Thought I would share my story of making my
CDR-30
much better...
I recently purchased a 2011
Boxster
. The basic
CDR-30
(non
Bose
) was not good. It did have the AUX input option in the center console but that's it. I have improved it to the point that it's actually pretty darned good. Not amazing, but about as good as average "premium" sound in my other cars. Here is what I did:
- Installed rear speaker kit from
Suncoast
. Check Youtube install videos. Use a knife, not a
dremel
(tried both). Wires tucked into center console, not door sills.
- Installed iSimple ISFM22 for bluetooth audio (I spliced into the Aux audio in, and used the white "power antenna" wire for power.
- Installed
Kenwood
KSC-SW11 subwoofer. This is a compact powered unit that I put on the floor behind the drivers seat. It would also fit upright behind the drivers seat. I couldn't quite make it work under the passenger seat, but that would have been ideal. As it is, there is little to no loss of drivers seat adjustment. Power is switched form the white "power antenna" wire and is powered from the same wire that powers the
CDR-30
(red/brown) using a tap behind the
CDR-30
. I tapped the rear speaker wires for the source.
All in all, it was a minor PIA to get all the taps to make solid connections. There was a little trial and error. Also, I'd string suggest running all wires through the center console. Lots of room and you can just tuck them in there, no need to take apart anything, and no need to deal with door sills (as some instructions suggest). It is a visibly clean install.
Here are the settings I use. There was quite a bit of experimentation, and I even used a spectrum analyzer (not too useful for car audio). It now sounds pretty darned decent. These settings work well at all volumes and top up or down. Don't expect miracles, but I'm much happier. As soon as
Carplay
goes wireless, I'll replace the
CDR-30
, which should improve things quite a bit further.
Radio: Bass -2, Treble +3, Loudness on
Bluetooth: Bass +2, Treble +3 Loudness on
Sub: About 3/4 the way up
Wow, very cool. The CDR 30 is just about useless. That's why I'm going to install a louder
exhaust
...
Interesting, does anyone know what kind of amps that white antenna wire can handle? I’d like to install both a Bluetooth unit and a USB phone charger…
