Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Doesn't happen under load, and when I changed the gearbox oil it was clean and free of any particles.

Suggestion
These gearboxes have a fairly common problem where a worn pinion bearing in the gearbox causes a whine on the over run, do hope it's not that!
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This may just be a normal sound for 996.1 , but I haven’t driven any others so don’t know!
There is a whining/howling from somewhere when the car is off load (lifting off throttle or coasting down hill etc). Disappears when I accelerate. Not there during idling.
It sounds like it’s coming from the front but I can’t be sure. There is brand new oil in the gearbox and it’s a C2
Where should I start with diagnosing, or is it just a 996 foible?
Don't lift off simples
These gearboxes have a fairly common problem where a worn pinion bearing in the gearbox causes a whine on the over run, do hope it's not that!
So I gave it a bit of a listen whilst driving today. The noise diminishes quite a lot if I press the clutch whilst coasting, and also about the same if I blip the throttle whilst coasting. The noise is still just about there, but very much quieter. It seems to get quieter as the car warms up too.
So it sounds like the noise is coming from the gearbox when a reverse load (from your wheels) is applied to it. Personally I'm of the opinion that noise is there on everybody's but for some reason with your's it's more pronounced. Hence why I asked at the beginning if you had powerflex gear mount inserts in as they are known to enhance the NVH. Could also be some mechanical noise in the gearbox that's louder when colder......jury's out.
