Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Again, I used the Sylvania kit and the sealer worked well for several years.

Suggestion
The best sealer comes from the factory, but it's expensive to replace the entire headlight.

You can use the heat gun but be careful or you could damage to lens.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi everybody my headlights on my 996 have started looking pretty shabby so I took them out to restore them and I'm noticing what looks like a clear protective film peeling? I don't know if this is factory since I'm not the original owner, or is it something aftermarket I could put a heat gun to and peel off? So take a look at these pictures and tell me should I try to peel this film or just continue with the usual headlight restoration process thanks in advance everybody.
That is a protective film that can be removed. Use hot water and pour it over the headlights and peel it off that way. This helps to steam the film off, which softens the glue more than just the heat gun alone. Plus the heat is spread more evenly much safer this way.
Looks like film to me, steam is a safe bet or the hot water mentioned above. You can use the heat gun but be careful or you could damage to lens. If its old it could potentially just come off in small chunks so be prepared for that. Any adhesive left afterwards 3M makes a good remover for it that you can generally find at auto stores.
As googone20 said, this definitely looks like a clear bra type of film that was installed. Certainly not stock. Remove and hopefully your restoration efforts after that will be minimal!
Thanks guys it was a aftermarket filmed that I steamed and removed. They did delaminate the headlights. I did my best myself in my garage but they still need a professional sanding im assuming because they still look a little Blotchy.
Thanks for advice.
Here's a before and after
Sand off the upper layer of crude and take down to fresh clear plastic. Lots of products available for that. I did the Sylvania kit of my Volvo lights and it did the wet sanding very well.
Be sure to seal it with an appropriate plastic sealer. Again, I used the Sylvania kit and the sealer worked well for several years. No matter what the problem will return. The best sealer comes from the factory, but it's expensive to replace the entire headlight.
Scotty Kilmer was saying that Meguier's has a sealer that you reapply every year. Stated that his stock lights have held up for years while the rest got yellow. I'm going to try that next time I sand and seal.
There is a trick to removing the headlight washer cover.
Then you can sand underneath.
Use a bicycle pump on the hose on the back.
Grab the washer shaft and use a small screwdriver to gently pry off the cover.
Makes restoring the headlight lens much easier.
