Ultimately I'm loving my Boxster S, and having owned the Spyder for over 3 years, it was the longest I've kept any car.

And at the Boxster and Cayman price point throwing carbon fiber and exotic materials at that problem is unlikely to be feasible.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

996GT3RS is very much a now iconic halo car, sold in lower numbers than the Spyder and yet, 10 years down the line, has still not got back up to its original sale price.
A few US dealers are blabbing and indicating orders can be placed on Thursday the 20th, despite the fact that the embargo doesn't lift until Wednesday the 19th. My own won't comment on it, but has indicated that they'll call me no later than Thursday (presumably so I can place my order -- I secured my place in line in September).
Mind you, Porsche rolled over the "model year" (at least in the US) on Monday, March 10th to 2015. The GTS is expected to officially debut in the metal next month at the Beijing Auto Show.
So yes, a Cayman with a slightly better P/W ratio than a base 991 911 Carrera. This is *not* meant to be the successor to the Boxster Spyder/Cayman R. That's separate, and I can't comment on it at the moment.

Can't. Porsche has too many powertrain mules for it to be completely obvious at this point. I assume that the initial info is correct, but with all the powertrain mules in play I can't be certain just yet.
Regardless, US dealers are still blabbing about the GTS dropping this week. Porsche again did configurator maintenance last night (presumably updates for new models), so it's all but certain. Besides, the original leak was correct in every detail on the Macan and 911 Targa, which is when the Boxster/Cayman GTS was leaked.

I guess we will have to be patient then.

I don't think many people are asking about the GTS info, that will be out soon enough, we all want to know what Porsche plans are for a new R
This.
Will make a difference as to whether I keep the Spyder after July or not.
If a 981 R/Spyder come available in 6-12 months time then I may keep mine until then.
Any longer and I'll probably have moved on.
as always thought any thing tasty will be at end of 981.1 lifecycle which most likely will be a 2016 model year starting next summer or perhaps later (if it happens?)which gives the gts a year on the market place.
there is always the possibility that the gts is the runout model before the 981.2(like the cayman sport/rs60 which proceeded the 987.2) and a spyder/r could be even further away ie 4 years
mrdemon said:
has to be over 2 years away imo they won't take sales away from the GTS
18 to 24 months is correct. Think Geneva 2016. However, the GTS is not meant to compete with the R/Spyder. They are very different buyers. It's a shame. I would prefer the 981 Boxster Spyder (with carbon fiber buckets and no A/C), but I've simply grown impatient. I consider a Cayman GTS to be a very nice compromise considering I'm spec'ing it to be as hardcore as possible, though I expect the next Spyder to be a real looker.
Porsche's GTS trim level = aero changes to visually differentiate the car, power kit, and popular options standard, all for a slight discount over spec'ing an identical S. This is how it is for the 911, Panamera and Cayenne.
Spyder/R = hardcore, lightweight car that tries to offer the best classic "driver's car" on the market. The Spyder/R has no competition in the market for its price, period. 911s are still more expensive, and are already blurring the sports car/GT car line a bit. Mind you, over 50% of Spyder/R buyers worldwide paid to remove the carbon fiber seats and to add much heavier, comfortable seats. The market for these cars is quite small, but that customer base exists, so Porsche will cater to it because it allows for the highest possible transaction prices for the Boxster/Cayman.
What I can say is that with the 981 in general, we are seeing the continuation of the Spyder/R in that Porsche has finally understood how this market is segmented, and that it does not cannibalize 911 sales. The GTS is the first mid-engine car to properly step on big brother 911's toes. The Spyder/R will continue this theme, where it will be knocking on the Carrera S's door. However, be prepared for what you'll have to spend this time around, as we'll see average transaction prices to be consistently in the $90,000 - $100,000 USD range.

