Reported cause

Just happy to have it fixed, presumably this was because it was the gearbox and not the engine mounts, but how the hell they managed to sell a brand new car with a failure like that is a bit worrying.

Got it booked in to my local OPC (after contacting the original OPC that I purchased the car from) and got the call later the day it was in to say it wasn't the exhaust but the PADM that failed (no waring light), part/s on order via warranty and it's getting fitted on the 5th of next month.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

PADM has failed on my GT4 and it is booked in September to get the offending item replaced. Since it went a week ago it's either been raining or I've been on the motorway so can't comment on what it actually feels like! Anyone have experience of what impact it has on handling, I'm off to France immediately after its booked in however if I went without it being fixed would I notice in the alps or would it ruin the trip?

POST 2Original post

In a similar situation with my GT4. Issue occurred on my last trackday. Haven’t noticed any difference as such myself so far. Collective knowledge says that It fails to stiff mode… which if it’s linked to PASM modes would be on for me anyway on track. I press the button even though my dampers are no longer linked to it. Also booked for September with the hope that backorder of parts has arrived. I’ll continue using the car without worry. Back on track next week at Donny.

POST 3Original post

I had two fail on my 718 GTS (though not at the same time) and one fail on my 718 Spyder.I didn’t notice the difference on either car - road not track though .

POST 4Original post

Mine failed on my Spyder after driving all the way to Switzerland and I kid you not it failed when I threw it hard into the first left handed hairpin on the first Pass I drove. I pulled over did a quick google as I had not heard of it and continued , I just ignored it and genuinely I couldn't tell any difference and have been driving it for a few weeks with the warning pinging up when I start it everytime. It's actually going in tmrw to get it replaced under warranty but I do not expect it to feel any different when it comes back.

POST 5Original post

Looking it at another way, if the alert didn’t come up informing a PADM failure how many here would know? Had a few go when I had the 981 CS. The car felt no different. Not had the pleasure with the GT4 yet.

POST 6Original post

Even when its working, I can't feel any difference!

POST 7Original post

Failed on my GT3…didn’t notice any difference. Maybe on track it might show up but not for someone of my ability. Had it changed and about two months later the other one went. “That happens about 50% of the time but Porsche won’t let us change both” Oh good…..

POST 8Original post

So from a technical perspective, what difference does it make ? Minimise "wind-up" in the transmission ?

POST 9Original post

Have had 2 go on my 718 Spyder, noticed no difference to the drive either time

POST 10Original post

ChrisW. said: So from a technical perspective, what difference does it make ? Minimise "wind-up" in the transmission ? In sport plus, it stiffens the transmission (or engine) mounts, depending on the car you have. I don't doubt it makes a difference, but it's very difficult to tell because it's also combined with a "hard" redline and uninterrupted gearchanges. Perhaps it would be easier to tell on a manual car. Even then I think it's partially RPM linked, but I could be wrong.

POST 11Original post

When they fail / short out they should revert to the stiffer setting so in theory the impact will be more obvious when when driving around slowly rather than when you are hooning around hairpins in the Alps.

POST 12Original post

asbi said: Left side trans mount failed on mine, results in slightly “thrummy” idle - OPC has parts on order from DE…. Wasn't the lack of all these complicated and marginal parts the reason why we liked the air-cooled RS's so much ? The worst that might happen was an ABS pump or DMA relay .... ??

POST 13Original post

Weirdly this happened to my GT4 last night. Car has done a tad over 5K and it was a spirited drive in the Peak district given we've finally had some decent weather. I'd stopped for a while then literally set off over a small hump back bridge and the error came up. Like many I had no idea what this error related to, so pulled over and dug the manual out. Called the OPC this morning, earliest they can get me in is 2 weeks, no mention of not driving etc but did say it's quite common. Hopefully they have the parts in stock, but I doubt it.

POST 14Original post

Any idea on the cost to fix if you didn't have a warranty?

POST 16Original post

WG said: £1500 per side I believe. If your car is 3+ yrs old… that’s your 2yrs warranty paying for itself and then some, right there.

POST 17Original post

It’s like you’re all talking in a club and careless of anyone outside of the club. What does PADM mean!?

POST 18Original post

One of mine failed on my 981S Cayman recently. I was quoted just over £1K for supply and fit of a replacement by a local Porsche independent specialist and a tad over £800 for supply only from my local OPC.

