Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Opinion piece from Total 911 magazine. http://www.total911.com/opinion-why-...-than-the-993/ And I totally agree.

POST 3Original post

Amazon sales not going well so Johnny had to pick up a side job? I can't disagree with anything in there, but I'm just so tired of the "my favorite is better than your favorite" BS. Really there is no bad 911, especially when you take them in the context of their era. Each generation has its pluses and minuses and the combinations appeal to different people.

POST 4Original post

Lol, what slack jawed moron wrote that article. so it doesn't overheat in traffic...nor does any properly running 993 I've ever seen or heard about. Driving position and button position. Fine, even though I prefer the closer to the windshield feeling in the 993. the 996 is more nimble? what? how? moron. flat motor? eh, neither of them are particularly fast or quick revving, but ok. Better looking? what a crock of ****, but ok fine, subjective and to conclude, its cheaper. I'm surprised this mouth breathing idiot was even able to make it through the day.

POST 5Original post

I dare anyone to post that in the 993 Forum...

POST 6Original post

I don't think anyone can argue the performance and creature comfort improvements of the 996 over the 993. The 993 will always continue to be placed on a pedestal because it is the last of the 911s that had the old world feel to it. That is something you can't put into words or compare with statistics. The 996 offers a driving experience that is distinctly Porsche but has a lot more in common with "regular" vehicles than a 993 ever will. If you're looking for that unique experience that includes all sorts of smells, sounds, and quirky ergonomics that you can't find anywhere else, then a 996 will never satisfy those needs. But if you want a reasonably priced performance car that is versatile enough for daily driving, track duty, and who knows what else then the 996 is probably a better choice. But you can't say one is better than the other because they are different enough to keep you from being able to make a direct comparison. Depends on what you need it for. I chose a 996 because I wanted a daily driver. If my Porsche was my 3rd or 4th car I would have purchased a 993 when I had the chance to pick one up for $27k. Oh well, my mistake!

POST 7Original post

I need to drive my friends 993 sometime, but I agree with this. The 996 is a pretty modern common car, and although special it's not the same as the generations before it.

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 12753795

You think he is an idiot, yet most his points you tacitly agree with or at least don't contest? As far as the overheating, I will give you that NJ is a hellhole of such epic proportions that physics may not always apply, but in the rest of the world air cooled cars do not like idling in traffic during hot weather. That's not to say that they will overheat and seize, but a driver that cares about such things does start to pucker as the needle on the temp gauge continues to creep in the wrong direction. For the second, the 996 has been shown many times and in many venues to out perform the equivalent 993. It's a simple act of evolution and there is nothing to get your panties twisted about. Oh my god! The 997 out performs the 996. Crap! The 991 out performs the 997! Someone alert the media!

POST 10Original post

Aw crap, the old men from the lawn-mower engined forum are going to be all over in here again. It took us like 3 weeks to get rid of the old man stench last time they came over in significant numbers.

POST 11Original post

I work on and drive both 993's and 996's regularly... -993 is a PIA to work on in many ways, Porsche just added and added stuff to the original 911 chassis, has more character and gives greater sense of occasion-great weekend car -996 is clean sheet development and 'better' in every dimension, minus engine durability Carrera vs Carrera models, and is wayyy better to work on-great daily driver or track builds Both great cars. Very similar, very different. Cheers, Rob

POST 12Original post

I'd take a 964 over a 993 any day. They went all screwy on the head lights on that one.

POST 13Original post

I haven't driven a 993 and don't know how it feels but 1) I just don't like the sound, and 2) the interior reminds me of my brother's 1973 BMW 2002 (very dated).

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 12753961

aww, how cute, a NJ dig. Good one dunce. As for your points, I agree that its cheaper and has some more power. Its no where near better looking stevie wonder, nor do the ergonomics or driving position feel better for sporting driving to me. As for overheating...simply no. Stock 993s don't overheat in traffic. Does the oil temp increase? Sure. Then they have these nifty things called fans that turn on and reduce the oil temp. Fun how that works. Does the oil temp in the 996 increase in traffic too? It sure does, but then you wouldn't know that because they don't even give you an oil temp gauge. This article is just click bait bull****.