Apologies, don't mean to be rude but (without revealing your sources) is this anything other than speculation on your part or do you have access to information that us humble UK Spyder owners don't?
After banging around the pot holes of the Lake District this weekend, roof up due to my wife in the passenger seat and the odd bit of rain, a GTS with PASM and a proper roof is quite appealing. If a new Spyder is 2 years away I'd be all the more tempted to be honest as the rarity value of the 987 would be killed by a 981 version.
Popular wisdom over here has always been that there will be no 981.1 Spyder at all and only a remote possibility of a runout special at the end of 981.2.
"be honest as the rarity value of the 987 would be killed by a 981 version"
i doubt it as firstly if they build a new spyder they will make sure its a bigger sales success second time round unlike the 987 spyder and the mk1 version is always more sort after than a mk2 version of most specials and dont forget that electric steering

Yes. I'd also like to not have security kick me out of race tracks in the future. I've a gift for getting a few manufacturers' engineers to run their mouths.

Porsche has said from day one that the Boxster Spyder and Cayman R were not one-offs, and that they were new production models here to stay for the future.

After three and a half years with my Spyder, I was itching for a change too. Purchased a 13 plate 981 Boxster S with £12k of extras for less than the the asking price of the used Spyders currently up for sale at OPC's (did negotiate very hard and bought it in the middle of the bleakest part of winter). Prices seem to be firming up for 981's now, but currently I think the OPC Spyders just look over priced. Electric steering or not, I'm loving it. I've not regretted changing one bit.
I can believe that, I suppose much depends on how much you want to use it too - mine has done 21k miles and is 4 years old in May. If I was doing much more mileage in it I would let it go for sure, especially whilst OPCs are selling them at £46k like Cambridge just did!!
the spyder is a high price because of its unique body and rarity.of course you got a deal on a 981 as so many have been ordered by dealers and not customers so a lot of unsold stock same can be said for the 991.the gts will also be ordered/sold in volume so expect deals after 6-9 months of coming to the market which will devalue the 981s even more while the spyder remains firm
Edited by itsybitsy on Monday 17th March 23:35
If you cast your mind back over 3 years ago the OPC network couldn't give Spyders away. That's when I bought mine. They were a bargain then, but they most certainly aren't now. I loved my Spyder but there's a time when it is financially sound to move it on. When I considered the cost of a major service, warranty and 4 tyres by mid summer, it added up to £3500, which in my opinion was better spent on updating my car. I'm guessing that an exact replacement for mine would cost £58 to £60k by the middle of 2016, so I'm sure I'll achieve circa £35k when I sell at 3 years old. This means I'll have lost less than I would have if I'd bought a normal family car, for the pleasure of driving my Boxster for 30 months. Cheap motoring whichever way you look at it. Is it realistic to assume that anyone paying £42 to £44k for a near 4 year old Spyder today will lose more than me?
doubt it look at 996 GT3 RS prices now , well over 70k
rare cars made by Porsche always go up esp good ones.
when is buying new 981 and selling for circa 30k ever been cheap motoring ?
that's 8to 10k a year !
cheap motoring is 2k a year or as far as my Spyder goes making 5k if I sell it.
some people idea of cheap motoring are way off the mark lol
Edited by mrdemon on Tuesday 18th March 08:53
The point was he didn't buy a new 981, he bought a lightly used one for used Spyder money. Factor in the absence of the need for a major service, tyres and warranty extension and the argument is sound.
996GT3RS is very much a now iconic halo car, sold in lower numbers than the Spyder and yet, 10 years down the line, has still not got back up to its original sale price. I appreciate that their value will continue to soar in the opposite direction to a new 981.
At the end of the day its horses for courses and very much depends on how you want to use the car and, to some extent who with - my Mrs prefers us to go away for the weekend in the comfy BMW and would prefer to snooze on a long journey but my son would excommunicate me if I sold the Spyder!
Not sure of how you worked out the depreciation at £8 to £10k a year Mr Demon. I'm looking at a total of around £7500 for 30 months as I clearly said I bought my car very right indeed. That's good business. Fingers crossed you make £5k on yours!!
fingers crossed I make 10k on it not 5k :-)
tyres are tyres, you will need a service and new tyres on the 981 over the 3 years of owership.
buying right is key though, thought you bought new at 55k +
not sure how the figures work out to only 7.5k to run for 30 months though, is that man maths :-)
what's a new nice speced S 55k and you got one for 37k ?
any way chalk and cheese as it is like saying gt3 over normal 911.

