Suggestion
That shop gave me a quote on replacing the AC compressor in the Cayenne which I thought seemed a little high.

Suggestion
- The second shop quoted $2,400 in labor for everything, but refused to install an LN IMS Retro (said he's had bad experience) and would only do the work if I used the RND Roller Bearing
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a friend who is planning to replace the IMS and RMS on his 2003 996. This will be done by an independent shop not yet identified. He has asked my guess as to cost (clutch not needed at this time, 30K on car). I've done my usual searches on this forum and others, but have generally come up dry.
Can some folks give me an idea of what this has cost in recent times. This might be a useful bit of info for others as well.
Thanks.
I just did my 03 30K mi. Myself. Even though my clutch, flywheel, pressure plate and throw out bearing looked ok, I decided to replace them. I got the Sachs clutch kit and flywheel for $900 at Rock Auto.
I used the the LN Solution which I got on sale for $1529, and $30 for a new factory RMS. You will also need new flywheel and clutch bolts.
I didn’t really want to do the job myself, until most of the quotes I received for the above work were $5-6K. So figure labor costs $2500-3500.
Depends what you go with (retro or solution) and who you go with. Mine, that included clutch, OEM AOS, and some other things was around $3,500 installed.
Thanks for your replies. The informal quotes he was getting were around $2000 labor plus parts, which struck me as not too surprising. So, under 3 grand for job depending on which solution. As I understand the process, replacing clutch is essentially a parts only addition.
Correct, clutch is parts only as the trans needs to be dropped. Same with others like AOS, so people opt for new OEM or Skip's UAOS while they're in there.
I was quoted $6,800 for the LN Engineering solution through an Indy in San Diego. Seemed quite high for a place that was not one of the certified installers. Im still looking around and even considering DIY.
About $4300 for LN IMS, Clutch, Flywheel, AOS and a few other odds and ends for me. I want to say the itemized listing said the IMS was around $2000 but its been a few years.
I'm in a real pickle with a similar situation.
I recently spent about $4k in parts (UOAS, LN IMS Retro, Clutch & Flywheel kit).
- The first shop I spoke too has no time.
- The second shop quoted $2,400 in labor for everything, but refused to install an LN IMS Retro (said he's had bad experience) and would only do the work if I used the RND Roller Bearing
- The third shop is a certified installer for LN and will upgrade me to the solution, but wants $4k+ in labor for the work.
I posted before about doing this myself but I'm so paranoid about making a mistake. Interesting to hear the range of prices that people paid here.
Encourage your friend to go with the solution and and just address that clutch - drain his wallet nice and dry - and then he won't have to worry about splitting the trans from the case for a long, long time.
Got it, thanks. That shop gave me a quote on replacing the AC compressor in the Cayenne which I thought seemed a little high. I didn't think much of it at the time because other than wheel alignments, I haven't had a car at a shop in over 20 years and just figured I'm out of touch.
Did you by any chance check with
Vllig Autowerks in Miramar? They're a newer shop but the owner has been active in the local PCA chapter forever and knows his stuff from what I hear.

So there is a bit of variance on this job because not all things are equal from 5 chain to 3 chain engines, and from 6 speed or tiptronic.
If you have a six speed, all the above can be done with removing only the gear box. If your friend has a Tipt, the whole shebang has to come out engine / gearbox, split up, and then updates done on the ground. That would cost more, obviously.
As for the LNE vs the RND Roller Bearing. RND bearings are manufactured by LN Engineering. Go figure that. I can see why the shop prefers the RND for a 2003 install because the LNE bearing for the 2003 version NEEDS a special tool to load up the bearing retainer clip, while the RND design has a simple circlip. Much easier and faster and simpler and and and. You can buy RND products directly from the LNE website, and it comes with a sticker just like the LNE bearing ... well because it is manufactured by LNE.
If I had to charge for this job, with a 6 speed, $2,000 labor plus parts (another $2,500 easy). If it is a Tipt, add $500.
And for quality and reliability of the RND bearings, if you treat it like a maintenance item that it is and change it every 5-7 years (or 50K miles), you will not have any problem. Who cares then?
Totally agree if you pay mega dollars for only one mode of failure. Why not save and pay more and address other many major modes of failure. . Such as rod bearings. Fit Nickie liners. Chains and tensioners, the list goes on.
