Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I will let you know when I get there. My car runs as good as the day it rolled off the floor. The key is mobil 0-40. I run it every day for and sometimes to Houston, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio. I am at 88k now and plan on running this up to 400k. Call me crazy..that's ok..my last Porsches ran high mileage as well with little to no problems. These cars were meant to be driven. I do not recommend a low mileage one that is older unless you are looking for problems if you plan on driving it regularly. The 996 has to be the best value on the market bar none for a 911. People paying crazy prices for 993's are mistaking the 996 as I believe it is truly a better all around car with AC that works very well, handling and power that the 993 can not match. The 996 is nothing short of amazing.

POST 2Original post

I love my aircooled Pcars but I dont know what the heck everybody has against the 996..... I would happily drive a C4 year round. I heard one thing that was a little disturbing.... the manual transmission's are not german getrag units but stuff made over in the far east!!! Any truth to that? For that matter I think even the 997's have the same units and only the Gt3's and turbo's get the german gear boxes. Hearing stuff like that kinda bothers me. Oh, and Meteor grey metallic is a great color. Any pics?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Herman, Not sure where the tranny is manufactured but it is silky smooth. Better than any newer model Porsche I have ever driven. My 996 is believed to be the only meteor metallic grey unit ordered directly from Porsche as it was a custom option that was quite expensive..about $4300 for the color choice and there were less expensive variations including seal grey for a fraction of the cost. I much prefer the meteor metallic as it fits the lines of the car perfectly and reminds me of the Aston Martin Vanquish Tungsten Grey paint. It is truly gorgeous. I also have the optional 18' turbo wheels that were ordered as part of the custom build. Here are some pics:

POST 4Original post

Looks great. Not so sure about the chromed (?) wheels. Have fun!

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yup, the wheels came like that from the factory thus the $2850 option cost. Most people who see the car for the first time claim that the wheels really "make" the car. If you see the car in the sunlight the paint looks like glass and the wheels really do seem to kick it to the next level.

my dad has close to 300 k on his '84 Carrera Cab, still like new, burns a little oil on initial startup if sitting a week, that is it

My 86 911 feels like a tank... the 996... not even close in build quality. It's kind of a shame, despite that I do enjoy the 996 quite allot!

POST 8Original post

Fantastic stuff....however, is it me? Or is your car riding a bit high? J

I have personally inspected, cleaned, and reinstalled my gear box and it is a Getrag.
