This is not a probability of success.

It looked good so then i used some cellulose thinners to remove the rest of the black thinking it was paint or could it just be a build up of exhaust soot ?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I accidentally allowed water to hold inside the exhaust tips and therefore over a few weeks surface rust started to congregate. I started to clean it away by rubbing it down with wet / dry paper and got some progress. It removed the black inside the tip and then exposed what i recon is stainless steel ? It looked good so then i used some cellulose thinners to remove the rest of the black thinking it was paint or could it just be a build up of exhaust soot ? Can some confirm if when new the exhaust tips were left as bare stainless steel or were they painted black. If originally stainless, i'll keep scrubbing to get all black off Personally i like the look of bare stainless but will then have to keep cleaning them.

POST 2Original post

Stainless. They will go black again quite quickly. Next time just use some Fertan rust converter on the rusty patches. Overnight it will turn them black too - and they stay that way if my fire grate is anything to go by

POST 3Original post

They will soot up again quite quick, but you can keep them from corroding by spraying some Bilt Hamber Atom-Mac on them. I use it on my brake discs too to prevent surface corrosion. It’s great stuff. Atom-Mac - Bilt Hamber Water-borne migratory and contact corrosion inhibitor. bilthamber.com
