Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Having had my 2nd PADM fault within a year, I'm interested in gauging how common this fault is. It seems really common to me (they went on my 992 too) and it's frustrating they won't replace both of them when the first one goes. Porsche GB also told me today that there is not an updated/upgraded part, so the inference is that once you've had one replaced, it could fail again. Surely this should be subject to a recall notice and upgraded parts designed..?? So, have you had a PADM fault, and if so, on what car and how many times??? I'll start - 992x1, 718 GT4x2

POST 2Original post

718 GTS x2 718 Spyder x 2 Porsche GB advised me that updated parts ARE available and agreed to fit two to my Spyder in December last year. There are other threads about this on PH as well.

POST 3Original post

surely there's something more we can do about this? i've started a formal complaint but it will be a slow process if it's just one person effectively i feel like i need to keep the warranty going (on my Cayman 981GTS) because of these mount faults. both sides have failed on mine (and as has been stated, they refused to replace both sides at the same time), and now one of the repaired sides has failed again. surely these parts are not fit for purpose? i'd like some non OEM mods on my car but i can't do this as the mounts keep failing. i've had a couple of other issues (since fixed) so for me keeping the car under warranty has paid for itself, but only because of the failing mounts. if this wasn't an issue i'd stop the warranty and fit the mods i'd like

POST 4Original post

What a pain. Would seem sports chrono is best avoided, base & S cars without it a safe choice or keep warrantied. Would also seem worth avoiding torque vectoring if you don’t want to burn through rear pads at a rate of knots. I wonder what other options are best avoided?

POST 5Original post

To be fair, torque vectoring is only wearing rear pads if the car is torque vectoring. If the driver drives tidily this is unlikely to happen very often and if required, it may have solved a problem that the driver never know existed ?? As for engine mounts, they default to firm which most appear not to notice (other than the alert from the car) and I'm sure that Porsche will tire of replacing faulty units ... QED there is an obvious incentive for them to sort the problem ... if only to code out the warning ? As for modifications, I believe that Manthey are included within the extended warranty so that remains useful since most of the mods I made to my GT4 prior to the Manthey route were actually selected by Manthey in their specification. My KW 3-way Clubsport dampers were even set to Manthey's settings for the Nurburgring.

I started the other thread listed above. I complained to Porsche GB and got an extended warranty and Porsche finance refunded payments for the length of time it took them to source and fit the parts - 3 months. I was also informed that they have redesigned the mounts.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

ATM said: But no recall, thanks Porsche. Exactly. I’d like to see a recall with upgraded parts fitted. Clearly they’re not fit for purpose

POST 12Original post

Kinda mad it seems you need to have the car on finance to get a financial recourse (realise you could probably still get some kind of gesture of goodwill if not financed but likely have to jump through several more hoops)

POST 13Original post

I own outright. I see lots of bluster on here about people saying if you need to finance you can't afford it. But now look. Your finance becomes a rental which you can get refunded. Not exactly clear cut is it.

POST 14Original post

If they fail it's better just to code out the warning and forget about it if you've not go warranty. There's a guy on Planet-9 I think has mastered coding them out, but it's all a bit complicated for me. Not sure if any Indy in the UK has interogated the software to that level yet?

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Currently sat in OPC dropping the car off for its first service and PADM repair. Porsche have not made upgraded parts, service manager insists these do not exist. So the crap parts will be going on which will no doubt result in another failure and another long wait for parts as they’re doing so many of them. There’s another GT4 in today for its 3rd PADM failure. It’s really really bad service from Porsche. There should be a manufacturer recall Edited by richyd on Thursday 28th March 07:57

POST 16Original post

I wasn’t concerned, until I read this thread as I haven’t bothered with extended warranty these last two years. 718CS Manual Sports Chrono.

POST 17Original post

Perhaps a sticky thread where people can vote agains their model and whether or not they have had a failure would be a good use of the forums abilities. (There seems be more GT4 cars suffering, or just more GT4 owners reporting it)

I have it in writing from Porsche GB that revised parts are available and have been fitted to my car. I doubt that they would put in writing something that isn’t true !! Hopefully me posting this isn't the kiss of death... My simple 2012 981 Boxster S PDK with SC its on its original mounts. I have had the car since 2015 ish. 45000 miles currently. Generally just use it as a Daily Driver inner city type driving. Sad to say - always in Normal mode. Never use Sport Plus and only use Sport mode maybe 10% of the time. When does the PADM do its thing - assuming its in Sport and Sport Plus modes only?