Yes, we get bored in our lawn mower forum because we don't have engines imploding on a regular basis. Sometimes its fun to see what the redheaded step children are up to and, yup, as usual, its a desperate attempt to try to justify their purchase of the worst 911 built in god knows how many years. Hows your ragged out "pristine" (LOL) 996 turbo?

Oooh First Grade insults. I'm hurt. Where is a Mod when I need one? Funny because I seem to recall you saying: That would be tacitly agreeing with the premise based on the assumption that such things can't really be measured and being good or bad is purely up to the individual. Personally I think the exterior of the 993 just looks like they had no good ideas since the 60s and the interior looks like they fired those designers in the 70s and forgot to hire new ones, but that's me. The 996's temps don't rise nearly as much and outside of not easily knowing when the oil is up to operating temp its not a big deal at all. It would certainly be nice to have one and I do agree it was a poor oversight, but it's not the end of the world. I'll tell you what, if I pay for the gas and throw in an oil change how about we meet in AZ next summer? We'll bring your 993 and my wife's 996 up to operating temp and then let them idle from sun up to sun down in a parking lot and see who puckers first. Of course that would be another way the 996 would be better than the 993, you don't need to be afraid to drive it across the country (outside of one shiningly stupid example that was scared to drive it 10'). Of that we can agree. It's just feeding BS trolls like you to come around and whine about how your car really is so much better (even though there are no concrete facts to support the argument in this case). You go be happy with your 993 (which apparently is a "modded out piece of track garbage") and your 997 and we'll be happy with our 996s.

POST 27Original post

Quotes source post: 12755587

No there is not a report of an engine failure every week. There is someone freaking out about the remote possibility of their engine failing at least once a week which then gets pounced on by a certain troll, but the engines aren't actually failing at the rate you suggest. Of course it could be pointed out that there aren't reports of 993 motors failing because you all are too busy arguing over how those floor mats impact the value so you never get out and drive them

POST 28Original post

Quotes source posts: 12755295, 12755456

ok, that was funny We can't trade stupid insults? damn, too bad. I was simply being reasonable. Of course looks are subjective, but based on the average 911 enthusiasts, the vast majority seem to prefer the 993. Thats pretty much the story of the 911, period. At least when you look at a 993 interior today it looks simple, clean, and classic. The 996 looks like a taurus interior with quality to match. With the exception of that being boring and having to spend time in your desert wasteland, sounds fine to me. I picked my 993TT up in santa monica and drove it to within 5 miles of the hudson river. I'm not sure how much further cross country you would like. I will be happy with both of them, although my 993 is hardly modded out or track garbage. You don't see us posting every time there is an article that the 993 is better than the 996 or 997. Thats because we are comfortable in our choice and don't always have to defend it. You 996 guys have a complex about your cars sucking, so you have to make threads like "ooo, went for a drive, imsb didn't blow, and it was fun" or "heres why my 996 is better than x,y,z". Admit you bought a car with shortcomings like we all did, admit that they aren't as popular as you'd like, and admit that you still like driving it, and we can all go on our way peacefully.

POST 29Original post

I'm sorry, these things have 10 quarts of oil and, what, 5 gallons fo coolent, and we're worried about them overheating?

POST 30Original post

993 is a great looking car, but I love my 996 and wouldn't change a thing. Go to the Vette forums same debate rages on there or any car forum. I for one like the debates, it keeps the relevance and emotion alive and well. It just reiterates how much we love our cars. Negative nancy and Debbie downers unite.

