Hi,
Does anybody know, tried this new Android 13 based
Porsche
headunit that popped up recently on Ebay/Ali, etc.?
Can it be any better, more reliable than the well known old one?
For example:
Pardon our interruption...
Thanks. I have a
987.2
Cayman
2010 so that won't work. But I noticed the ebay listing says
"
Porsche Cayman (987) 2005-2008
Porsche Boxster (987) 2005-2012"
which seems incorrect. A gen 2 Boxster and Cayman both would be the same. So there's some bull-$hit with this vendor.
There is a black version of this headunit, as I see. So that should work for .2 cars.
IIRC, there are some wiring changes in the harness between gen 1 and 2. Fairly minor, but not plug&play. Without more info on the manufacturer and vendor I'm dubious. I'll keep watching to see if it shows up on US Ebay.
Have you looked at:

That one is pretty much sorted out for the 987 (and likely the 997 since they share the audio electronics). The claim of Android Version 13 is questionable - so far the Chinese have made some mistakes in labeling the devices, and they use some trickery to make the unit display as Android 12 (in the case of the one above.) In reality - the one above was running Android 10 I believe, tracked down with a diagnostics application. It didn't matter a bunch - it worked adequately with the OS it came with.
I see the one you're looking at does have physical buttons - the buttons on the other unit are somewhat useable and useful. It's hard to beat real buttons for tactile feedback that you hit the right thing. The back button is the most often used (mine is actually a bit worn..)
Just reviewed the specs - they're OK - but the WiFi is listed as 2.4Ghz - 5Ghz is pretty much standard at least in the US. You could still connect with 2.4 - just half the speed for downloads or streaming content. I also noted no option for a SIM card for a data/phone connection. One of the configurations of the other unit offers that - I have it - and a dedicated data subscription for it - it's useful if you don't want to rely on your phone for that (or your data plan on the phone has limits..)
I see it comes with a CanBus adaptor - I didn't see a fiber adaptor for cars with the Bose system, maybe I missed that.
Interesting - but at this time I see no need to change what I have - the Aliexpress Heregoes unit.
