My Cayman is going to be Tiptronic equipped and I noticed on these versions, that the additional radiator is basically unprotected from road debris. Is it likely that there is (will be) after-market grills available for protection?
Maybe this is what I saw on CarbonCayman's car today. My salesperson didn't seem to know that Tips comewithout the center filler piece. if it were mine, I would at least spray paint the front radiator black. An egg crate grill to compliment the two side intakes would be a nice touch. At which point the front end would really start to have a Ferrari look. Actually, this would be a good aftermarket item for BumperPlugs. I think all Cayman owners might be interested.
I take it the Boxster doesn't have this issue?
mpollard, I have to agree. When I first saw the central filler panel I was very disappointed and felt (and still do) that it was out of place. Count me in for a matched grill style replacement![/quote]
I am not sure, but the Boxster front clip has a lot of similarities.
Mpollard, If you're referring to the black plastic filler in lower middle, mine does have it. It may have been off while they prepped it or may have been another car?
As for the looks of it, I'll look at it again.
When I saw a tiptronic next to a 6 sp, I really liked the look of the radiator. Much better than the black plastic divot. Perhaps a egg crate grill as well, but a nice look in comparison to the6 speedas it is. I liked it enough that I priced out the mod to duplicate it. Parts, including the extra radiator, hoses, clamps, plastic shrouding, etc are around 600 bucks through the dealer with install $2-400 according to my dealer. He says that the 6 speed is basically pre-plumbed, so it's an easy mod.
It's not that I don't like the look, I am just concerned for the safety of the radiator from road debris.
For what it's worth, the black plastic center filler on the 6-speeds provides the manual Cay with a CD of .29, as compared to a CD of .30 when the grill is open for the automatic. I suspect the CD could be improved further if that center filler was changed from concave (which fills up with air and disturbs the flow across the bumpers), to a unit that sits flush with the rest of the bumper.

I was wondering about that. Any physicists know how much of a difference that could make on top speed or gas mileage at highway speeds, say 80 mph?
