My records indicate it is a long while since the rear brakes were done and the car sat unused by PO for well over a year before I got it so I think sensible to replace all the hardware for a known-good clean start.

Bit of a gamble as if I find everything is fine I've just doubled the cost of the job by replacing springs/clips/dampers etc unnecessarily!

Thanks, research showed a lot of people ditching the Porsche OE dampers entirely as they are a pain and not cheap, but one or two people have either reused or run without them and said they got squeal...

So your view is there's no point leaving on the loosely attached Brembo shims if using now Porsche damping plates, using both would defeat the object and compromise both.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, I am just about to refresh by rear brakes and have gone for Brembo disks/pads/sensors and OE pins, springs, damping plates and caliper bolts. On opening the Brembo pads they have a thin metal anti-noise shim lightly clipped to the back of each pad, so I am wondering whether these should be removed before fitting, on the basis that I have got 8 x new Porsche damping plates, and I am not sure whether to stick them to the thin, removable Brembo shim hanging on the back of the pad, or remove the Brembo shim and stick the Porsche damping plates to the actual back of the pads? Anyone have any thoughts or experience please, I'd rather not waste the Porsche damping pads they are pretty dear for what they are (£100). I don't track so not bothered about swapping pads often, just ideally want non-squealing brakes. Cheers, Simon

Thanks, research showed a lot of people ditching the Porsche OE dampers entirely as they are a pain and not cheap, but one or two people have either reused or run without them and said they got squeal... Might take your advice and try with just the Brembo shims and a bit of grease first and if all good no need for the Porsche ones.

POST 4Original post

Porsche anti squeal pads pull the pad off the disc when the piston goes back into the piston. Those Brembo plates wont do that

POST 5Original post

I just reused the Porsche OEM shims, they came off very neatly with a plaster spatula. I actually separated the pads and shims while they were still in the calipers and attached to the hubs, then I didn't need to remove the calipers to remove the pads.

POST 7Original post

From looking at the OEM shims I purchased from Design911 they have 3M 468 MP double sided transfer tape on them. This looks to be readily available online 5 sheets 20 x 20 cm about £12. I think I will give this a go next time, just cut to size ?

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am tempted to try and reuse but my new parts are at the OPC to collect today, and if I get it all apart in the morning and find one of the 8 can't be reused due to corrosion or whatever, I'd then have to go and pick the parts up anyway. Bit of a gamble as if I find everything is fine I've just doubled the cost of the job by replacing springs/clips/dampers etc unnecessarily! At least I will know it's done right and will probably last 5+ years at least, and possibly be reusable next time.

POST 10Original post

When I did my brake refresh some of the OE shims got destroyed in the removal process - corrosion was the main cause. I see them as parts that just need replacing. You could try 3M tape on the Brembo shim, but not sure there is enough surface area on the pistons to enable an effective adhesion to the pad.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 2725127

Thanks, makes sense and that was my initial intention; known good/fresh is usually the best option for these things. The curveball was seeing the shim on the back of the replacement pads, so whilst my first thought was to pull them off and stick new Porsche ones on I thought I would consult the internet as someone will have done it before!

POST 14Original post

Shims from Porsche are crazy price! Over £120 for the rears? They are half that from other suppliers

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 2725143

Yes the Porsche tax is high on them that's for sure. 8x shims, 2xsprings, 4x caliper bolts and a 2xpins was £170 and that was including the 10% Porsche Classic discount! Quite often OPC is cheaper than D911 and others but not in this case. Feeling a little gouged but I've got them now so as long as it all goes together nice & fresh with no squealing I'm sure the stinging will subside!
