Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So I bottomed out on the the crappy streets of San Francisco. A day later a pool of oil appeared under the far rear of the car. Upon further inspection, the oil is clearly coming from the seam between the sump cover and the bottom of the engine - I can see it seeping out there. Could the blow have broken the seal between the two surfaces? I plan to take off the cover and inspect it. Any tips/ideas before I dig into this ? I would hate to take off the cover, not notice a hairline crack, seal it, fill it with oil and still have a leak. TIA

POST 2Original post

You could clean the area completely with brake cleaner (carefully) and watch for the exact spot it begins to seep through?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes, that is exactly what I did. It is coming from about an inch-wide portion of the seam between the engine and the sump cover. My fingers are crossed that it is just the seal between the two that is broken and that there is no damage to the the surface on the engine side. I guess I wont really know until I take the sump cover off.