Yeah agree - my pal runs a '98 SAAB that he paid 250 pounds for, gets Nil rate VED and apart from fuel and insurance, we reckon it cost him 75 quid last year, including the MOT test!
just to put some perspective on 981 values in the first 9 months of 2012 some 475 981BS were registered new and that does not include dealers unregistered stock so we can assume some 1000+ 981BS have arrived at our shores to date and growing whereas the spyder total was 231 also currently 72 981BS for sale on opc site(not including new stock) whereas there are only 2 spyders.
spyder values i believe will stay firm circa £35-40k which is still far short of the average £55k new price and may never climb back to its new price for a long time.
the spyder did not sell well at first but neither did a car like the 964rs!the m3csl new was £60k dropped to circa £30k now circa£45k which is more pricey than a newer more powerful m3.
just because a car is newer more powerful than the old model does not make it better!
Back to the GTS imho will be sold in large volumes with fewer if any standard S models being sold to the end of 981.1 production .if they make a 981 spyder porsche will hope it sells in excess of 5000 (like the caymanR did)as the 987spyder was a sales disaster to present and future owners advantage.

They are both fabulous cars in their own way. I just can't believe that my old car hasn't been snapped up yet at 911 Virgin. This comment should raise the buckets debate again, as there's just not been enough Spyder postings lately on here!!!! lol

spec is key the older the car gets, 911 Virgin made a error buying that car imo even though it was cheap.
Yeah, the rarer a car gets, the more important it's spec is :?
I have to disagree with itsybitsy. I think they got it spot on with the 981 especially the Cayman which I think is a better looking car than the 991. My first driving impression of the 991 when I had one for the day last year when my Spyder was in for service was that it was too big. I felt the same when I first drove a 928 MANY years ago. That was a car I lusted after until I drove it. The 991 is now more GT than sports car I think. I certainly don't lust after one - probably just as well as I couldn't afford a new one anyway - now being retired. A 981 Spyder though could still be on the agenda if and when.
We all like different things though - luckily!!!

Why is it nil VED? Should be £225 p.a.

It’s a big step up from the 986/987. The Boxster is OK, but rather forgettable. Though the Spyder will change that in a big way. The Cayman, however, is “Ferrari Dino pretty”. That’s to say it’s not “beautiful” but it’s handsome and will age as well as the Dino has (which to say, is rather well). Ditching the 911 doors allowed the designers to make something good looking.
itsybitsy said:

The take rate on the carbon fiber buckets is a lot less than you’d think. More than 1/2 of all Spyders and Rs had “normal” seats added back in at extra cost. I’m in the US. We may never see those seats again. Even the GT3 over here doesn’t have them, which upsets me as I really want them.
A Boston Porsche dealer couldn’t move a Cayman R for 18 months before it sold. Why? Carbon fiber buckets and no A/C as it was standard.
itsybitsy said:

This matches the original leaked embargo lift date of March 19th to a T. Looks like I’ll be at my dealer Friday afternoon getting my order going.
- - - - -
As an aside, there’s some *real* man math going on in this thread. I wish I had the cash to burn to buy a new car every 3 years. I do, but only at the expense of far too many other things. Christ. I’m putting ~70% down on my Cayman GTS. It’ll be paid off before next Christmas. The only thing I’d ever consider a trade up to is the successor to a McLaren 650S if I started making a million US $/year over what I make now. That's like doing Mazda MX-5 to Cayman GTS again (doubling HP and torque, much better handling).
Just downloaded the new Autocar - shows what we already know about both GTS's (extra bhp, different front and rear bumpers, on sale in May).
The only other Porsche related news was about new V6 and V8 engines going in a new platform - possibly a two door Panny.
Nothing about a Spyder or CR.
Bugger.

that will be NO AC
goto rennlist every one wants buckets as you also do.
the R did not sell because it did not have AC

Betcha.
this imo
you can add buckets and the Sports 20mm lower chassie to a GTS
what could a R bring to the party now ? bar 350BHp but then that is entry level 911 bhp and that would have to way after the 991 face lift so the 991 gets more bhp.
It's very tempting to have a GTS with buckets and sports chassie in manual.
Why build an R? What would be the difference? A little bit more aluminium over steel and some of those pathetic little door pulls? It will not happen for a few years (if ever).

It's very tempting to have a GTS with buckets and sports chassie in manual.
but i thought you didnt like the steering so how can it suddenly be tempting.also the caymanR is still 50kg lighter although it has 10hp less.so over £25k to change R to GTS for no real gain.
what i want to know is what have they done to get the extra torque.
a low mileage CR or GTS no contest

... steering difference: agree.
... but on the weight differential, if the 987 R has A/C and you specify the GTS with carbon bucket seats there is about 2kg difference between the two cars. So with the power bump and apples to apples weight comparison there is literally nothing in it.
I believe the biggest differences are 1) price, 2) age / newness and 3) visual differences between the two. Oh and the elephant in the room already mentioned 4) electric steering. (I suppose you could add 5) CO2, mpg.)
There seems to be about GBP3k of visual options (carbon trim, smoked lenses etc) pushing the price up. Shame as I would have preferred just the power boost with the chassis options.

tempting in a shiny new kind of way and knowing you have the Cayman with the most BHP ;-) and I do need xenons in my life.
While the steering is electric, it's better than the 911 and Boxster, I wonder if they might have tweeked it more for the GTS ?
I feel my time with the Spyder is coming to an end owning the R I don't use the Spdyer much.
As already said AC in the R offsets the weight and adding back buckets to the GTS makes them about the same weight.

Looks good but not that impressed, Porsche will still probably bring out an R version at some point. If I owned a Spyder or CR I would still be a happy chap.
Seems neat and well spec-ed with sports seats plus/sports wheel and all the other bits although a shame that the diff is optional.
Is the launch colour trying to be Amaranth or Guards or a composite of both...?
If you can be bothered to read all the blurb (and I can't say I managed all of it), many of the fancy looking features of the car in the photos are optional extras - such as the fancy interior.
I quite like the idea but suspect it would take a £10k hit the moment you drive it out of the showroom.

Looks like Arena red in the pics.
Lovely colour with platinum wheels.
I'm sold - where do I sign?
it was a Cayenne GTS colour, carmine red.
Love it
Boxster GTS is about £6500 more than Boxster S but has the following additional equipment:
PDLS
20" alloys
PASM
PSE
Sport Chrono
Smoke rear lights
These options would normally cost around £5500
More power and more torque
new front (IMO, looks fantastic and dramatically improves the Boxster's stance and masculinity) and rear bumpers
My build starts next Monday and will look similar to a GTS with the same wheels and smoked tail lights. I do like the GTS bumpers.
I've read a couple of the press releases but would like the GTS configurator to be live to compare costs with an S. As above, lots of the stuff in the pictures appears to be optional and the cost of the options is still an unknown.

I'd prefer to wait for an R. I suspect that it will got a lot more hardcore but that the price will be more than a little scary! I was told to imagine mine but with 380BHP!!!
Spoke too soon. The Configurator just went live but now its gone again. The GTS alcantara interior package is over two grand.
I specced one imilar to mine and it went just over £70K. Just a few minor differences like no embossed headrests, GTS embroidered instead, no alloy footrest, etc.
I wish I could find it again.

its hidden.go in to the s model then go back to models and its there!!!
my spec~
boxster gts £61.5k
cayman gts £63.5k
I think they look great and would like to think, I will upgrade to the newer model on day. However looking at the performance figures are they holding back? The new breed of hot hatches seem to have more real world performance...
full leather or leather/alcantara interior and sport design steering wheel appears to be standard, as are sports seats plus
once you add these to PSE, PASM, SP, 20", PDLS, GTS is cheaper than S.

just looked and one of the fiqures i always look at and take in to account is the 50-75mph in 5thgear.
987 spyder =6.1 secs
981 cayman gts = 6.5 secs.
to add
0-160kmh
987 spyder = 10.8 secs
981 caymanGts =10.6 secs
these are manual gearbox and porsche official times

