Suggestion

If you pull the filter, it needs to be replaced with a new one, preferably a Wix/NAPA Gold 57211, which is a Hell of a lot better made, and cheaper:

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

During my last oil change, I found some suspicious fiber like material in my filter canister. Changed the oil and filter and now want to revisit the filter to see is any more has deposited in the canister. Is it possible to remove the filter/canister without draining all 9 quarts? Does anyone have experience doing this? I can do a complete oil change but would prefer to only replace the quart that I may lose if I pull the filter.

POST 2Original post

yes, simply remove the filter and only the oil in the filter will drain out you don't need to drain the entire oil. I did this when my oil was overfilled and I needed to pull out 1/2 quart.

POST 3Original post

It is probably the crappy OEM filter falling apart, not uncommon. If you pull the filter, it needs to be replaced with a new one, preferably a Wix/NAPA Gold 57211, which is a Hell of a lot better made, and cheaper:
