Suggestion

I recommend fixing it as cheaply as possible, holding on to it until there is about 6 months left on the warranty (at least you can get some worry-free enjoyment out of it) and then dump it to someone with 6 months of warranty left.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm selling my glacier white 1999 996. It has around 94,000 miles on the car, but only 2000 on the new motor. The motor is from Sunset Imports Dealership, which helps over on Rennlist, with a 2 year warranty (21 months still remaining). The new motor comes with new accessories like alternator, starter, water pump, and power steering pump. While the engine was out the radiators were pulled and cleaned, new receiver/dryer and freon charge for the ac, and a new battery last week. It has a very nice leather interior, but the steering wheel does show some wear. It is a tiptronic that works great. The transmission fluid level was checked while the engine was out. New brakes were put on at the 90,000 mile service. It has Kinesis K19 wheels that are 19x8.5 up front and 19x11 in the rear. The tires are 235/35 Pirelli P-Zero's (about 50% wear) in the front and the rears 285/35 Falken 452's (brand new). There is a small ding on the rear passenger wheel well and the rear bumper has been resprayed. Overall the car looks and handles great. Ready to be driven anywhere. I'm 2 hours from LA. $29,000

POST 2Original post

Love the color...one of my faviorites....the new motor will certainly help with the sale, but even with the new engine, you might have a bit of a wait with an asking price of $29K. The issue will not be the motor, but will be the 94,000K miles, some interior condition; and the fact it's a tiptronic. Even so....I wish you the best of luck in your sale.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I appreciate the replies. I realize that one never gets the money invested into a car back when selling it, but is my asking price too high? I usually follow the Porsche market; what would you guys offer it at? Thanks

POST 5Original post

I'm only basing my answer on a personal opinion of what sort of price I'd be looking for if I were seriously intereted in your car....I'd probably offer somewhere in the vicinity of $25K. Again....this is based upon the mileage....but you do have the bargaining power of the new engine in there which....if folks have done any research.....is a comforting factor.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I do appreciate the board's comments. However considering my new FACTORY engine with 2 yr warranty, Kinesis 19" wheels, and new items (starter, power steering pump, water pump, belt, headers, alternator, battery, a/c receiver/dryer and charge, brakes all around, and rear tires) I think my asking price is pretty fair. Thanks for the inputs.

POST 7Original post

KENT: I sense a bit of disappointment in the responses you've received from the feedback. I can understand your sense of disappointment and that you have put a lot of your hard earned money and time into making this car a personalized statement of what you feel a Porsche should be. But the fact remains that regardless of how much time, effort, or money you put into it....it will only bring back what the market dictates.....and right now, the market is not kind to us Porsche folks....unless you're buying. I wish you all the luck in the world and sincerely hope you get your price....but again, regardless of the new engine....the mileage and tip are going to be your biggest speed bumps. The big plus is the new engine with an existing warranty. This forum admittedly has a tendency to undervalue cars....but if you look (and Im sure you have) at the 99 996 market, there are just a whole lot of them out there looking for new homes that have been sitting around for a long time....with "price reduced" bumps to the threads. That's the stark reality of the current situation.

POST 8Original post

From my own experience, I sold my 01 a year ago. I spent 1yr trying to sell it for what I thought was a "fair price". My original asking price was $35K, I ended up selling it for $30K. only 76K miles and 19" speedline wheels. Not trying to say your car shouldn't sell for your asking price, but don't be surprised if it doesn't.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys, I do appreciate other owners comments. It's definately a buyers market now for the 996's. I'm not saying I'm completely inflexible in my asking price, but I won't drop it a lot. Worse case: I enjoy driving it some more. Thanks again.

POST 10Original post

Kent: Here's an extract from another discussion where the fellow is in the same positon you are...His is a 99 996 in great interior shape, and with 91K miles....but blew the engine and was asking about fixing it versus selling it sans motor...The response is sort of what I thought when I threw out the $25K. ......"Strasse Auto also did my motor. He is very knowledgable and I was happy with the work and warranty, but the sting never goes away. My guess is you can pay him $6500 and sell the car for $20K or pay Porsche $11K and sell the car for $24K with the 2 year warranty. Either way, it works about the same for you in the end. I recommend fixing it as cheaply as possible, holding on to it until there is about 6 months left on the warranty (at least you can get some worry-free enjoyment out of it) and then dump it to someone with 6 months of warranty left. It may never fail again, who knows?...." I sincerely hope you find the right buyer for what looks like a great car. Chuck