POST 31Original post

Quotes source post: 12755623

And while I don't personally agree with the majority, I wasn't arguing that. I was arguing that you insulted the writer (which I don't disagree with) and implied that his points were wrong, then you went on to actually support or at least not disagree with most of his points. I'm an east coaster just like you, just from a slightly less worse location so it would be a mostly equal trek. Cool. Seriously. Nothing saddens me more than these cars sitting around in garages not getting driven. They were made to be on the road and should be enjoyed that way. Apparently you are missing the sarcasm based on your commentary to the attorney and your admission that it's modded Dunno. I rarely hangout in areas of RL for cars that I don't own or have any interest in so I can't comment on the frequency of such posts. No complex here. We've had our since new, love it still, and never have regretted it. Had to dump half or better of it's current value into it this year to fix the transmission and catch up on stuff we've put off, but still have no complaints. Those "went for a drive and nothing happened" are A) because we love the cars and B) sarcastic anti-IMSB paranoia commentary. I never have claimed that it didn't have short comings. Doesn't mean it's not a damn fine car. I could care less if it is popular or not, but I am tired of the "lights look funny" moaning and overblown IMSB paranoia. And as far as I like driving cars (I'm just a SUV guy and actually love my P!g more than any 911), I have no complaints with ours. It's been a great car and is still a blast to drive. How much we love it and it's been good to us was a major factor in getting the P!g over the cheaper alternatives I was looking at. Can't really have much more of a ringing endorsement than doing it all over again.

20+ track days in stockish 993 so far and the only issue I've is a cracked rim and worn out tie rods. Many have put 200+ track days on there 993s. Pretty much every DE event there is a blown motor in 996/986/987. At last event my instructor's 996 decided to go into limp mode with 2 year old motor saying "go to dealer now". But base 996s are cheap disposable cars with decent performance. 996 gt3 is a different story, but hey its engine is based on lawnmower engine design.

Actually, while there is some animosity by some Corvette owners, by and large the Corvette owners don't go out of their way to sh*t on each other. Guys with tricked-out C7's and dudes with really tatty C3's and C4's get along just fine. Of course, they also understand that the cars evolve over time, and that a C4's suspension, while unique, isn't as effective as a C7's setup. It's not even a point that needs to be brought up, and it's f**king dumb to argue it. Is a C7 faster than a C5? Yes. Is an 80's oil embargo Corvette way down on power? Sure is. Does that slow-*** 80's 200HP 'Vette still have some interesting developments that the C3 didn't have? Yup. Only in the Porsche world do I see nearly this much BS about Old 911 vs. New 911, and 911 vs. Boxster, and Cayman vs. Boxster, and 911 vs. Cayman, and everyone else against Panamera/Cayenne. Many of the people here act like stuff, self-important a-holes.* *I just act like an a-hole; I'm delusion-free about my relative importance in the world.

"IMHO, the challenge of driving a Prius really well is as great as the challenge of driving a BMW (or alternative sports car) really well. A different kind of game, for sure, but equally difficult in its way. Cheers on your new Prius!"

I think some are not considering a very important fact when comparing the 993 and 996. Has anyone seen the asking prices lately for a clean 993? Some are near six figures now. Special versions, much more. The 996? Well selling one is kind of like a turd that just wont flush. Hence the low asking prices.

996 is great value. I'd never buy a 993 at today's asking prices, maybe a 993 DE car. Might as well get a 996 GT3.

POST 48Original post

what a stupid article - i guess this author is looking to increase the value of the 996 death tumble. C4S is a great looking/driving car but overall, the 993 is superior in design - one of the best designed/driving porsches made - and unless you have owned and driven both, your opinion is worthless. i sure miss both my 993's 1995 C4 and 1996 C2 ...and furthermore, the 356A cars are the best

Quotes source post: 12755875

How much time did you spend polishing your turd? Your too-special-to-drive turd? The comedy of your posts is that you researched the 996 ad nauseam prior to purchasing it - but you bought one anyway. That's almost as laughable as you proclaiming yourself this forum's most accomplished wrench - you know, hanging out in the sump of a blown M96 - when you've never had your hands on a blown M96 and (courtesy of Jake's smackdown) proved that you don't actually have any idea WTF you're talking about. While your catchy "turd just won't flush" phraseology is a bit crass, it DOES perfectly embody how everyone here feels about you...