Given the rate at which they fail, and the difficulty of detecting any difference, you might almost think that they are merely there to generate extended warranty sales…

Had this come up today on my 981 GTS. Brief panic until I got a signal for a google search….. Bit annoying. My car hasn’t been on track or driven hard. It might end up covering the two year warranty I put on a few months back :-)

POST 24Original post

I took mine in today. Will hopefully get the lowdown by tomorrow - although I've asked them to call me BEFORE doing any unscrewing of bolts or touching anything that might affect the setup. I don't want them to undo the car unless they have the parts in hand, ready to install.

So mine has been confirmed as left mount? Parts on back order from factory, so mine has been ordered this AM. Hopefully will arrive in next batch. Covered by warranty. As part of the repair they normally have to reset geo to complete the job card under warranty. But you do have the option to decline this, which I have done… as std Porsche settings would be a world away from what I’m currently running and they’d reset the front also.

Mine went on my 911 Turbo S (991) after a full throttle blast down a slip road. I can't tell the difference but it'll be going in under warranty when i get the chance as if nothing else, the error message every time I start it is doing my head in.

POST 32Original post

Been in today to have it confirmed, right mount faulty. On back order no idea when they will have stock, looking at around £1700 fitted. Luckily under warranty.

POST 33 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It looks like 718 PADM's are out of stock, anyone know if the 981 GT4's are available....design 911 had them a few weeks ago however can't see them listed now? Mine is in the dealer a week tomorrow so will also report back.

POST 34Original post

My understanding is that Porsche are trying to change supplier for this part. There will not be an update for weeks, and there is no know supply date. I collected my car last week… no point it just sitting on their compound outside waiting for some unwitting person to reverse into it and for an act of God hailstorm to befall it. All of which I’d have little to, no recourse for. I might investigate solid mount options…. Manthey did have something for the 981 GT4 development car, but don’t usually recommend them due to NVH. Edited by TDT on Tuesday 29th August 15:16

POST 35Original post

I don't recall there being an issue on the 981 ... is this a supplier issue ... hence the change ? How annoying !!!!

POST 36Original post

Hi , Can anyone definitively confirm the following 2 things : 1) If the PADM fails , does it fail in the STIFFENED position ? 2) If the PSE ( Porsche Factory Sports Exhaust-OEM ) fails , does it fail in the LOUD position ? As I only use my car for high days and holy days , if the above 2 items failed in the STIFFENED and LOUD positions respectively I would be tempted to leave them unreplaced once the warranty runs out . Can you see any problem or issue in doing that ?

POST 37Original post

Recently had the same experience with a PADM failure on my GT4. OPC advised part was on back order with no defined timeline for delivery/resolution. Raised the issue with Porsche Finance (VWFS) and registered a formal case. By chance (apparently) a part was found within days and the car was booked in for the work to be completed. On top of this VWFS provided a compensation payment plus a pro rata sum of the deposit/monthly payment for the period the issue persisted. Would highly recommend those with Porsche finance agreements to raise a case so it has an internal staff member tracking progress.

As I only use my car for high days and holy days , if the above 2 items failed in the STIFFENED and LOUD positions respectively I would be tempted to leave them unreplaced once the warranty runs out . Can you see any problem or issue in doing that ? 1. Yes typically. These could be coded out after the initial warranty period. 2. No they can seize in either position, or the solenoid can fail. A seized valve in the open position will fail the open / close cycle and won't sound as good. Bear in mind that it is generally easy to prevent, moisture at cold start sits in the mechanism so use your car regularly. Many Porsche owners like to wash their car on the drive, cold start and park in the garage for extended periods.

I am with vwfs as well so hopefully will get a similar result. I don’t see why I should have to pay for a car with a known fault for that length of time. I have also written to Porsche uk and asked them to extend my warranty as this is a well documented fault.

POST 41 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

A few have suggested (including on this thread) that the delay could be due to a redesign or sourcing a more reliable supplier. If this is the case I can wait as the car is imo completely unaffected and I'd rather they replace once with a part that is hopefully improved.

I was expecting a replacement cost amounting into 4 figures from an OPC !

A similar position to my 981 GTS where the sports exhaust is out of stock for the forseeable future as well!

I took the car in for diagnosis - they confirmed the failed part - processed warranty claim for the investigation and ordered part. But there is no ETA on when the part will arrive. I took the car back. No point it sitting around outside in all conditions, waiting to get reversed into on their compound, when it could be tucked up in a blanket in my garage, lol.

Other than a copy/paste do you have anything in black and white you can email? I raised the same with Porsche finance and they basically laughed it off and that was that. The good news is mine was replaced a few weeks ago now, although they did forget the 4 wheel alignment so I had to return the following week for that. Not sure why it requires an alignment for a gearbox mount, but it was FOC as it's under warranty.

