Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

My 911 had a new battery installed the day before I bought it, but when it needs replacing I'll be looking for something lighter.
Leading evidence: 'Install day' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'shortest one of my batteries has lasted, the one' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Install day' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Used existing hardware to mount plate to battery tray.

Suspected cause
That's probably the shortest one of my batteries has lasted, the one before it was seven years.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Yes I've been using a red top on my 996 for at least 5 years. Very happy with it!... The Optima you want is the 34R. No need to change cables. I fabricated an adapter plate for it with a plastic board similar to a chef's cutting board. Used existing hardware to mount plate to battery tray. Do a quick search in the forum and you'll find tons of info on how to fabricate and mount this.
I know this is going to be the opposite of what most people say but I would steer clear of the optima battery. I used to work in the autoparts industry for what we all know as a currently publicly traded company and one of autozones major competitors. The warrantees on optima batteries compared to the house brand agm batterys I.e. duralast from autozone is always less. 1 year compared to 3 years. So right of the bat I don't know why youd want less of a warrantee for even more money. Also on a side note they make full size lithium ion car batteries now that are light enough to play catch with. so if you have the money that's the way to go. But back to Optima batteries, in one year we have waranteed more optimas than any other battery. They agm cores are known to crack, as well as the capped seals don't work very well and are notorious for issues. a lot of this has to do with the 3 separate cell cylinders inside the battery, if one cell goes bad which happens frequently the barttery is useless. Anyways auto parts stores are better with waranteeing house brand batteries than the higher end ones anyway.
just my 2 cents
This is my photo of installing a short battery. I flipped and bent the bolt on plate to secure the battery.
Did not add threaded holes, just reversed the clamp. I did the same on my 2000 996.
I have used optima's in a few different cars over the years and I have 2 car's with them right now. That being said, they do have good and bad points. For me the main + is the looks. The main drawback is lack of durability. None of mine have lasted like a lead acid battery will. Many of my friends have had the same experience also. My 911 had a new battery installed the day before I bought it, but when it needs replacing I'll be looking for something lighter.
I agree as well. I got the correct fit Diehard AGM 50748 and just moved on. All this fuss over a battery when you have to change them every 2-3 years anyway.
The Optima in my '84 is seven years old. In fact I just replaced the battery (non AGM) in my daily BMW - nearly six years old. That's probably the shortest one of my batteries has lasted, the one before it was seven years.
I'm in Arizona which is supposed to kill batteries... I don't know what I'm doing right..?
Ten or 12 years ago, Optima was the only AGM battery around, so it was better and lasted longer than the others. Now that Duralast, Bosch, Deka and others have AGM batteries, Optima has no advantage, and needs some work to make it fit a 996. I have a Duralast AGM H7 which fits the second hole on the battery tray. If you really want, you can make an H8 work in the third hole which isn't threaded for the bolt.