First of all, this is off topic, but what a douche! He must have never driven a real performance car. I own one, think of it as a lazy mule that hauls stuff, but I'd never expect any performance out of it. As far as bad choices in life, listen to this: Bought the Prius $23K brand new. I have 76K miles on it and it is currently valued at $10K. Money spent on preventive maintenance (PM) $1000 on oil changes and basic things. Overall $14 in the hole. [$/mile: 0.1842 (excludes gas & insurance)] Bought my 996 for $21.5 spent about $5K on PM and $2.5K on aftermarket warranty (that was stupid, I know). Sold her for $20.75K. Overall $8.25K in the hole. [$/mile: 0.9167 (excludes gas and insurance)] I will admit this though: There is no enjoyment to driving a Prius; it sucks, hands down. But I will also admit that I don't worry about the what if the engine goes and suddenly my $8.25 loss turns into $25K. And finally, anyone paying six figures for a 993 is a stupid fool. IMO Nevertheless, I miss her dearly!

POST 53Original post

Quotes source post: 12755786

Observational bias no doubt. You saw one car fail and now it's "pretty much every DE event." I have been to a couple of track days this year and I have not seen a M96 engine blow including mine. So my experience is, "a M96 engine has never blown at a track." If blown engines at track events were as common as you claim this board and others would be on FIRE with those reports. Over the past 4 YEARS there are only a handful of blown engine reports, and I can find that many on any corvette, bmw, or other sports car enthusiast board. YMMV. Let me have 20 laps at Pocono Raceway in your 993, I'll blow that engine no problem.

POST 54Original post

Like most every article out there, this one is all opinion, right down to the author stating the 996 looks better than a 993. Nothing wrong with that. I will say that the author should probably drive more 996s and more 993s to get a better opinion of the two. I have been working on one 993 engine for the past two weeks, and the car it goes in only has 40K miles. It drives much worse than my 993 that I run the hell out of all the time, with 130K miles on it. I drive 80-100 Porsche 9X6/9X7 per year, and all of them go at least 50 miles before shipping home. Some of them drive like crap, are not comfortable, and have noises. Others drive beautifully, and just as good, or better than my 993. I've owned all of them over time, and love them all. My favorite daily driver is my old 912E. Yes, I am crazy, but I've had it longer, and put more miles on it than all my other cars combined.

POST 55Original post

Quotes source post: 12756117

It maybe an observtional bias because there are a lot of 996/986/987 on the track compared to other models. Also those who track a lot put in upgraded ims, radiator, and different oil pan, so those engines last a bit longer. So let's see: last year at watkins glen i think there was one a day, one gt3 blew brand new replacment motor at poconos, one cayman caught fire at tbolt, At summit point two caymans were smoking like crazy (hopefully due to just an air oil separator) Instructor's car went into limp mode with an engine that was just a couple of years on it (with all factory improvements) And yes I've seen one race prepped 993 blew an oil line. This is from just 6-7 events, so yea pretty rare and biased. Why do you think there are all these guys making IMS, oil pans, air/oil separator, third radiator, tranny cooler etc. New porsches are street cars (except for gt3/gt4 and even then you may need some suspension pieces). Old porsches are race cars with comforts added to them. And anybody can blow somebody's engine if they try. All of us go to the track with goal not to.

