashire and West Yorkshire indys. The results will amaze you. Some were dearer than OPC on their fixed price modern classic services price.
Very few were significantly cheaper (less than £150 inc VAT cheaper). Many indys quoted labour rates that didn't match the prices quoted - they were taking shortcuts versus the OPC Service Schedule.
There are OPC who rip folks off as there are indys who do the same.
OPC work us guaranteed 2 years - parts and labour. Indys? One year guarantee - only on parts. You'll still pay the indy for labour to replace defective parts in the warranty period.
Map it objectively. Then decide.
Not all indys and not all OPC are as they want you to appear.
Indy servicing marketing as "main dealer servicing at half main dealer rates" is the biggest ***** story being touted.
What argument ? I didn’t start an argument, I merely stated my point of view.
I will not pay my OPC in the region of £225 + VAT an hour to change the oil, my indie charges £85 + VAT & allows me to supply my own oil & filter. I also know that he works on the car himself not some apprentice or trainee. I would be surprised if your OPC allows you to supply your own oil & filter, because they want to add their ridiculous Porsche tax onto it. Having run my own business successfully for 35+ years there is making a profit & then there is having a giraffe.
You pays your money & takes your choice. Just out of interest there was someone on eBay selling OPC rubber stamps the other week ! I wonder if they were genuine? Are all Porsche OPC stamps in a service book genuine? Who knows!
I think you are slightly missing the point of my original post.. Common sense would suggest if you are looking for the cheapest way to service your car it is to do it yourself rather than OPC or ndependent.. I was just trying to make those interested aware that Classic servicing was available at Stratstones in Nottingham at a price point some may be interested in..
I don't think they are having "a giraffe' as you put it..The overhead to staff and operate these new centres which I believe in the case of Nottingham was a £15 million build doesn't make my service with loan car look vaguely expensive in comparison to the staff numbers and set up of most independent garages.. Regarding trainees doing the work that is supposition on your part and pointless mentioning.. OPC invoices to match the stamps in the service book would be my answer to your eBay comment.. Plus you can always call them and they will confirm if the service was done by them
At the end of the day... Each to their own
Regards
Johnny
Points well made. I use OPC Chester for my minor and major services. They have always assigned a heritage technician who knows 964/993/996/997 cars extremely well. One is now in a Porsche racing team (he did all my services). Last year minor was done by an ex-Sports & Classic technician who did the PPI on my car when at S&C and knows 996 Turbo cars inside out.
I plot service costs into a spreadsheet as I commented earlier. And some indys were dearer than OPC Chester on their fixed price modetn classics rates. The others were marginally cheaper (<£150 inc VAT).
It has never been worth my losing OPC history for such mediocre savings, and carried out fully to Porsche schedules and book times. A prestige cars specialist says the OPC history is coveted and should stand test of quality maintenance. And he sells Ferraris, Maserati and Porsche cars.
As you say, each to their own. I am on my 2nd service book. All the stamps in the first book are OPC bar one during Covid when OPC Chester furloughed the staff and closed.
I do think there is value in those stamps supported by all the invoices from OPC Chester in my 13 years of ownership.
The car was bought in 2012 at 22k miles. It is now on 49k miles. I have a queue of folks who want first refusal if I sell it. But I'm not going to sell it. X50 factory option, rare manual gearbox car in one of the best exterior and interior colour combinations. All original, no modifications. As it was specified when it left the factory.
I'm not looking for cheap servicing or someone who allows me to supply the oil and filter. I'm looking fir value servicing to Porsche standards.
My worry is that OPC Chester was acquired by Sytner last year. The dealer principal who I got to know well (Karl) has left to join BMW. He respected my choice and loyalty. I don't know if those fixed price modern classic service rates will be available under the Sytner ownership. And a new chief who doesn't know me from Adam and came from Sytner Bentley in Manchester.
I will go there first to find out service prices.
If not agreeable, I may consider JMH (indy) on my doorstep who have two OPC-trained technicians who know 996 Turbos inside out. They are also well-priced on their fixed price service costs.
I don't think the main dealer service history adds a premium on an older car as a buyer. I always check who has serviced the car as part of my due diligence checks. If its a reputable firm like RPM Technik, Porsche Torque and others then I'm fine with the cars history provided the PPI looks good.
You are entitled to your view. And if it's not from a 'reputable firm'? You"d walk away, right? You are your own choice in such a situation. How do you know who is reputable and who is not? "Porsche R Us" in Upper Nether Regions is a reputable indy? Or "Porsche Service Experts" in lower pubic symphisis county are reputable indys?
Everybody's different, my car until recently has been to an OPC every two years, however since I bought it in 2010 I've always had them do minor services and then have changed the extra parts for the major myself using genuine parts, the extra parts for the major are spark plugs, air filter, pollen filter normally although 1 also included the drive belt and fuel filter. I've got the OPC invoices for all those parts.
Last year my car was due a major and when I inquired the price of the minor at OPC had doubled.
I made the decision to do the whole major service myself again using genuine parts. I enjoyed doing it and have put the invoices in my massive history folder. The cost was £300
So why did I do it myself, well 996ts are not worth that much for some reason and mine has 70k, I've kept it in very good condition so if I did decide to sell I know it would come out of a PPI well, and I will obviously say it's had Porsches recommended servicing done using genuine parts.
If they say they don't want to buy my excellent condition perfectly serviced car with rare extended leather interior and aerokit, thats never seen salt, so be it, they can go and try and find better.
I'm sure my attitude will horrify some people, but there are quite a few of us self servicing now, even I think Uncle Monty who has a super low mileage minter!
Porsche made a crap decision in my opinion when they doubled their pricing. You can only take the proverbial so much!
Its easy to identify the reputable independents servicing places in London and the commuter belt. They're well known. There also well known dealers such as RSJ, 911virgin, JZM, Paragon and William Crawford (miles away in Cornwall) to name a few.
If I didn't know the place then I wouldn't buy the car. I'm sure others have a different approach. My approach works for me as I haven't purchased a lemon or a car that's resulted in large unexpected bills (yet). Everyone has their own approach so I'm not sure what made you feel so defensive.
