So, not only will my CS have the engine light checked, some minor scratches and chips painted (service related incident), but I am now a proud owner of a new rear tire!!
Leading evidence: 'Check some minor scratches and chips painted (service related incident)' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'design defect' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check light' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Replaced both PRE-CAT converters, gaskets and manifolds today.

Suspected cause
We should see if there is a pattern by VIN# (batch of faulty cats) or if spread out more likely a design defect.

Suggestion
Watch for that rubber tether it's easy to catch it under the gas cap causing a break in the seal resulting in an engine check light.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My check engine light came on today. Took it to the dealer who put it on the computer. Tells me the catalytic converters are needing to be replaced. They are clogged. The car has 1250 miles on it. When I asked him why he said when they ship them on the boat they are constantly on & off going onto the ship which dumps raw fuel in the exhaust which fouls the converters. If that were the case you would think it would happen to every car not just mine. I think its another cause. Any suggestions
That can't be the cause or they'd all do it, something is obviously wrong with the design or implementation because this is the 10th or so car reported here that has done it (all covered under warranty). What are the last 4 digits of your VIN #? We should see if there is a pattern by VIN# (batch of faulty cats) or if spread out more likely a design defect. Does anyone know if this is happening on 987 S Boxsters as well or just the Cayman S?
I bought my cayman s on 5/23/06, and second day same thing happened.
They told me that they need to replace exhaust manifold(I think this includes cat).
I recently had a problem with my BMW X5 where two of the coils failed. I was misfiring and running very rough. They told me that while it was drivable, not to drive it as the misfire would cause petrol to flow through the exhaust which would kill the catalytic converter. So maybe your CC's were just faulty, or maybe somewhere along the line fuel killed them for some reason.
Make that eleven-- engine check light appeared after 1100 miles. I have an appointment with the Porsche service dept on Thursday.

Thanks for the advise- found the rubber tether was wrapped around the cap in such away that the cap failed to seal. I'll reset the engine check light and monitor. I suspect that was the problem.

I was reading this hoping that it wasnt going to happen to mine, and of course it did. They are replacing my convertor and my car was number 676 so I guess it happens to the early birds too.
Car #0984. I havehad 2 prior CELs - no noticeable drivability issues. The first one at about 250 miles was the gas cap. The second at about 2200 miles - maybe the gas cap. Dealer reset light and it stayed off. Now it came on today at about 4800 miles. But I feel a loss in performance. It doesn't seem to be running weaker, just not the same full-on acceleration rate. This seems to me to be something like a cat obsruction.
I'll be taking it to the shop on Monday.
Car # 592 here and it happened at 1100 miles and again at 1500 miles. Both times it went off the next day after refueling. Going to the dealer on Monday for install of short shifter and clear bra and he will look for the cause of check engine light coming on. Will keep you posted...........
gatorcayman if it only happens after re-fueling it most likely is caused by not tightening the gas cap until you year the 'click' or something is wrong with the filler cap.
No problems thus far- I reset the engine check light by disconnecting the battery. Watch for that rubber tether it's easy to catch it under the gas cap causing a break in the seal resulting in an engine check light.

I didn't get the car to the workshop until today.
After running some checks, I am waiting for some more information.
The present diagnosis is that the fuel tank diagnostic pump is giving off an error code. And they don't know whether it is the pump itself or something causing the pump to error.
It isn't anything that is affecting performance and I am supposed to pick the car up later today. They will have isolated the cause by then and ordered parts. Or not. Either way I will get the car back today.
I sure hope that everybody living in our fishbowl appreciates the effort that we are making to keep the air clean and fresh!!
Update 6/16/06.........Fault code P0421. Replaced both PRE-CAT converters, gaskets and manifolds today. There is a noticable difference (improvement)in the car's performance. Hopefully this fixes the problem. Mileage is at 2105.
Gas cap on tight...car stalled at a light in Rockville, MD. As soon as I started her back up, the Check Engine light and '!' flashed, then went solid. Still solid today (x's 4 days). I have an appointment tomorrow with the local PD. I will let you all know what is going on. BTW - I just hit 1100 miles.
Crazy stuff.

Update:
Talked to Service Mngr., seems the Lt. CC created a mis-read for the CS's CPU. What that means to me is that the part & carare fine. The lights have been reset and the car has been driven & tested to ensure that problem does not resurface.
In time, I will see if this holds true.
