AFAIK, the halogen and the xenons are never on at the same time - the halogens are only used for flashing and when the xenons are on, it's the xenon through a different lens that makes the high beam.

Suggestion

The high beams when flashed use halogen bulbs because they light instantly, otherwise the highs are xenon.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I just took my Cayman out tonight to check out the lights and was quite surprised to find the low beam is xenon but the high beam appears to be halogen. Audit call this set up xenon headlights while myM3 had xenons for both high and low and were properly called bi-xenon. What does bi-xenon mean to Porsche...that they give you two lights, one on each side of the car? Alan

POST 2Original post

My Xenons are bi-Xenon you sure you weren't blinded by the light? /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/wink_smile.gif

POST 3Original post

The high beams when flashed use halogen bulbs because they light instantly, otherwise the highs are xenon.

POST 4Original post

When I put my high beams on the lower halogen bulb illuminated. I will check it again or take it to the dealer. Thanks. Alan

POST 5Original post

The halogens come on with the high beams but when I put the car next to a wall I could also see the xenons got a little higher. Last night I didn't have a wall for reference and only noticed the halogens. Alan

POST 6Original post

That is correct, the Xenons reposition when the high beams are on.

POST 7Original post

The system uses one fixed D2S HID bulb in each headlight for both high & low beams with a movable shutter to partially block the light & provide the low beam cutoff . There's an auxiliary high beam halogen bulb necessary to permit high beam flashing when the HID bulb is off since HID takes a bit of time to fully ignite. The halogen supplements the HID high beam. This is a common 'bi-xenon' arrangement used by a number of manufacturers.

POST 8Original post

So does this mean that with high beams on, its just the Xenon bulb through a different reflector ... OR can you have both the Halogen and Xenon bulb on at the same time, like auxiliary driving lights. In fact, are there ANY auxiliary driving lights sold specifically or endorsed by Porsche ...or auxiliary fog lights because the spec calls for 35watt fogs which sound pretty weak to me?

POST 9Original post

AFAIK, the halogen and the xenons are never on at the same time - the halogens are only used for flashing and when the xenons are on, it's the xenon through a different lens that makes the high beam. I don't know of any auxiliary driving lights made by Porsche or that they recommend. if there are, I'll bet someone on this board will know about it. brad