POST 57Original post

Quadcammer was once a lover of the 996: Afternoon gents. Let me set the scene. Im 25, work in manhattan, well educated, stable well paying career, savings/investments are where they should be, etc. I currently have a 2005 Mercedes-Benz S500 4matic sport with the designo package. The thing is fully loaded, and is absolutely beautiful. this is my current daily driver and I like it a lot. Its smooth, quiet, and totally comfortable. In a real Jekyll and hyde scenario, I also have a supercharged 1999 mustang Cobra convertible. It puts 700 horsepower to the rear tires, handles fairly well, and has been pretty dependable. I like the car for its performance and looks, but the interior and persona are lacking a bit. Now, I have about a 2 mile commute to the train station, which has uncovered, but secure parking. I do not drive into the city, and my apartment complex only allows one car (unless you pay an exorbitant amount). I keep the cobra in storage and take it out when I want to experience the performance. As you can imagine, this is not an ideal situation because the Cobra gets hardly any miles, and I have to hike out to the storage facility (20 miles away) to get the thing. So, after some deliberation, I decided that one of the very few cars that would give me excellent performance with decent snow capability and daily driver characteristics (fairly quiet, heated seats, navigation, leather everywhere, etc) is the late model 996 Turbo. So, I have a few questions about consolidated my stable into the single porsche: 1. How is this car to daily drive? Is it loud, does it ride hard? I've driven one, but that was in a more performance oriented setting, and I didn't get an idea of how the car would handle rough roads at slow speeds. 2. How prevalent is the 2nd gear popout on later models? Is the car generally reliable in terms of electronics? I figure the engine and drivetrain should be pretty stout. 3. Are you happy with the interior? Whenever I look at these cars, I get a bit disappointed with certain aspects, such as the seat controls, the center console, the buttons, and certain little things (exposed black screw heads, some panel fitment issues, etc). Coming from a full leather designo S-class, I have fairly high standards for interiors. Does it have any common squeaks, creaks, or rattles? 4. Easy performance mods? I don't want a loud exhaust, but a tiny bit more sound, and maybe some tuning? Id be happy with about 500bhp. Is that easily achievable or something that requires the turbo upgrades from Kevin? 5. Would this car be a waste for my driving? I know I don't love taking the cobra for drives that are only 5 minutes long. It never gets fully warm, and I don't have much use for its performance. That said, having one car that is capable of being good at both would be much more convenient. I figure a nice 04 coupe with mid miles (25k or so) would run about 55k or so, which is well within the budget. I would love to get a 997TT, but Im not comfortable getting into that price range at this time. So gentlemen, I appreciate your thoughts on the matter, and although I have searched, my questions are a bit personalized, so I hope you will take some time to give me thoughtful responses as opposed to telling me to search. Thank you and happy holidays, Oliver

Where in this did I say that I loved the 996 (to be clear, this was turbo only, which has certain obvious advantages to the NA 996). It was simply the most reasonably priced choice at the time (before 2009 when I bought the 993).

POST 59Original post

Cmon bruh. No one is ******* the 996 TT or 996 GT3. All the problems are with the M96 NA powered 996's. The stock engine was/is a complete disaster of thrown together, mismatched, low dollar scrap iron that needs mods just to survive mild driving, much less any track use. What is so hard to understand about this? Surely the class action lawsuit convinced even the diehard M96 lovers that Porsche just totally f#@$%$ up the design?

I got 134k km on my m96, half of those were done on the track. Used as a daily driver in Canadian winters. #4 shows signs of scoring and the engine taps but it still pulls and loves it at red line. My IMS was perfect when I replaced it. the m97 997 engine is the same design and it is no better. Yes their are more durable engines out there but I think the main issue in durability is the use of lokasil liners.

POST 64Original post

IMO Best looking wingless 911 is by far the 996 C4S. When looking at the new 911's since, it looks like it will remain so. The 997.1 GT3RS is by far the best looking 911 ever, with a close second being the 930. 993 has a nice rear end and has a great engine sound, the wide body C2S and C4S have incredible nice looking hips.

POST 65Original post

The prettiest in my opinion is a track modded guards red 996 TT. I'm not kidding either.

POST 66Original post

Quotes source post: 12756348

how do you know the engine loves it at redline? does it talk to you? send notes? smoke signals (with your oil burning, this may be likely)

POST 67Original post

Quotes source post: 12756385

It loves red line because I let it sit there for seconds at a time to listen to it. I expect it to blow but it never does just sings back to me. It burns more at idle on a cold start idle, but burns normally when being driven hard.

POST 68Original post

Quotes source post: 12756416

POST 70Original post

Quotes source post: 12756416

that's exactly how mine was also. while idling, you could put your hand over the LHS tailpipe and watch the oil splash on your Palm. driving hard or long trips, not much oil was burnt at all. part of my testing was fill up at home, drive to Calaboguie, race it, drive home. that kind of driving would see the oil level Guage drop by a bar - if that. here's a video of my C4S chasing a tesla and other cars at Calaboguie. my cyl 4 & 6 are toast in this vid, you've seen my engine build thread. https://youtu.be/U65YkjOObRo I really, really wanted to just keep adding oil and driving it but the internet scared me.

