The Escort 8500 x50 manual says that some windshields (notably Porsches) have a special coating on the inside of the windshield that can be permanently scarred by using the suction cup mounting bracket (basically, it may leave marks on you windshield that you can't remove). Does anyone know if this is an issue for our Caymans? I'm suspecting that it is not, but I couldn't find a definitive answer after searching the forums.
Thanks!
I wanted to give this a bump. It seemed to meto be availd question. The instruction manual clearly givesa warning and mentions Porsche in particular. Anybodyhave two permanent little circles on their windshield?
Alan,
I've been using my V1 on my turbo for at least three years, and haven't had any trouble washing the cup marks off the inside - I haven't put it into the Cayman yet, but I will in a week or so when I drive back up to the Bay Area for the next GGR autocross in Alameda. Are you planning to be there on the 22nd?
I'm not sure if the cups are the same between the Escort and the V1, I would guess so... and maybe they've changed the coating on the glass in the newer cars - I just don't know.

I have had my V1 for several months and when I removed the cups I had no problem cleaning the glass. I would have to believe if it was an issue Valentine would have included it in his manual as well. Perhaps the Escort uses a different ttpe of rubber?
Russ
Thanks for the replies. The Escort uses what looks like pretty standard clear suction cups. I suppose Porsche and some other companies may have at one time used some type coating on the interior of the glass, maybe a tint, particularly on the upper portion of the windshield.
My V-1 use black cups, just thought I would mention that. Don't know it that makes any difference.

Thanks for all the replies. I spoke with my salesman, Larry Kushner, at Carlson Porsche in Redwood City about this issue and he said that it should not be a problem. He said that many of his coworkers use radar detectors and have no issues with marring their windshields. Given this info and the above responses, it seems very probable that there is no problem. It would, however be nice to get a 'definitive' answer. Anyone out there actually have an Escort x50, stick it on the windshield of their Cayman, and leave no permanent marks? . . . Anyone? . . . Bueller? . . . Ferris Bueller?
P.S.
Brad,
Yes, I'll be at Alameda on 4/22 and I'm looking forward to seeing your new Cayman.
Alan28 - I have an Escort 8500 X-50 (blue display). It is mounted with clear suction cups low on the windshield so that the back end of the unit rests on the dash. I haven't removed the suction cups yet to see if there is a permanent mark. However, every once in a while, I check from outside the windshield to see if there are no marks. My biggest concern, is that the sun will melt the plasticsuction cups, but so far so good. What I like about the unit is that you can unclip it from the windshield, and because the power cable is connected in the port underneath the passanger side left, I leave it plugged on on the floor. I put a sunscreen over the dash and I'm good to go. I'll get back to you if I see any marks. So far, no problem.
