Sure its very possible, as possible as getting any good used car!

I used the report to negotiate with the seller for a lower price and to help with some of the repairs.

Hollywood, you've been pretty reasonable and better than most new members (in using the IMSB sticky rather than starting your own thread), but you need a thicker skin around here.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Considering an out-of-state, sight unseen purchase from a private party.
If anyone has done this, can you shoot me a PM - would like to pick your brain for a couple of minutes.
^^Distance and my available time with the upcoming holidays.
This would only be considered with a PPI from a very reputable indy, which has already been discussed.
Maybe you can fly to the city the seller is in and purchase upon completion of PPI and your inspection? Drive it back home. How far away is the seller? What if there are more cosmetic defects etc that you can tell from photos
While searching for my car early on I can relate to the impulse buy mind set, as I almost made the same mistake. I live in TX and 2 cars that made my list were located in Chicago both at dealerships. It's funny but after talking with the salesman over the phone I was 100% invested in this car with check book waiting. These cars for some reason grab hold and don't let go. After pulling myself out a little I realized that the idea of spending my hard earned cash sight unseen was foolish at best. It sounds like you are trying to rush the purchase due to time constraints and with these or any high end purchase can lead to regret.
I say take your time, but if this is the car then I would find a reputable shop and explain the logistics. Many people here I'm sure live in the area close to the car and could go take a look at it before you invest in a ppi. They will know what to look for and will be able to give you a preliminary honest review.
In the end of about a year of searching I lucked out and found a car within 250 miles of my house and was able to put eyes on it before committing to a ppi.
I live in Chicago and bought my 996 from a Porsche dealer in Florida...sight unseen. While they did show it had a Porsche remanufactured engine put in at 65k, there was a bunch of stuff I had to address when I bought it. Luckily they refunded me $3,500 via check after I had a talk with them
So didn't work out too bad. Sometimes emotions get the best of you. Wont happen again!
I bought my 996 C4S in California and drove it home. I had a PPI done in California and the seller was very helpful in arranging this. I did have the right to walk away from the deal when I saw the car in person, but it met my expectations and I bought it.
I have purchase 2 996's out of state and sight unseen, but you must have PPI.
Even if you get to see car you must get a PPI. Decent pics can tell you a lot.
Yes both cars were excellent cars for me.
RBC
are you out of you f_cking mind?
wow, anyone who thinks a PPI will assure a great transaction must have their head examined. especially if the owner of the car is customer of shop performing the PPI.
there are so many nightmares related to car buyers trusting the word of 2nd parties - big NO NO
I don't view the PPI as any kind of guarantee that a potential purchase won't have problems. Many issues can be missed in a PPI. That being said, a PPI often reveals problems or cosmetic issues that can then serve as a further negotiating points. When I bought my C4S, the PPI revealed a leaking RMS seal, a bad catalytic converter and a host of cosmetic issues. I used the report to negotiate with the seller for a lower price and to help with some of the repairs.
Hey groovzilla Bite me!
A good PPI tells me, a non-Porsche mechanic more than I know about a used Porsche.
What are your suggestions for checking out a car before purchase? Just driving it for 1/2 hour doesn't do it for me. For example I drove a car before a PPI and didn't notice the tranny whine that PPI tech. picked up, etc.
Long distance shopping is not easy, you usually don't get to spend a lot of time with car, etc.
RBC
Is this your first Porsche 911? If yes, Do not buy sight unseen. It's your money however ... so you may ignore this advice. I won't buy a car from my mother sight unseen.
No, I'm not out of my f'ing mind.
Just because you wouldn't do it doesn't mean it can't be successfully done.
I've already had more PMs from people who have successfully done it than negative opinion replies to this thread.
And thanks to everyone who has PM'ed me.
Almost did, but there is a difference between buying from someone you don't have any history on and someone with a good rep. We'd trust groovy because he has been around a long time and has shown himself to be a good guy.
As an aside, I thing groovy is starting to jones for a new Silver/Black 996 C4S. He's been a bit grumpy lately...
