Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

(came to me that way, via Carvana) and they apparently bypassed the amps in the car and ran copper to each speaker or something.
Leading evidence: 'Run copper' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'error in the description (leaving out 2009-12 cayman)' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Recommend the' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suspected cause
That's probably an error in the description (leaving out 2009-12 Cayman), but who knows.

And as Schwinn stated, it wouldn't be surprising if the OEM system has been replaced by an aftermarket head unit.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Buying a 2010
987.2
S and looking to replace the radio with something that has
Car Play
. I know it has a
Bose system
(and recognize the issues I am facing). Is that the only thing I need to know -
Bose
vs. non-
Bose
? I see other acronyms like ASK and CD30 but don't know what that means yet.
First, be sure the
Bose system
is really still in there. My car had
Bose
before, but now has a
Pioneer HU
(came to me that way, via Carvana) and they apparently bypassed the amps in the car and ran copper to each speaker or something. I have left it alone for now, as it functions, but some day I'll get up in there.
Assuming you have
Bose
, and you keep the stock amps active, you can still do a swap. You will need a MOST optical adapter to convert the signal from the replacement HU to the optical format needed by the amps in the car. The rest is pretty trivial. The one thing I have heard is to make sure the volume is turned at least mid-way before disconnecting the system - the stock radio apparently adjusts a volume level inside the amp so if it's too low in there, then you won't be able to get it back higher. Of course, too-high could be an issue as well... see if there are threads about where to adjust it.
ASK is the amplifier system used on the "Premium" sound, without
Bose
. You don't need to worry about that.
I believe CD30 is a changer or CD player for the stock setup. If you have this, then it can be removed or ignored, as the new HU won't likely work with it anyway.
Many recommend the
Erisin
unit which is well documented on a thread here. It's an Android based HU, but I believe it does
Carplay
as well. Even if you don't use that particular unit, there is a lot of good info there so it's worth a read.
Are you planning to do the work yourself? If so, read up on the various threads... the
Erisin
one is a good place to start. I you are having a shop do it, they likely know about the MOST adapter and will handle it pretty easily... but you may want to ask for a "good" shop in your area anyway.
I think he's referring to the CDR30, which is the standard radio on
987.2
. The optional radio is a NAV system which I believe is called PCM3. On an 'S', the premium sound system was standard with
Bose
optional.
There was also an optional CD changer mounted in the trunk.
And as Schwinn stated, it wouldn't be surprising if the OEM system has been replaced by an aftermarket head unit. You should probably post a picture for identification.
BTW, I think the
erisin
is for
981
only.
Don's very long thread seems to be a
HEREGOES unit
, at least that's the name of the
AliExpress
store. Its very hard to locate an actual brand name on that web site.
Heregoes store,
I don't think that is the same as Erisin, but there could be some connection. And yes, there is an Erisin model that claims to be for the 987. Oddly, it only claims to be for :
Porsche 911 (997) 2005-2008
Porsche Cayman (987) 2005-2008
Porsche Boxster (987) 2005-2012
That's probably an error in the description (leaving out 2009-12 Cayman), but who knows. Besides the bezel color, I believe there were some minor differences between Gen 1 & 2 radios. But AFAIK there shouldn't be a difference between a Boxster and Cayman radio.
Ummmm.... no, mine is from
Aliexpress
, and has no real name, we usually just paste up the URL for it. The vendors name of "
HEREGOES
" was sometimes attached with "NOTHING" - but they've seemingly stood the test of time, the majority of people who've installed them are happy and still using them. As was noted there is a rather extensive (23 page) thread on the subject. A tiny bit of looking will reveal it.
Ahh, I thought yours was Erisin. So be it... no biggie. But they do make one for the 987.2:
Erisin ES8558C 7" IPS Android 13.0 Car Multimedia Wireless CarPlay Android Auto Radio For Porsche 911 Cayman Boxster 987 GPS DSP 4G SIM LTE WiFi BT5.0
Octa Core, 2*A75+6*A55 64-bit 1820MHz CPU, 4G+64G, Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, TDA7851L with DSP Amplifier, IPS, 4G Module for Internet, Split Screen

Understood. Again, you'll have to see if you have Bose or not. No real way to tell FOR SURE without pulling the HU. If there is an optical cable from it connected, then you'll need the MOST adapter. But, beyond that, any HU will work, so you don't really need to know more beyond that, I don't think?
So you might consider looking at

There are quite a few people here in this forum with a lot of knowledge about using this one in place of your stock unit. You do want to know if you have Bose audio - that's easy to tell. Look at the bigger speaker on the door. If you have Bose there will be a badge. No badge, no Bose. Easy-peasy.. and there can be a MOST fiber even when you don't have Bose - Porsche used it for the 6 disk CD player they placed in the Frunk in the upper storage compartment. If that's the case you can safely ignore it. The new unit won't work with the CD player (you can probably sell it on eBay for more than the replacement headunit)..
And when you have a chance - please visit

and introduce yourself and your car. We love pics - so make us happy with some shots of your Porsche.
BTW - I'm moving this to the 987 electronics subforum - it is a better fit there. HANG ON.. and
keep hands and feet inside the thread for your safety and protection

Ref: Erisin Android/CarPlay headunit, I strongly urge against using it. I contributed my unhappy experience and outcome with attempting to install the Erisin unit in my 981 GT4 with CDR audio in the long Erisin thread referenced above.
Long story short, I was NEVER able to get HF/BT calling to work without an echo back of the caller's voice back to them with a half-second delay. "Support" from Erisin was spotty at best. I finally gave up and returned the HU for a replacement which never came. Had to dispute payment with PP to finally get a refund—4 months of wasted effort and frustration.
Check Crutchfield here in the US; they now have double DIN units with compatible mounting kits for 987/991 Porsches. That's the direction I will be taking.
