Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So had my 996.2 tip Tronic gearbox service and they found these rings which were broken up. The garage says the gearbox runs fine. The car is running fine. It’s come from somewhere from gearbox but it doesn’t seem to be effective performance obviously they haven’t opened up the gearbox or anything. I’ve had the car for a couple of months and has been running fine - but
very concerning but trying to strike the balance between is this something that can be fixed or do I see how it continues to run? It would be good to get some thoughts from anyone that has had similar experience.
Obviously cost is planning on my mind.
thanks - this is my thinking as well- I love the car but dont want to go down a money rabbit hole. Of course I understand need to pay to maintain things and thats fine
As mentioned if it ain’t broke then leave it well alone. As time goes by hopefully you’ll tune out to the problem and fingers crossed it doesn’t give you any issues
Hard to tell from the pics (no banana for scale) but they could be pieces of the sump magnet (basically a ferrite ring magnet) that has delaminated / broken up, at which point it will lose its magnetic properties too (hence why it's not all bunched together). I'd be inclined to ensure that the sump magnet is properly in place before reassembling so as to at least rule out this possibility.
Your image IMG_1353 shows the sump magnet so that's ruled out that, I'd say. Definitely worth a thorough flush (or two) before refilling with fluid and sealing up again.
