Suggestion

Hartech is a recognised upgrade not just repair which is recognised in the value of the vehicle to some extent eg you may repair it for a few £’000 less but you car would not be worth as much to the market afterwards ;-)

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I believe the car is suffering with bore score and am having it checked on Monday by Porsche Kebt Specialists with a proper borescope. Wondering what options are available to me; Already aware of Hartech and their costs but wondering how much id save going elsewhere (or if id pay more) and also potentially swapping the engine for something else. Based in South East London/Kent area so any places are highly recommended if the news is worst case scenario

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 2734094

Id say im doing maybe half a litre every 200miles, have all the symptoms but gonna switch to some bore specific oil see if i can limit the damage. Has the ticking and also sooty left exhaust. Havent had the bores check but will be done on Monday

POST 4Original post

Factor in the full cost ie that includes affect on resale of the car. Hartech is a recognised upgrade not just repair which is recognised in the value of the vehicle to some extent eg you may repair it for a few £’000 less but you car would not be worth as much to the market afterwards ;-)

POST 5Original post

There are cheaper rebuild options involving steel liners and many specialists can rebuild this way. Hartech is the gold standard and use their own custom made aluminium sleeves. A full 6 cylinder Hartech build will be more expensive than, for example, a local three steel liner rebuild, so there are lower cost options if you look around. This choice depends on the value of the car and how long you plan to keep it as much as anything else. As mentioned above, a good documented rebuild adds value in any sale.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 2734105

Cheers for the reply, seen the cost of the standard Hartech full rebuild being around 11k + vat give or take. Thinking at that point is it worth going up to the 3.9 they offer and going bigger bore especially if they warranty their engines. Watched FSI's videos on the matter and Alusil liners defo seem to be the way forward rather than Steel or the s*** Nikosil ones

POST 7Original post

Out of interest... does anyone know if the Hartech warranty still applies to a change of ownership.? I thought i read soimewhere that it doesn't., or was that a dream i had.!

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 2734117

Im pretty sure from what ive read it doesnt change ownership but ill have a little dig through their website when im bored at work

POST 9Original post

I’m sure the hartech warranty is quite short timewise anyway, i think you would be mad to get a hartech rebuild and sell on soon after. In that situation a cheap steel liner build and re-sell would be a better (financial) option.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 2734150

I dont really plan on selling the motor, because she is a gorgeous car and have unfortunately fallen for her the few weeks ive had her. She is an 04 C2 with only 65k miles so seems a waste to sell. At least doing the whole job gives me peace of mind for a fair few years. Reckon it would be cheaper to get a hold of the liners used in the Turbo and GT models and use them?

POST 11Original post

I assume you bought it a few weeks ago with borescore ‘cheaply’ therefore the sums could work out ok. GT and Turbo are a different engine, if those liners were available I don’t think hartech would exist.

POST 12Original post

As above presume you bought knowing it had bore score so you must must have had a plan

POST 13Original post

I really do hope you bought this cheap in the knowledge of bore score.. would be a rotten piece of luck had you not...!! Was the car advertised as having potential bore score..?

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 2734163

Ca Car wasnt advertised as having bore score but similar models with same mileage etc are selling for around about 10k above what i paid for it. So i said to myself id happily pay 10k as itll be around market value for one that hasnt had a rebuild. I did have a plan i.e go to Hartech or another more local company but wanted to see my other options

POST 15Original post

You can go to AMS Porsche who does the work and sends the crankcase halves to Hartech to do the liners. It will be cheaper and they have good feedback.
