I want to start working on my '99 996 C4 which I bought a year ago. I think I can change oil and filter but don't know if I can replace spark plugs. I located the spark plugs behind the muffler and a head shield. But it seems that I would be working in a very tight space. Does anyone know what it takes to replace the spark plugs? (The local Porsche dealer told me it costs around $300-400 which seems a bit high.) Appreciate any information.

Do you know any circus midgets that could help you? Using different length extensions and socket u-joint connectors it can be done. You just have to be patient with the rearmost 2. I've found that backing the car up on ramps (unless you have a lift) can help when you're contorting. It's a pain, but definately doable.

Thanks for sharing your experience I surfed around and found a picture of spark plug connector which is like several inches long. It seems like you can't pull that out in the given space but did yours had the same long connector?

You will need the spark plug connector/wrench to loosen the plug, but you are correct about not having enough room to pull that out with the plug still connected. I got the plug free then pulled out the wrench and finally got the spark plug out seperately. It's a nuisance, but just take your time. Since you go to all this effort, make sure you put in good plugs.
