Reported cause
The problem is the ID3 tag version; it needs to be v2.3.
Leading evidence: 'id3 tag version; it needs' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'id3 tag version; it needs' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check advanced menu' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I used the convert ID3 tags operation to get v2.3.

I use iTunes, is there an easy way to copy overthe 100-120 songs onto a 700MB CD, as opposed to burning 18-19 songs on the CD?

Paul, I used the mp3 conversion in iTunes on the AAC songs I had ripped from my CDs. It worked fine except for the v2.2 problem.
Outcome qualification: Negation, uncertainty or missing explicit repair resolution overrides the raw extraction signal.

Just make sure, as John said, that the "preferences - importing" is set to mp3 for importing and that you burn an mp3 CD by setting "preferences - burning".
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

In case anyone else has had the same problem:
I could see the song title but not the artist when playing mp3 CDs. The problem is the ID3 tag version; it needs to be v2.3. Not v2.2 or v2.4. Unfortunately, iTunes on a Mac creates v2.2 and I can't find anyway to change the default setting. The solution is to change the ID3 tag version after the song has been imported or converted.

Only having 1 CD in at a time pretty much necessitates using MP3's.
I use iTunes, is there an easy way to copy overthe 100-120 songs onto a 700MB CD, as opposed to burning 18-19 songs on the CD? My computer will just play them from a 'data' disk, but I don't think my car CD will do that?

Paul,
What I do is put all the songs I want to burn in a playlist and then burn the playlist to the mp3 format. iTunes will put about 150 of my songs on each cd and it will span cds if there are more songs in the playlist. BTW, it uses the playlist name as the cd name. Good luck.

Didn't work. I'm not sure if I need to create folders or? I just copied all my MP3 format songs over to a new play list in iTunes and burned to CD. CD player wouldn't read it in the car...
Paul
Paul, make sure the iTunes Burn preferences are set to MP3. You may well just want to create folders on your desktop and drag the songs out of iTunes into them and burn these directly to a data disc. You get more control over the folder arrangements that way. An MP3 disc just needs to be an ordinary data disc with MP3/WMA files in folders - the MPC searches the whole disc and will show a flattened list of the most-closely enclosing folders containing MP3 or WMA files.
If you've got any protected AAC files, you can burn them to audio CD then re-import as MP3 and then burn to MP3 CD, flipping Import and Burn preferences as needed.
Cheers,
John.
Thanks John. Will try that approach. I've got about 800 MP3 songs and the rest (1500 or so) are AAC...that's a lot of burn / rip to MP3 /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/sad_smile.gif

Paul,
You don't need to burn non-protected AAC files to an Audio CD and then re-rip those as MP3. You should be able to use an encoding program like iTunes-LAME (for Mac OS X) to do that for you. It's only Protected AAC files that have to be burned to an Audio CD first.
Can't I just do the MP3 conversion inside of iTunes? I hope so, because that's what I'm doing.
Loss of audio quality due to making a copy of a copy isn't a big deal for me. My hearing isn't what it use to be due to a few LOUD years in a heavy metal band....
Thanks for the help.

if you use iTunes and sort the playlist by Album - all is fine, don't need to worry about ID tags etc.... however, if you sort for ex based on genre.. the dis cannot be read by the Porsche... too many levels, i.e. sub folders... If you sort on song name, your Porsche audio will just show a list of MP3s, no sub folders
iTunes does allow you to convert ID3 tags to 2.3 or 2.4. Check the Advanced menu. It works perfectly. I just tried out the MP3 CD in the car. It's really not a big deal to just select your entire library and do the conversion. It takes very little time (unless you have 30k songs I guess) The only thing I haven't tried are 2.4 tags. (I assume they won't help)

hsjb,
I used the convert ID3 tags operation to get v2.3. I can't get import to write v2.3 originally; it always writes v2.2. I agree it is no big deal to convert to v2.3. Also, v2.4 didnot show the artist for me.
I'm not sure why iTunes only imports at 2.2. I did a quick search on the iTunes discussion board and it appears there is no way to specify import with 2.3 tags. I also opened the Mac OS X Version .plist file to see if there were any preferences related to ID3 and did not see anything obviously related.
Okay,
I just read every single topic/thread that relates to making an MP3 CD that can play in the Porsche.
I pick my car up tomorrow and would like to have a few CDs.
I have an IBM Compatable computer (not an Mac).
I did everything people said to do. I made a playlist and dragged all the songs I wanted into that folder. I then clicked on the 'Album' tab. I then went to 'edit' then 'preferences', then clicked on the 'advanced' tab, then clicked 'burning' and chose: Disk Format - 'MP3 CD'.
I then clicked the 'Burn' Icon and the CD said that it could not burn the CD because every single song was a 'AAC' file. I highlighted them all, right clicked and chose convert to MP3. It took about 30 minutes and it looked like it was converting all the files to 'MP3'. I then chose burn and it said that all files were 'AAC'. I checked them individually and they are all still 'AAC'. I tried doing them one at a time and that doesn't work either. It shows the bar going across like they are getting converted but they are not.
What should I do? Am I doing something wrong? I called my brother and he said that it is impossible to save songs in MP3 format to discs via IPOD. He says that, that is the reason he hates ITunes.
What should I do?
