Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Yes, I disconnect the CV joints so that the trans can be lowered some for removal/installation.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm replacing my 3.4 engine and have taken out all of the stuff underneath the engine. Seems a lot of room to be able to drop without the trans. Any of you guys dropped this engine only without the tranny? I know the conventional way is to remove with the trans, but would save a lot of time if the motor can be dropped by itself. Thanks.

POST 2Original post

Sure, you can drop just the engine. You'll need to disconnect the CV joints and as you lower the engine you can reach the upper transmission to engine bolts. Be careful not to bend the transmission input shaft. I have the rear wheels removed and after diconnecting everything actually lower the car and place the engine on my ATV jack. In a crunch on my 914 I've used a furniture dolly. Then raise the car without the engine. Just take your time and make sure everything's disconnected.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the input. Did you have a problem aligning the trans input shaft to the clutch upon reassembly? Im asssuming the CV joints have to be removed so the trans can be lower further? Thanks.

POST 4Original post

Yes, I disconnect the CV joints so that the trans can be lowered some for removal/installation. The trickiest part of the reassembly is the initial lineup. Use the engine case bolt and guide pins to line it up, then lift the engine up. Sounds easier than it is, but no too bad.
