Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I'm pretty sure the previous owner said he didn't think the condenser was the problem though, so I'll be checking all the pipes underneath for odd stains when I get it up on stands.

I will get some of those mesh grills fitted though.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It's about 10 days since I picked up my first 996 - a 1998 C2 Cabriolet with 91000 miles. I've driven it about 200 miles, and it's been absolutely fabulous so far ... no nasty noises or smoke!
It's far from perfect, and the previous owner was very honest about all the niggles and issues. There is also a huge gap in the invoice records from 2016 - 2023, although all the service stamps are in the book. As I only paid £10,250 I was happy to take this on as a project, as I was happy with the engine (especially it being a 3.4L).
It seems to have all the good options (heated sport seats, full leather, 6-speaker stereo, cruise control, LSD, PCM1)
I've already managed to knock off a significant chunk of the niggle list:
- rebuilt the indicator assembly to fix the non-functioning indicator
- replaced the ignition barrel to fix the sticky ignition switch
- installed an Apple Carplay unit and replaced the dash speakers with much better ones.
- Repaired the broken centre console lid hinge.
- Replaced the missing hardtop rear seal with a generic ebay item (£16 instead of £375 for the genuine article!)
I've just this afternoon removed the front bumper to clean out the crap ... and boy was there a lot of it! Also, the bumper and wheel arch liners were held on by about 5 screws! I may have also found a contributing factor to the barely-functioning aircon:
I've ordered a replacement condensor, but of course I now have to get the system degassed which is a massive pain as the car is in pieces! I'm sure I can find a mobile specialist to come to me rather than reassembling and driving to KwikFit...
I also have a stack of new Brembo discs and pads which I'll be fitting next week, as the current discs are all quite ridged. That will also be the opportunity to look at the suspension to see what needs doing ... it could have been done in the 'missing years' but I'm not holding my breath!
to be continued ...
We love a bit of diy work on the 996 subby
Keep us posted.
That hose must be for the headlight washers ..correct? Can't see any sign of impact damage at the front, that's a good sign. What state was the bumper cover in? My project car was a mess so I learnt how to plastic weld and fixed loads of the broken fixing tabs.
Good Luck with it, well done for keeping another one alive, it looks like an honest car, fingers crossed you don’t get a big list when you jack it up!
I used a mobile AC guy earlier in the year, was handy, there’s quite a few of them around ..
Turns out my local garage, 200m away, does aircon. Also, it was actually not a massive pain to reassemble enough to drive, so I can just get it over tomorrow. I'm pretty sure the previous owner said he didn't think the condenser was the problem though, so I'll be checking all the pipes underneath for odd stains when I get it up on stands. It can do no harm to replace them in any case.
Fit mesh in front of the condensers.
Thread 'DIY Ice Saver'
11 Jul 2014
Hi,
After fitting new condensers last month and doing a 2K mile trip next week thought it'd be a good idea to try and preserve the life of them. Did a DIY mesh guard today with a couple of mesh sheets I bought off eBay for £15.47. Looks quite good and should stop any nasty stones puncturing the rads.
See photos below.

I think the ability to do a bit of DIY is essential on these - paying a garage to fix niggles would cost a fortune let alone the big stuff. (Just going through the list on my sons Citroen C2 Furio - all the front suspension off so a bit more than a niggle!)
My arch liners were held on with wood screws
!
Good luck with the project - I’m sure I read the air con pump was from a VW Audi group car or was that power steering pump
I'm removing the entire aircon system from mine this winter. I never use it cos it doesn't work and I really don't like the condensers taking all the air from the rads for cooling. Engine's coming out next week so I'll take the pump off then and get a shorter belt.
My old Boxster never had aircon and I don't remember ever wishing I had it apart from a drive back from Berlin in high 30's , too hot to have the roof down so it was up with windows down and actually it was was fine
I will get some of those mesh grills fitted though.
