The big one was fixing the nonfunctional spoiler and replacing a window regulator.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So just in time for our first snow of the year my new Rainforest Green 2001 Coupe got here. Its got 140k on the clock but had the engine and trans overhauled with a new LSD installed 10k ago. Pretty basic, m6 black interior. But Im thrilled. I looked around my garage and felt I had too many cars that did the same thing. So I sold one of my hot rods and bought this. It will be nice to have overdrive and AC.

POST 2Original post

Sweet! Welcome. Love that the engine and trans and LSD are newer. Sounds like its got another 140k left in her.

POST 5Original post

Great buy! with the Bonus Ambers to boot! Enjoy her, beautiful color.

Tell me about it. I was rushing all week to get a bunch of work done on my 1943 MB so I could get it out of the way for the 911. I had to move it out to the barn until spring. You always need more space. And thanks guys. The weather is supposed to be better tomorrow, so Im hoping to take it for a ride. I looked really hard to find a car in a bit of an exotic color. No offense to the silver guys, but I just really didnt want a silver one. I was trying to find production paint numbers. I couldnt find anything solid, but it seems like the rainforest green was a pretty low production color. It does have some tasteful mods. I think the exhaust is stock, being from California. It has an intake, a deep sump pan, a GT3 center rad, IMS upgrade, and a 997 GT3 shifter. It also has a 160* thermostat, which seems odd for a modern car. Most newer cars run up near 200. A few other things Im sure I didnt notice in the paperwork. The wheels I was told are 40th Anniversary wheels.

If we were talking about any number of American cars from 1950 to 1990 I would be in the know, but Im a super newbie here. Bonus ambers?

POST 9Original post

I like the finish on the wheels, too. Sets off the green nicely.

POST 10Original post

Congrats and welcome to the "Rainforest Green" club I get folks coming up to me in parking lots all the time commenting about how much they like the color.

That is my 1967 Pontiac Firebird. I put that one back together from an absolute shell. 400 based stroker at 462 cubic inches. Made just short of 600 HP on the engine dyno. In the background is my super ugly Drag Week project. Its. 1952 Chevrolet with a straight axle being set up for a BBC.

Congrats! I was just looking at this car online. Enjoy the hell out of it.

POST 13Original post

Sorry, Ambers are the early fried egg yellow at the bottom of the headlights. If they are 911 and not boxster headlights they are pretty rare. Your rear tail lights are stock they didn't swap those out. Some advice. Having bought he best 911 first, you will inevetiably think the 997 is better (cause it's never) or be sucked in by the air cooled looks....resist temptation and never sell this one. You've got the best model.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That actually makes some sense. I bought it from a boutique dealer on consignment. In their inspection there was a place that said “tail lights clear. Should be amber”. I assumed they just meant a bulb. So now that you say that they are mismatched front to back I get it. they had a list of items wrong that they were going to lean on the owner for. I let some small stuff like that go. The big one was fixing the nonfunctional spoiler and replacing a window regulator. I could have afforded a higher mileage or less documented 997.1, but I really narrowed my searches to cars that had lots of documentation and or recent overhauls to major systems. I passed up a 996.2 targa with lower miles and cheaper because they just had no paperwork on it. Along with being the one I could afford, the 996 just seemed like the drivers 911 to me. Plus, not being a long term 911 guy the headlights didn’t bother me.

POST 15Original post

Great color combo especially contrast wheel color drive the crap out of it

POST 16Original post

Beauty car right there, love that color. All in all, well played!

POST 17Original post

Congrats. Welcome to the 996 club. Beautiful!

POST 18Original post

The 160 degree thermostats were all the rage in the 996 forums 5-10 years ago. It was thought to help reduce bore scoring. The logic is that keeping lower coolant temps with spirited driving or track driving will keep the oil temps in check, which in turn will help prevent the oil film from getting so thin in some critical places. But most 996 owners experience hotter temps while stuck in traffic due to lack of airflow across the front radiators. In which case the low temp thermostat has some benefit if traffic is only bad for a short time. Not going to work in Chicago, lol. There are other claimed benefits as well due to the location of the thermostat compared to how long it takes for that thermostat to respond to a sudden change in temp. Oh, and one last thing. The 160 degree thermostats can progressively open, as opposed to a stock one that is more of an on/off switch, so that reduces shock and prevents a sudden rapid increase in engine temps. All in all, the quality of the LN thermostat is probably worth the upgrade for those having any sort of temperature issues, but I would only get that upgrade if I was already in there replacing the water pump or coolant, or upgrading or rebuilding the engine.

POST 20 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This one has a GT3 center radiator. I wonder how much that helps with any cooling issues. It also had its side radiators replaced. its all greek to me. Im used to a car having one radiator lol.
