Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I really hate the idea of ordering the OEM Nav. Is it possible to get the Bose speakers with stock radio and then go aftermarket, pull out the OEM radio, and go with like the Pioneer Avic to get Nav, Bluetooth, XM integrated at a far cheaper price than Porsche OEM unit?

POST 2Original post

It is possible to order the Bose Surround Sound without the PCM Porsche's NAV system.

POST 3Original post

Adding aftermarket equipment will bring down your trade-in value however. The PCM Nav system probably won't be worth much in trade-in in a few years either since the technology will be so out of date.

POST 4Original post

I would just go with a Tom Tom 700 or a magellan

POST 5Original post

Or my current favorite the Garmin Nuvi: http://gpsinformation.info/nuvi/nuvireview.html A new blue tooth model has just been announced for those who must use phones in their cars.

POST 6Original post

I have a Magellan and see no point in buying OEM Nav. But the question then becomes how to get Bluetooth and XM radio. Bluetooth is pretty simple if you add a MOT 1000 or something like that ... Won't look 'integrated' but works fine. XM is another issue entirely. You really want it hardware in an aux input not using those FM thingies.

POST 7Original post

I see panavise has a mount for the Cayman so you could just mount a Magallen (or whatever) to that and take it out of the car as needed. Might look a bit tacky 75132-105 [/quote]

POST 8Original post

Ouch! Putting an aftermarket nav system in a Porsche is like putting Janet Reno in a bikini...it can be done, but you sure as hell don't want to be there to see it. Paul

POST 9Original post

Ok now that is funny... Crazy fast - ready for a quick photoshop exercise?

POST 10Original post

I have the OEM NAV in my 2006 Boxster S which I believe is the same system as in the Cayman S. I prefer the OEM over after-market for a variety of reasons but I do have an issue with the OEM NAV which may be important to some people. The POI doesn't include "ordinary" stores like Best Buy or Circuit City (at least as far as I can determine.) On the issue of obsolesence, I doubt that the GPS technology will not work in a few years. There may be improvements that can't be rhetrofitted like WAAS in recent years (or a new system entirely in Europe). There is another risk however. While I expect there will be data updates available (at some ridiculus price, no doubt) that may not be the case. The older version NAV which uses CDs instead of a DVD does not have updates available and I don't think there is any way to upgrade. Ruby

POST 11Original post

Ruby: An software update already is available for our NAV. My car is at the dealer know and I was informed they will do these updates as a matter of course whenever a vehicle is in for anything else.

POST 12Original post

JHellow, Thanks, maybe that fixes my issue. Ruby

POST 13Original post

Chows, I have been looking into the same thing. I do not think it will work if you get the Bose system because everything is connected via the MOST system. I think you would have to go with the standard sound system otherwise the speakers would not work. The Avic Z1 will physically fit into the space of the oem radio but we will have to have a custom mounting bracket made in order to secure it in place. Even Crutchfield does not have a bracket for the caymen. Unlike the others, I do not think that this aftermarket unit would look bad if installed properly. For less than the cost of the oem nav unit, you can get a much better nav unit with XM and their navtraffic service, bluetooth, and ipod connectivity all in ONE unit. A no brainer to me.

POST 14Original post

That is exactly what I Was thinking. $4K for OEM nav and a phone is a bit insane. For $3K you can get the Z1 w/BT and a backup camera and XM. I also don't understand why Porsche doesn't have satellite radio .... are they like 3 years behind the rest of the world?

POST 15Original post

So true. But what's the fun it that? If I were any of you guys, I'll put a Mac mini/carputer with this Edited by - Crazy_fast on 03/28/2006 1:42:42 PM

POST 16Original post

hope someone does this setup soon...cuz i'm looking into either a pioneer avic D2 or avic Z1...yeah the trade in value of the car will depreciate more if you have aftermarket stereos in but you can always take the aftermarket deck out and replace it with the OEM stock stereo when you need to trade in the car...audio mods are quite different from other say engine mods...it's way easier to take them out when you're done compared to the more sophiscated mods.

POST 17Original post

Do you have any details on what the update provides? Or how one determines what "version" of the software you have?

POST 18Original post

Any more details on this Bluetooth module? Is this a Porsche item or an after-market item?

POST 19Original post

After-market by Garmin. See some info here: http://www.gpsgazette.com/garmin-nuvi-310-and-360-announced/news/
