Suggestion

I'm hoping to have this roof replaced for a carbon fiber one, with perhaps a functional small roof vent.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Anybody know why there are these strips running on the sides on the roof on the Cayman S ? Is it because the car's roof was riveted/glued etc? I also notice them on 997s. I'm hoping to have this roof replaced for a carbon fiber one, with perhaps a functional small roof vent.

POST 2Original post

I believe those are tracks to install the roof top carrier.

POST 3Original post

Yes that is the roof carrier. If you look at the photos here you can see it and see how big the carrier appears relative to the car.

POST 4Original post

I was going to say they are for my surfboard racks! Aloha Russ

POST 5Original post

Russ, You are correct! Can't wait to see that Cobalt Blue Cayman, a perfect color for HI. The racks are for cyclists here in Austin, naturally.

POST 6Original post

And skiers and cyclists in Santa Fe. Don't think my saddle will fit inmy Cayman however. Better keep the truck too.

POST 7Original post

Carmon Red, I know I will love my cobalt, but I ahve to say that Carmon Red is one of the most beautiful colors I have ever seen on any car. I think I told you that I saw it on a Carrera over here, well I saw it again at the shopping center and fell in love with it, but a month too late. I will sure look forward to seeing some pics of your car! Russ

POST 8Original post

Don't the 911s have the same roof "rails" for rack attachments?

POST 9Original post

Really? I had no idea. I'm not really going to use a Porsche as a U-Haul and I find them a bit too much - They dont look clean with the car. Any way to get rid of them?

POST 10Original post

BUY A 350 Z, THEN YOU CAN BOLT ON A SUPERCHARGER, LOWER IT, CHIP IT, BUY A NEW INTAKE AND EXHAUST , YOU WILL GET RID OF THE ROOF RACK ATTACH POINTS COVERSAND HAVE 295 HORSE POWER./fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/embaressed_smile.gif

POST 11Original post

(In dumb accent) Hah Hah Hah tat's soo funni he. You should go to stand-up comedy. Taht was soo funni. (If you shouldn't tell, I was sarcastic) Sorri, I'm new to Porsche. I honestly didn't know that you would be - offended by a new guy not knowing what those strips are. Thank goodness that kevozzi, the King of the Porsche purists, had told me a few suggestions. But Really, sorri if I offended you and for being completey ignorant of German Engineering. By typing it all in capitals, I believe you were pretty pissed off and angry @ me. Again, Sorri... sheesh! Edited by - Crazy_fast on 12/06/2005 9:23:29 PM

POST 12Original post

Crazy, I don't think that you have offended anyone. It is really easy to misread the intent of a post. We have to look at it as all in fun. I been looking at the dumb seam and never thought to even question it. You have a acute vision for things like that and saw it as unattractive and now that you mentioned it, it is! And who is gonna put racks on their Cayman? Well I probably shouldn't say that because someone reading this right now is probably saying I am #%$hole! Aloha Russ

POST 13Original post

Yes the 997 has the same lines in the roof and rack mounting points , so did the previous generation 996's for what it is worth...

POST 14Original post

I would have understood it as a joke, but kevozzi placed the post in CAPITALS. On the net, if you do this, this means that the you are yelling, flaming and/or pissed off at a another person to which you are addressing the post to. So, naturally, I thought this guy was flamming at me, rather than telling a joke. And besides, I was frustrated at other matters at the time so I might over-done it. After all, I'm only human.

POST 15Original post

Crazy, I know that caps means shouting, but I have found this to be a very muture group and I will just give him the benefit of a doubt. We all have our moments, but no one is worth judging! I I just think of my car and that puts me in a good mood /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/drive.gifRuss

POST 16Original post

Sorry if I offended you Crazy Fast, I was on caps lock from another program. It was a joke and not ment to be hurtful.Kevozzi.

POST 17Original post

Returning to the question - how to get rid of them? All you have to do is watch some of those custom car building shows and you know that, given enough money, anything is possible. But is it worth it? I'm pretty confident that once you see the Cayman 'in the flesh', you won't be focussed on the roof tracks. Nor will most other people. But if it really bugs you... it's just money.

POST 18Original post

k, no beef. I was just emotional at the time so it's no problem. Anyway, thanks for the answers.

POST 19Original post

Hello, In regards to the Roof rack mount system (which is very slick, but I'd never use it), those "cuts" in the roof line are also an aerodymamic aid (channeling the air straight over the roof), as well as a method of keeping rain water from freely rolling off the roof when you open/close the door. -LK

POST 20Original post

Lizard King, I have never heard that, but it sounds logical. Russ

POST 21Original post

You don't need to worry about the roof rack tracks as you cannot see them from the drivers seat anyway. BMW has the same things, it also is a seam where they weld the body panels together i believe.

POST 23Original post

Yep, those seams seem to have a lot of uses, roof rack being the obvious one. Lizard King i agree with you on the rain water thing. In the UK,those seams on our E39 5er saloon, it does channel rainwater away, n it seems to let the water out by the rear lights, not sure how it works on the Cayman. Clearly the seams have different purposes in different countries lol

POST 24Original post

I was looking at my Dad's new CLS 500 Mercedes and it has the same exact roof channels. Now I am starting to see them everywhere I look. Till someone (Crazy I think) pointed them out I didn't even notice. Russ

POST 25Original post

Russ, how old is your Dad?Does helook aswell as you do at 59? Your my new hero Man!

POST 26Original post

My Dad is 86 and still going strong! I will never forget what he once told me when I was a wee lad. He was friendly and still is with everyone. He would greet a big fat ugly lady like he a beauty and I once asked him why. He said, ' son I treat all women like they are beautiful, because they all have friends'. Dad was right! Here is a little family portrait. That Dad in the middle, he had to be next to the women.