POST 71Original post

And the engine is stock???? Nice to see someone at least agrees with us and admits it. I would assume you will also agree that the M96 NA is a POS compared to your TT engine? What other mass produced engine has an admitted known failure rate of 10%? That's just the IMSB, not the other MOF's that also cause CEF. Even the forum poll stays at 9.5 to 10% IMSB failure rate.

POST 72Original post

The best looking factory made Porsche is a 1988 911 Carrera or Turbo. So all those 964, 993, and whatever else came after can suck it. 993 headlight / front end design sucks and nothing is going to change that. 996 (my car) headlights suck even worse, but I don't pretend they don't. Nobody, nobody gave a damn about 964s when they came out. The headlights are on point but overall the other body design changes suck. Most 911 people hated the bumper/body updates and they still suck today. The ONLY REASON 964s are extremely valuable now is not for what they ARE but instead for what they can be when sent to Singer Vehicle Design plus $400,000 . Singer single-handedly made the 964 valuable, before that no one gave a sheet about that car. So, to recap, if you don't own a pristine 1988 Carrera or Turbo your Porsche sucks and is not a real Porsche it's just a factory mistake. Two things I did in my 996 today: I took it over 100 mph on some open road. Then I stopped for some breakfast. It was a small cafe with maybe 8 tables. Another guy in an Audi R8 pulls in comes inside the shop and says "Who's got the Porsche?" I say, "That's me." He says, "That's a nice car. I used to have a 928." Don't worry, I let him know it's not a real Porsche, can't be driven on a track, won't last 15,000 miles before blowing up, headlights don't work, and it cost less than a cup of coffee.

No one is agreeing with you. He is stating facts. He has scored cylinders, yet he is still driving it and it still works fine You on the other hand state hyperbole and spread misinformation because you never had a single real problem with your car. At least Quad knows how to be entertaining with his trolling and can be humorous at times. You're just the idiot outcast that everyone wishes would just go away. I figured it would take a couple of weeks for the sting of Jake pointing out that you don't know all that you think you do (twice even) to abate and we'd have a bit of respite. Oh well...

POST 74Original post

Quotes source post: 12756552

The engine is stock, few bolts on added and giac tune. I wouldn't call it POS considering the type of usage its done, I expected more from it given Porsche's racing heritage and I'll likely end of like AWDguy and fix it before it does go. I assume many other things are wearing out in it any ways so a refresh is also needed.

Engaging his superstitious blather is like patting the head of your neighbor's crippled dog: sure, you'll want to wash after, but it costs you nothing, reminds you how lucky you are, and offers him brief respite from a truly depressing routine. Sure, it's weird to find your neighbor's crippled dog thrashing about on your porch in what might be either a pathetic plea for attention or a seizure, but work with me a little: "Good quad cam. POST 115Original post

I love articles because they always stir up so much foolish controversy. A guy wrote a subjective, meaningless article that is clearly based on little more than personal opinion. Who cares? He could have said a Yugo was actually a better car than a 993 and it wouldn't have made any difference. I get arguing the merits of the article and criticizing the author. Whether you agree or disagree with his conclusion is ultimately irrelevant based on the lack of meat in the piece. I happen to "love" 993s and 996es. They're completely different cars to me. Why things take a turn to the personal or to attack one person's preference though is something I don't understand. So, congratulations to anyone who happily walks up to someone to tell them their car (whatever it is) sucks. It says a lot about the character of the speaker, not the car they're referring to. While I cannot defend some of the things tossed back and forth here my guess is that he read the Thread Title: Why the 996 is better than the 993 and felt the need to comment. I can attest that Quad has gone above and beyond to do things that both members (996 and 993) of the P-Car community wanted to purchase while Quad donated all such proceeds to various charities. I say that because I was the buyer of one of the prints he labored to produce. Comon Guys, we all know both the 996 and the 993's are phenomenal in their own right.....................