POST 66Original post

Alignment because they have to bolt the bracing triangle on the rear sub-frame, and have to drop the gearbox… when they put it all back together it might be slightly shifted left or right… which changes your alignment… so they make sure its back within factory ranges… thats not the same as saying the car will actually be straight though….Another story for another day, but thats the reason.

You need to let the complaint run its course for 2 months. You can then involve the financial ombudsman. If you look on their website you will find many similar cases that they have upheld the complaints. I would include that they laughed you off. The financial ombudsman will request all the calls all letters you have sent to the finance company and will not take palming you off lightly.

Ridiculous that now they say they have a ‘new’ part that they don’t replace/uprate both at the same time. Seeing cases of other side failing within weeks of a repair? And then now parts are on backorder again. With no ETA. This needs some kind of class action surely.

Mine (well just the NS one) being changed today. The part number for the replacement is 981.375.059.86 whereas the previous (02/2022 build) and OS part is 981.375.059.84. I am not sure this supports redesigned part theory, more like a revision. I left my suspension set-up with them but they will set it back to stock so I'm back up from Devon to Nuneaton last day before Christmas for Center Gravity to have the suspension restored.

Just found this thread. I picked up a new 718 Boxster GTS in December, delivered to my home from an OPC 200 odd miles away. Almost immediately I noticed a rattle, which sounded like it was coming from the exhaust at low idle-ish speeds. Then I was away over Christmas, the weather was crap and then back to work so didn't really drive it much, but after a lot of stop start traffic a few weeks later on a Sunday drive with the wife it was obviously not right with the rattle starting to annoy me. Got it booked in to my local OPC (after contacting the original OPC that I purchased the car from) and got the call later the day it was in to say it wasn't the exhaust but the PADM that failed (no waring light), part/s on order via warranty and it's getting fitted on the 5th of next month. At the time I had no idea what PADM was and was just happy the rattle was going, but from reading this thread....... 1. The car had the fault brand new? 2. Why didn't I get a warning light? 3. Why has nobody else mentioned a rattle?

Just an update on this, car went in, asked why no waring light and why a rattle when it's supposed to tighten, got a garbled response due to the guy not having a clue, basically. They replace the mounts to the gearbox and it's stopped the rattle, so as they say, go figure. Just happy to have it fixed, presumably this was because it was the gearbox and not the engine mounts, but how the hell they managed to sell a brand new car with a failure like that is a bit worrying.

Depends on a couple of things really…. 1. How reliable the new updated mounts are? Too early to say. 2. Are you intending to run the car with extended warranty. If yes, then 1 doesn’t matter. I had 3 go and the left bank exhaust valve jam in the 6yrs I had the car.(981 CS). Around £6.5k to replace. It was all done under warranty.. currently 2yrs warranty, £1250. 3yrs, £1870. I had a GT4 for 2yrs now… no PADM failure, YET! I’m expecting it though. I guess it all depends what you want from the car.

My 2015 GT4 had no failures whatsoever. Eight years and 35000 miles with plenty of track days and, the car never missed a beat. What a car ...

I wonder if how they are stored has anything to do with failure rate? If they get wet and stand outside etc. The mounts are quite exposed.

My car is always garaged (even on a wet trackday ) But still had left side failure. My 981 GT4 didnt have an issue in 36k mls of my driving over 5years. 39k mls in total.

This was my daily fun car so I would guess that for at least three quarters of its time it was not garaged ... I now have an arrangement where my daily fun is at least under cover ... hence not bothered about steel brakes ...

Both my 718 GTS and 718 Spyder was/is garaged and never taken out in wet weather and I had two failures on both cars so water ingress wouldn’t seem to be the issue

POST 114Original post

Maybe being too dry is the issue then…. lol. The mystery continues then. Thanks guys.

POST 115Original post

My car is garaged from September to April and still the mounts have failed. The reason they gave me was water ingress lol. I don’t drive it in the rain with the cup2 tyres on.

POST 116Original post

Does the revised part have the same or a different PN as the previous chocolate version? My OPC are saying the mounts haven’t been revised, warranty claim obvs on a well tracked 2yr old car. Expected it to happen at some point.

[ [/The original, factory fitted part number was 98137505984 and the new part number is 98137505986

POST 118Original post

When I had mine done I was told they were re-designed parts. The issue, as I believe it was with a connection to the dynamic mount and not the mount itself, the connection fails and the mount goes passive. Speculation, but it may be the mounts are exactly the same but the connections only have been re-designed?
