First thing I would do is to check the power steering fluid reservoir.

Suggestion
If the sound is still there, check the started to ensure it's disengaging (note that this is the part where some forum members love to use the word "bendix" as many times as possible).

I'd start by removing the belt and testing each accessory pulley and idler pulley to see if one is locked or hard to turn.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all, I'm 1 year into my 02 996TT ownership and the car has been everything I hoped it would be and has performed flawlessly. This morning when I started the car, there was a very loud screeching sound coming from the engine compartment. When I opened the deck lid to try to isolate where the sound was originating from, it appeared to be coming from the belt drive just behind the airflow box. The sound also seemed to get louder when I turned the steering wheel back and forth. I chose not to drive the car today as a result. Has anyone experienced this before? Is it a major issue or an easy fix? By the way, the same thing happened over the weekend when the car was cold but immediately fixed itself in a few seconds.
Thanks for jumping in and helping this newbie out!
First thing I would do is to check the power steering fluid reservoir. If it is low, you can get these noises. Additionally, it is sensitive to ambient temperature and the noises can go away after it warms up and the fluid expands/rises to levels that prevent the pump from cavitating.
If one of the accessories is locked up, the noise that results from the belt being dragged over the pulley makes a sound like you describe. A starter that is failing to disengage can also make the sound. It's also possible that the secondary air injection pump is causing the sound.
I'd start by removing the belt and testing each accessory pulley and idler pulley to see if one is locked or hard to turn. This costs nothing.
If everything moves as expected when the belt is removed, start the car (it's safe to start and idle the car very briefly with the belt off). If the sound is still there, check the started to ensure it's disengaging (note that this is the part where some forum members love to use the word "bendix" as many times as possible).