Normal/Sport/Performance are the three PADM modes. Normal in Normal > Performance in Sport+

richyd said: I don’t think a 2012 car has active engine mounts Can you expand when PASM was rolled out in the 981 please? I've a 2013 registered 981 Boxster S (built on December 14, 2012) with option 475 "PASM" & option 640 "Sports Chrono package plus" and option 140 "DYNAMIC ENGINE MOUNTS (PADM)" (so I assume I have PADM) and I'm not aware of any issues with them or them having been replaced. richyd said: Can you post up a picture of the note? It would be really helpful as I can share this with OPC Tonbridge. Thanks Mine was done a couple weeks ago at Porsche Tonbridge. Although it had failed on just the one side, when I booked it in they told me Porsche GB had agreed to do both sides. But... when I dropped it off, they suddenly changed their tune, citing Porsche GB would only authorise the failed side to be replaced under warranty, and instead offered me £300 goodwill against the £1500 it would cost to replace the side not broken. Given my car is under warranty I declined. My view is: 1. Porsche GB don't want to spend money on something until they have to. 2. OPC's get paid by Porsche GB for warranty work, so if when the other side goes, Tonbridge will get paid for that one also. So it's double-bubble for them.

I did see wires coming from mine. I recently changed standard mounts on my 986 and 996. They look almost identical but with no socket for a wire to connect. Dead easy to do on the 996 - 20 minutes job. On the 986 its a right pain as a lot of stuff has to be removed thats in the way. So I imagine the same on the 981. The standard mounts do age and wear out. I cant imagine why the PADM would be different. So I'd guess these will all probably need replacing at some point in the future by whoever owns these cars.

POST 31Original post

On my 2022 GT4 I’ve had 4 new PADM mounts. First error appeared at 7 months, 1,200 miles. Asked OPC to ensure the parts were in hand before I took the car in to avoid delays, the mount was but they forgot to order the bolts causing a delay. Parts fitted, road test & final plug in revealed an accelerometer error, replacement ordered and fitted. 2nd failure at 2,600 miles. Error was intermittent but would show frequently (maybe 10-20 times on a 60 minute blast). Asked OPC to have parts in hand to avoid delays, took the car in, they advised that both mounts need replacing but need to order parts! Parts arrived & fitted, PADM error appeared on test drive. The replacement was ordered and one of the new mounts replaced. To get the above info from the OPC was like pulling teeth, not once did they phone with an update. The email I finally received simply said “The car is now complete”, no polite summary of the work performed, no apology for the delay, no mention of a geo check to give you confidence that everything was done thoroughly. The moral of the story is that the PADM mounts have terrible reliability & OPC service departments are atrocious in terms of customer service.

Totally destroys your confidence in the product. They keep fitting parts that are not fit for purpose. I guess it ensures people buy an extended warranty at 3 yrs, but just crap service. My 981 GT4 had zero problems. My 718 has now had 2 warranty calls in 5k miles. 😡

This is why I'm thinking having the warranty is a bit of a no brainer given if you buy 3 years worth it works out around £650 for the year. One other question though is my car has the front grills and I'm not sure they will warranty the car with those on which seems a little silly to be given they add a layer of protection to the condensers.

Update from my OPC - Work on your GT4 is complete. I’m delighted to inform you that contrary to information I gave you when you dropped the car off I have had confirmation Porsche have updated the PADM mounts and the latest version has been fitted to your car on this visit. The original, factory fitted part number was 98137505984 and the part number we have fitted is 98137505986. I have now asked them whether the one they replaced last summer was the new part or the old part. What’s the bet it’s the old part…..?

2 replacements for me. Bought my 2013 981s 5 years ago with 26k miles, no record of them failing prior to that. The first one failed after 3 years of ownership at ~32K miles, and the other went a couple of months ago at 36K miles. I didn't really notice a difference in driving experience either time it happened. I love the concept and technology behind them, but it's overkill for my needs (I don't track), and If I didn't have a warranty, I'd probably swap them out for fixed mounts. I read that although they are sealed units, the connector is not particularly well shielded, so a few splashes of water can kill the unit. I'll check if they've used an upgraded version when I pick it up next week.

POST 51Original post

Another to add to the list...2019 Spyder with circa 8k miles. Warning light popped up a couple of weeks ago and is booked into Parr for investigation and replacement mid June. No Porsche warranty but I do have an aftermarket warranty provided by the supplying dealer with a laughably low labour rate attached to it I'm sort of hoping that both are needed to be replaced with these new versions if possible. Love the car but Porsche do seem to get a bit of an easy ride on forums regarding inherent reliability issues when compared with certain other manufacturers hence why I'm happy to add to the list here!

Had my second PADM mount on my 981 replaced this week. It appears both may have failed at the same time on a club drive last summer when I went over a ridge. I bought a replacement from my local OPC to fit myself but ended up getting my indy to fit it when they serviced the car in the autumn. They discovered both had failed but couldn't get another until a few weeks ago. The latest one is yet another modified version, part number ending in 09 compared to the one I bought last summer ending in 08. Design 911's website suggests this is the 5th revision for the 981 since the original 04 version, though only the 04 is listed in the Porsche PET parts diagram.