I bought my 996 sight unseen...we'll sort of. I had my bother who happens to live in the area I purchased from take a look at it, test drive it, then in for a PPI at a dealership he has workings with. In the end, I'm happy with the purchase, I never saw the car in person until about a month and half when it showed up at my doorstep
They are not 'negative replies to this thread' as you call them. Simply reactions from posters to this board. I mean, what kind of replies did you honestly expect???? You go on to say "And thanks to everyone who has PM'ed me". Why didn't you just say "and f u c k to all who have posted to my question". I wonder why the people who PMed you didn't respond to the board. They were afraid they too would be blasted down by other posters. CHICKENS...
Or Hurdi they could have PMed him because, you know, that's what he asked for
I don't think it's particularly a PM style conversation as all new buyers could benefit from the wisdom and experiences being expressed, but that is what he asked for.
dearest holly - change poopy pants and read > i do caution you because i have done it - just trying to save you the pain.
purchased expensive mercedes out of florida sight unseen 7 yrs ago - me cry big time when car arrive
Recognition and acceptance are the first steps towards healing
I would like to request, however, that rather than your standard fair, pick up a black/black aero MkI C4 with full leather and sunroof delete. Then when you sell it cheap 2 weeks later, give me a call
Because they did what asked - they PM'ed me.
I never asked for any opinions on the matter and damn sure don't appreciate being asked if I'm f'ing stupid. Is this clear enough for you or do I need to PM you to explain it better?
Hollywood, you've been pretty reasonable and better than most new members (in using the IMSB sticky rather than starting your own thread), but you need a thicker skin around here. We are a helpful and welcoming bunch, but we can be a pack of wolves too.
I'm also not sure that Groovy's comments were directed specifically at you. I personally read them as directed at rbc (who you can spin up by suggesting you can get a good 996TT for less than $50k
).
Sight unseen? How is that possible in America? Are you a Sandinista in Austin and they have knocked out all your comms?
We've driven 500 miles just to look at a car before the
inteweb and if its crap leave or plop cash, sign a few things and get it home. Ive also bought 3 long distance cars ala pbay and driven them home... this one from Sea/Tac to STeX. Even after flights, lodging, a new wheel bearing, 1 tire, 1tow(AAA
), gas...ya,it can be worth it. NEVER a p-car though
lots of liars and lemons in that crop apparently. Another from CT to BigD in a Passat from a VW dealer(nearly screwed on that one
)
Or are you talking about a pig in a poke situation?
Take the Texas forms to be signed and hope you get a friendly cnty tax agent when you get back. If you've got TX insurance you are mostly covered as soon as you *** hits the seat.
Now if your trying to broker a ppi, wire transfers, shipping, delivery and restitution then. Slow down and go to a dealer when you get a chance.
Did i miss where the OP Mentions a 996TT for less than 50? Is someone quoting a PM for any reason good? Sure its very possible, as possible as getting any good used car!
I thought this was a fun thread or are ya'll talking about shady deals?
I've done it once. I'm not going to PM you.
Never again. I had a PPI from a shop in the town before having it delivered. The PPI evaluation and my evaluation were miles apart. One example; The windows were glacially slow to go up. I asked the shop if it was the same when they tested it and the answer was 'we didn't operate the windows'. That was a minor part of a serious mistake.
Never again.
if you don't care what the car looks like, sounds like or smells like then certainly buy from afar without personally inspecting.
considering i've purchased over 20 porsche cars out of state over the past 35 years, i think i have a bit of experience in this arena - i would NEVER buy a porsche without personal inspection and full PPI report determining if there are any over-revs, paintwork, etc.
Hollywood - check out the 60 page RL thread regarding the fellow RL'er's GT2 purchased as a porsche certified car from Beverly Hills Porsche dealership - $120K sight unseen purchase and buyer traded his Ferrari and they sold it before he could rectify problems. BHP refunded only small amount - Buyer wrapped his car due to poor paintwork which was warn down(thin) over entire car and couldn't be buffed and rear bumper repaint - BHP totally lied to this guy and little recourse - even porsche couldn't help the guy even though it was sold as a porsche certified car!
Very telling story as to why sight unseen is a big non no