Cheers - mine comes out at £65k!
Wow you guys have expensive tastes. I managed to spec one at £59600 and that was adding a few things I could do without.
I'm tending towards waiting to see if they do introduce an R version though.
GTS is cheaper than equivalent S once you look at GTS standard equipment which are options on S:
PASM
PSE
Sports Seats Plus
Full leather or leather/alcantara interior
Sport Chrono Package
Smoked rear lights
Sport Design Steering wheel
PDLS
20" alloys
Also it appears TPMS and wind deflector is now standard.
And of course you get the 15hp an 10NM extra.
AND the sensational front bumper which transforms the car.
It's only cheaper than an S if you want
PASM
PSE
Sports Seats Plus
Full leather or leather/alcantara interior
Sport Chrono Package
Smoked rear lights
Sport Design Steering wheel
PDLS
20" alloys
So it's more accurate to say that the options on an S that come standard on a GTS are better value when packaged up in a GTS.
The closest I can spec a GTS to my S ends up £6500 more expensive largely because I only chose 20"'s, sport design wheel, smoked rear lights from the GTS standard equipment list.

Yeah agree - my pal runs a '98 SAAB that he paid 250 pounds for, gets Nil rate VED and apart from fuel and insurance, we reckon it cost him 75 quid last year, including the MOT test!
Why is it nil VED? Should be £225 p.a.
Disability.
Looks like they took my CS and added 15hp, black tailpipes and tinted rear lenses. Not keen on the new DRL's - I like the round ones. Wouldn't mind the rear diffuser though, that looks tidy. All in all, glad I didn't wait 6 months.

not going to happen 25k more than the R which I love...
what do you really gain over the R?NOTHING but something shiney and new and £25k poorer.after 3-5 years the CR will be worth the same or even more if the gts sells in large volumes which i think it will as every new cayman/boxster will be a gts for the next 18 months to 2 years

Can those acceleration figures really be right? If so, it's a very poor show!
Maybe they are leaving plenty of room for an R with much better figures. It's wholly artificial - the chassis and engine should give better acceleration figures.
The GTS will be quicker than a Spyder and Cayman R in the basic drag tests, it will also beat a C2 Cab. Porsche under-quote the performance of the Boxster and Cayman far more than their 911 cars and have done since the Gen2 987. That's because the performance is far closer to a 991 C2 cab than average joe punter realises.
2005 987 Cayman S
Road & Track - 0-60 in 4.8 sec 1/4 Mile 13.3 @ 106.2 mph
981 Boxster S
Road & Track - 0-60 in 4.1 sec 1/4 Mile 12.6 sec @ 109.7 mph
Cayman R
Road & Track - 0-60 in 4.2 sec 1/4 Mile 12.7 sec @ 111 mph
Boxster GTS (expected)
0-60 in 4.0 sec 1/4 Mile 12.6 sec @ 111 mph
Lowest tested 0-100mph times (160kmph)
981 Boxster S - 10.5 sec
987 Cayman R - 10.2 sec
987 Boxster Spyder - 10.3 sec
Torque
987 Boxster Spyder - 273lb/ft
981 Boxster GTS - 274lb/ft

all times from offical porsche site.
in real world driving the gts will be no faster than a spyder/r especially with those slow in gear times.0-60 times have no real bearing on the road where as in gear times do.

Hmm.
When BMW went from straight sixes (and V8s!) to blown fours and blown sixes their appeal dimmed further to the point "lights out" to me. Can you imagine the lag on a 395 bhps four? Maybe Porsche can do some clever 918-style technololy to get rid of the lag problem, but then they will be introducing a weight problem instead. And at the Boxster and Cayman price point throwing carbon fiber and exotic materials at that problem is unlikely to be feasible.
Zyp said:
Flat four?
I moved on from Subarus 15 years ago...
Seriously, thank f@&k it's not an inline 4.
I still don't get why they just make the investment into a lovely small capacity flat 6. It wouldn't beyond the wit of Porsche to get the efficiency and cost to within acceptable levels and the sound and refinement would be leagues ahead.
However at least no one will be saying a Cayman has a TT engine!
mrdemon said:
I love the TT engine

I just love that turbo 5 pot
Ha - good call, yeah the 5 pot is quite special and actually the 4 pot isn't actually bad as such - but boxsters, caymans, 911s should have a bespoke range of engines given the resources of the company.
I like the TT - and Porsche could learn a thing or 2 about keeping weight down from them too...