Tony B2 said: Is it possible to fit them without disturbing the rear suspension? I've done this job on my 986 but never on my 981. 981 suspension pic below. Do you see that massive plate which goes across the bottom. If you remove that you are supposed to get the alignment checked. I'd say that has to come off to get to the mounts. I removed it on my 986. There is no access from above. And from the side you have the drive shaft in the way. I also removed the drive shafts on my 986 but that's not really necessary if just doing mounts. I'm not 100% but I think the mounts attach to those c shaped sections towards the top of this pic. So the mounts sit above or on top of those. Therefore those side members are supporting the mount and therefore the whole assembly. There was a recall to replace those on some 981 as a manufacturing fault had some cracking and then failing. Obviously that's a disaster if traveling at speed. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/145689045607

I know someone said the "fail firm" thing is an Internet myth, but I highly doubt Porsche would leave them run asymmetrically if some had failed. I suspect if one or more PADM sensor fails, they'll all be set to the failed value - it's just common sense. And if they don't then we can assume that PADM makes sod all difference and is just a gimmick, but I doubt that as well.

I suspect it’s a combination of the GT4 rear setup being harder on the mounts and regular track usage also being harder on the mounts which in combination sees them fail as they’ve not been designed for the duty cycle. These mounts have been binned off by the factory for 992 GT3 and GT4 RS. Which is curious why the factory decided they where not needed.

If that supplier or the design changes, the part number will change (last digit only). As such the quality of the part can also change. What you have on a 10 year old car is not the same as the crap parts getting fitted today. The mounts for the 718 GT4 are now on their 4th iteration and the quality is atrocious.

But... when I dropped it off, they suddenly changed their tune, citing Porsche GB would only authorise the failed side to be replaced under warranty, and instead offered me £300 goodwill against the £1500 it would cost to replace the side not broken. Given my car is under warranty I declined. My view is: 1. Porsche GB don't want to spend money on something until they have to. 2. OPC's get paid by Porsche GB for warranty work, so if when the other side goes, Tonbridge will get paid for that one also. So it's double-bubble for them. Got my car out yesterday for its first proper run out of the year, and bam, PADM fault. It’s going to be interesting to know which side has gone… the side they replaced last year, or the previously non-broken side Porsche refused to replace…

POST 77Original post

There's a third party fix for these now for those running without warranty. It would be good however given the fact this has been going on what must be 10yrs Porsche could actually find a manufacturer to make a part that has some longevity. My GT4 has just joined this club (4 1/2 years old, 17,000 miles). That it happens is annoying; how long it takes for the dealer to look at it (2 weeks for an appointment without a loan car and 6 weeks for an appointment with a loan car) makes it rather more so.

I'll add another 2 here for my 718GT4 which I sold last month. It was a 2020 car that I purchased in 2023 with 5K miles. I'd probably done around 300-400 miles since purchase when the first one failed. Took around a 2 weeks to get into my local OPC (Wolverhampton) who confirmed a mount needed replacing - no parts in stock in the UK. It probably took 2 months before the part arrived so back in for replacement and then as I was arriving at home they called to say they forgot to do the geo. So 3 visits to the OPC for 1 mount. Luckily I had warranty as it was around £1800 plus £500 for the geo if I hadn't. Last year (October) the car was book in for it's 4 year service and now at around 7500 miles it failed while on the ramp apparently.... So again, had to order the mount, but this time I ensured they did the geo before collection.

POST 84Original post

Porsche East London, to their credit, were efficient with my car. It was the left mount that had failed and they had ordered the part when I made the booking. The car was ready for collection 25 hours after it was dropped off

POST 85Original post

Mine went earlier this year, 991.2 RS. Booked it into Chester, 3 week wait and on the day I took it in I dropped it off at 10am and it was done by 5pm. I’m sure it’s been mentioned but they “‘fail safe” so it’s fine to drive the car (as stated by the dash message) and as it defaults to the “hard” mode then even tracking it won’t be an issue.

I dont know why UK buyers are putting up with this PADM failure nonsense from Porsche UK dealers. If I bought a new car or approved used car with PADM and the PADM failed within 6 years of my purchase I would argue that the fault was present at time of manufacture/delivery as there is ample evidence that PADM mounts have been constantly failing and to such an extent that there are backlogs on replacements ( plus third party work arounds to code out the failures).

This was probably the biggest what-if that people used to raise on the Facebook sites. Especially when people asked if it was worth the extended warranty. It was one reason why I sold mine before it got too old. Now the cars are just that bit older it’s actually quite pleasing to see that there is a longer term solution that won’t mortify a later owner with a smaller wallet.
