On an interesting side note between '03-'04 the silver accents in the interior changed from a flat silver to a metallic one.

those back torx felt covered screws are a BEATCH to get, even with a short bit and using a box end wrench to turn.

Suggestion

The other way I see using your old tumbler, is to get the "lever only" then bust the aluminum tabs of the old lever that retains the tumbler, it pushes out the front I'm guessing.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Don't let this post and my post about my driver's seat fool you, I am in love with my 996. The trouble I'm having with the glove box handle is simple: it keeps falling off! I've done some searching and have not found a solution or a replacement. Does anyone have suggested places to look or general advice? Thank you in advance!

Bumping this, because the handle is just staring at me from the compartment between the hvac and the radio!

Without seeing a photo of your problem. 'Falling off' doesn't mean anything. I can say glue or bolts and screws or both but that's no good without seeing your problem close up. Maybe then me or someone else could come up with a good suggestion to secure what ever you are trying to stop 'falling off'.

POST 4Original post

I just did a quick search. There is a thread on Renntech.org about replacing it and with a parts diagram. I can't get my iPad to paste the link here. Looks like you remove 5 screws holding the glovebox door liner in place then there 3 more on each side. Then there are 2 screws holding the latch in place. Appears to be a part you can buy: 996 552 350 01. I see it for sale at multiple vendors. I bet Jason at Warehouse33auto.com (Rennlist sponsor) can get it for you right away as cheaply as anyone.

POST 5Original post

Mine was broken like yours right after I bought it. My wife pulled/broke it off the first time she opened the glovebox. Buy the replacement latch Assy. Teach your passenger to gently unlatch the lock and let the door fall open.

POST 6Original post

Can someone clarify how to rekey? 03 996, fat finder passenger pulled loose my handle, one of the pivot point hinges toast. So I bought the whole new assy. Many prior forum posts clearly show and describe removing the felt head screws and getting the latch mechanism swapped out. But, how do you swap over the old key Tumber? My new unit has the key tumbler installed and I can't figure out how to remove it. Do you have to break tabs on the old latch to get the old tumbler out? then how to install in new handle? I hear you need to do it with the key inserted or tumbler pins/parts go shooting everywhere...... THX.

POST 7Original post

I don't see the point in having a glove box in the 996 or any other car for that matter. When have any of you seen a pair of gloves inside a glove box? I see everything else in there except gloves. Glasses and dried up pens that never seem to write as they have been in there for ages seem to be the favourite items. The 996 already has three closeable storage units without having a fourth one people like to refer to as 'the glove box'. The 'S H I T box' would be a better name for it lol.

Yes, the key will hold the pins in place. Most glove box lock pins are spring loaded. I cant talk for the 996 but it usually involves inserting the key then twisting the barrel in a certain direction which will release it from the latch. On an interesting side note between '03-'04 the silver accents in the interior changed from a flat silver to a metallic one. This can be distinguished by the part number ending in V01 or V03... Ask me how I know haha!

POST 9Original post

Surgery was a success. my puzzlement is that you can order two part numbers, one is "handle only" the other is complete assy (which is only like $15 more, and includes the tumbler) At first I thought the new tumbler was keyed differently, but after shooting some lube in it she turned. I'm sure it's a universal fit lock? The other way I see using your old tumbler, is to get the "lever only" then bust the aluminum tabs of the old lever that retains the tumbler, it pushes out the front I'm guessing. Then you press it into the new lever, and must be retained by those clips you busted out on the old one. those back torx felt covered screws are a BEATCH to get, even with a short bit and using a box end wrench to turn. patience!

From memory the glove box lock is ordered by VIN number to match your keyset
