Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'on the drivers side' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'on the drivers side' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Install on the later cars' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I bought a pair of Ultimate Cupholders to use, They are at floor level.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Got myself into a bit of a quagmire....
I bought a nice upper console trim (horseshoe) for my 996.1. What I didn't realize until I went to install it is that my car has a 3-piece trim and the one I bought is for the 1-piece design. So... I had to buy the vent and frame and complete the project to make it fit. But... I just realized I'll have a gap if I don't also install the cup holder. Not happy about having to spend all this additional $, but since I no longer had a cup holder after my GT3 console delete mod, I guess it's not terrible.
Questions are:
1) I see there are two designs for the slim cup holder installed on the later cars... one holds 1 cup and the other holds 2 cups. I'm naturally inclined to get the 2-cup holder version, but it looks kind of flimsy in pics. Is one of these cup holders better than the other? I do notice that the trim piece is a common failure point on either one.
2) Does anyone have one to sell that doesn't want a million bucks for it?
EDIT: I'm confused though. I just realized that the second pic has a old style 3 piece trim with the newer style cup holder. It has the old style ac vent which is integrated into the radio fram, which theoretically was the incongruent piece between the two setups. Am I missing something? I see it's a custom double din setup. Maybe that's the difference?
Here are the two different versions I am speaking of...
Both of those images are of the same cup holder -- you pop it out of the dash to get the first cup holder, and then can slide it out further to reveal the second cup holder. While it looks flimsy, it works surprisingly well. Doug shows it in action here:

And per your EDIT question -- I think you're correct in that it looks like that aftermarket radio trim piece sits lower, giving space for the cup holder.
My 02 C2 has the dual cupholders. I don't trust them to hold a Dixie cup. They seem very flimsy and feel like they are going to break when sliding out and back in.
I should adopt Lady Sliver's policy. A friend of mine was in the passenger seat and just had to bring his can of Pepsi. He put it on the floor and it rolled under the seat. I heard a strange sound like air leaking on his side and asked him to check. The can rolled right into the seat rail and punctured a hole in it. A quick stop on the side of the road allowed time to get the can out of there before there was too much of a mess.
Now if only he had used the cupholders....
Ditto, don't ever put a cup in whatever you end up there. The cup will spill, guaranteed, and the liquid will fall all over the electronics. I bought a pair of Ultimate Cupholders to use, They are at floor level. And deep enough to hold any cups or mug.

I have these AND a triptronic. Work great. The only issue is on the drivers side. If I have a tall cup it can interfere with my leg (well, just touch my leg and annoy me more than anything else). I (and the wife) really like them and they work well.
The tall part of the holder should just tuck under the center console side. At least that's what I did with both of mine. Works great, and I have had a pretty large metal coffee cup, full, in mine on a nice Sunday morning drive (a very BRISK drive). No issues with staying put.
thank you for posting these pictures. I wasnt tucking it under that part before, but rather the plastic consol piece. Now that i switched it to the area in your picture it seems to be fitting a lot nicer
tonight was the black foam DIY night. Dear god
