Reported cause

There is also a very rare failure where the usual IMS noise gets much louder over a short time, this is due to the bolts undoing on the IMS cog.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

2000 model 996 turbo. Has anyone had experience of engine rattle at 1,500 rpm?. Above and below this rpm figure the rattle disappears.

POST 2Original post

If you have a stethoscope or a piece of wood/long screwdriver etc, listen to each chain, I have something similar which is likely to be a worn chain tensioner where the noise vanishes at 1800 rpm.

Many thanks for your reply.

POST 4Original post

This is a tricky one to answer over a forum. The intermediate shaft (IMS) in a 996t does make a distinctive noise which new owners often ask about, and it often sounds the loudest just above tickover, so it could be that you're describing. But it doesn't mean it's not something else. There are many other things it could be. There is also a very rare failure where the usual IMS noise gets much louder over a short time, this is due to the bolts undoing on the IMS cog. If caught early this is not expensive, if left until it fails, then it is very expensive. Google 996 turbo intermediate shaft noise there will be quite a few vids come up. If you could do a clip that would help. If it's very loud then I wouldn't drive it and get it trailered to a good Indy in case it's the rare IMS cog fault!

POST 5Original post

As mentioned by Mac a video will definitely help to get more accurate feedback. I’m hoping it’s something and nothing that can if needs be fixed easily

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Many thanks for your detailed response. I did however notice small aluminium shavings in the oil filter. Car runs and pulls very well. Tick over ok, just when you hit 1500 rpm. I will investigate your suggestions. Thanks

POST 7Original post

Having found that I wouldn't start it again until you have it properly looked at , it shouldn't have metal debris in the filter at all and something has clearly gone wrong.

I didn't think Turbos had an IMS. I thought they had the Mezger engine.

POST 9Original post

It is a Mezger, and it does have an IMS just a different design to the infamous one! You can see bolts that come un done behind the sprocket, it is very rare. Again a pic of the metal in filter would help, a couple of flakes could be considered normal, any more and follow advice and get it checked out.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I hope to check the oil filter in the next couple of days and will take a photo if metal fragments are evident. Thanks for your response.
