Hi, I thought I'd share my solution for a drop in replacement for the ASK Amp. Mine failed and I was quoted £360 for repair. A used amp is £160 or so, with no guarantee it will last. So I devised my own replacement. This uses the
Pioneer
GM-D1004, but there's an equivalent
Sony
the XM-S400D which is pretty much identical. I got the
Pioneer
for £92 and everything you need bar some tools/Bullet connectors is in the box.
Points
to note:
This is a drop in replacement and uses the Stock wiring including power and Speaker wires.
The amp is on a 15 Amp fuse so fine as a direct powered option, given the 25 Amp fuse rating to the power supply. You can swap the Fuse to 15 Amp at the foot well fuse box if you like.
You will lose the front center speaker with this upgrade (but having such a speak goes against my old school audio sensibilities anyway). I have no idea how the ASK Amp mixes/puts full range to the front centre channel and no idea why you'd want to do this anyway.
I am only using 2 channels of a 4 channel amp. But that's fine.
This amp can use speaker signal to power on/off, but the Red/Black line from the car is the Amp Power switching signal, so you can connect that the the amp remote power and have the amp power on and off as normal.
The Amp is auto switching between speaker/line level input, so it's fine to hook up like this.
You will need:
Pioneer GM-D1004 or Sony XM-S400D Amplifier (Or the Kenwood KAC-M1814 which I'm sure would work and has adjustable input level)
Some basic crimping tools and bullet connectors, or else wire splices/butt connectors to go direct to the loom.
A 987.1 Cayman (or possibly a Boxster) with the Sound Plus package.
I sacrificed my broken amp and Desoldered the connector, so I could use it and leave my Loom in tact.
I used a kindly found wiring reference list on this forum, and made an overly complicated Wiring reference Chart:

Remote Power
I hope that makes sense. It did to me at the time. It is specific to the Pioneer amp. 'OUT' refers to the loom to the car, 'IN' refers to the connections to/from the amp.
This is the loom that results in. I have kept some redundant cables as I intend to use this amp more fully in the future.
I crimped the wires into the Plug pins and soldered them, then used hot glue as stress relief. So it looks messy.
This is the final install with the Plug zip tied in place and the Amp velcro'd to the bulkhead. A more skilled fabricator could rework the amp casing to hold this amp but this works for me.
The result: Working woofers again. Note you may have to EQ them down a touch as the Pioneer amp is significantly more punchy than the mosfet ASK unit it replaces.
Ultimately my intention is to relocate this amp into the cabin, and run a proper 3 Way front end with upgraded Speakers and perhaps some Time alignment/digital processing, but for now this works just fine.
Hi, thank you for the detailed notes.
I am trying to figure out what you did for 11, "Black and Red Remote Power". Which cable is it from the
Pioneer
Amp? The black cable from the amp you already used in 2 for ground.
Thanks!
